She's fabulous! "She's in the "Could sing the phone book" club. it's all about talent, but intelligent interpretation and being about the song and style, not about yourself and being an "opera diva." You could recognize her voice in seconds of the start to a song on just hearing her.
F. Y. I. Here’s the correct melody. Nowhere near what Ms. Knight sang. My thoughts are that she doesn’t have the necessary training or ears to know the difference. But that’s me. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sqtoJ8Tekfw.html
Gladys is one of the best singers of our time. Her voice is stellar, I love her singing jazz as much as I love her singing the songs she has stamped "A Gladys Standard"
Gladys Knight will be recognized (she is already recognized by some) as a songstress on par with the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Rosemary Clooney. She takes a song and delivers it like she's having a conversation with her audience. She's never "pitchy" or unsure of where she's going vocally.
Cherie Sullivan - I am a little late responding to this. I am 57. Many know of Gladys Knight and the Pips and remember her variety show from the ‘70s. But I still think she is under appreciated for the singer she is in her own right. My comment was in no way meant in disrespect - quite the opposite actually.
I would never mention Ella Fitzgerald and Rosemary Clooney in the same sentence. Totally different categories. Totally different leagues. But that’s me.
As to why Gladys doesn't go full-time into jazz - in her old age - I'll never know - don't addicts me to your voice and tell me you are retiring - you belong to the stage and big band nights - and for that - I'll dress up to the nines❤
Do nothing till you hear from me, Pay no attention to what's said. Why people tear the seams of anyone's dreams Is over my head. Do nothing till you hear from me, At least consider our romance. If you should take the words of others you've heard, I haven't a chance. True, I've been seen with someone new, But does that mean that I've been untrue? When we're apart, The words in my heart Reveal how I feel about you. Some kiss may cloud my memories, And other arms may hold a thrill, But please, do nothing till you hear it from me-- And you never will. ~interlude~ Some kiss may cloud my memories, And other arms may hold a thrill, But please, do nothing till you hear it from me-- And you never will.
The melody line of this song has always been evasive. I adore her, saw her in concert, WOW. But I don't like the orchestration on this version; it's too pure to be jazzed around for me.
ARRGG she is singing the melody wrong and it's driving me nuts. (Listen to Ella's version to hear how it was originally written by Duke Ellington, specifically the A section of this AABA song.) I mean the song is so great that even when it is screwed up it still sounds good, but refusing to sing it the (superior) way it was originally written is a kind of historical erasure.
Thomas Horwath It's jazz. Her interpretation of a classic tune written by Duke Ellington. Often vocalist or musicians will personalize a song to fit themselves. I don't think she strayed too far from the original format.
