Back into Bolsover today and we're looking at one of the smallest parishes in the district. For such a small area you get a lot of bang for your buck here! This is without question a glorious little village atop a hill, the same hill in fact that we saw in the Scarcliffe episode.
Here you will find a nurseries built on the site of an old hall which also gives its name to the football ground of the local village team. Sticking with sports there's also a cricket club here formed thanks to one of the local collieries (incidentally said colliery wasn't even in this parish it was actually over the border in Ault Hucknall - even so that didn't stop some 500 houses being developed in this village to accommodate the workforce)
There's two pubs, one named after a 19th Century champion racehorse and the other which has changed it's name a few times these days known as the Plug and Feathers at the bottom of The Hill. Also at the bottom of the hill you find the entrance to the Stockley Trail which is a 2 mile long old railway line which used to carry passengers between Chesterfield and Mansfield.
We are 155 miles away from London in this place and if you want confirmation of that fact all you have to do is look at the village green whale found a mile marker telling you exactly how many miles it is to our nations capital. Other than that there's a surgery a couple of play areas, and a street that apparently overlooks a church even though they're actually isn't one! There's also no shops, no post office but also no stress here.
This is just a village that is minding its own business along the A617 between Chesterfield and Mansfield. Welcome to GLAPWELL.

GLAPWELL ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: - The Plug and Feathers has recently closed and looks set to become a Costa. The pub has struggled for a fair few years though despite the houses around it and the very busy road it lies on. - The land in Park Avenue’s controversial sale is the only Asset of Community Value in the whole of Bolsover District. This is where the Glapwell Carnival Parade would pass through the village - Residents are angry because the developer could have taken a different route - The meeting referenced was a Bolsover District Council meeting not Glapwell Parish Council - Mrs Ward’s shop was located halfway down the hill. This was gone by the mid 1970s - Also, despite one resident telling me otherwise, Glapwell DOES have a shop, which also contains the post office. If you carry on walking around The Green past the surgery you see it there. It used to be a Co-Op in the 70s - Down Rowthorne Lane on the left is an old post box as the street is where the old post office was. Next door used to be a shop/hairdressers

The Plug and Feathers has recently closed and looks set to become a Costa by the sounds of it. Not sure if that's good or bad to be honest, I reckon the latter. The pub has struggled for a fair few years though despite the houses around it and the very busy road it lies on.

Church view does refer to Ault Hucknall church, which can be seen from some parts of Glapwell (mainly from upstairs windows). Also, there is a shop which also contains the post office. If you'd carried on walking around The Green past the GP surgery you would have seen it. Great video though.

Cheers Michael. I thought it would've been that church, nothing else made sense!

My dad worked at Glappy pit for many years from the 1930s until the 70s. I've been through Glapwell many many times and it's hard to believe there are no shops there ... really! No post office, no offy, no nothing. Where do people go when they're out of milk or essentials unexpectedly.

Apparently there is a shop. The local man who told me there wasn't one was clearly more of a village idiot than me. It's round by the doctors

There was a small parish church on the hill next to the pub (now called ?) but it was knocked down.

Paul Eggleston ... just what the Country needs, another Costa ... not! I do understand why they'd choose that area with it being close to a motorway junction.
