I just realized - Helen infiltrated a billionaire's private rich-person retreat, and stopped the release of his scheme to endanger people all over the world, by blowing his entire mansion up. That's straight up a James Bond plot. Helen is the James Bond of this movie.
I love that everyone stayed true to their character because they truly were never gonna tell the truth until miles had nothing else to pull through for them.
Until at the end they show that they are willing to do what’s right, even thought they wouldn’t get anything out of it. They were still ruined. Also, only Lionel, Birdie, and Claire said anything because they were the only ones who had their teeth on Miles tit. Whiskey and Peg didn’t do anything wrong and wouldn’t have had any adverse reactions from telling the truth so it makes a bigger impact coming from the “shít heads”.
that last shot of Helen looking at the camera before the film credits is just her posing like the Mona Lisa. You don’t know if she’s sad (because of her twin’s passing) or happy (because she just got her revenge) Also the Red and Blue painting (Piet Mondrian painting) that hides the red envelope was hung by Miles is upside down which further shows he’s an actual idiot 😂
Lionel wonders why Miles kept the napkin and says, "Why didn't you just burn it?" That gives Miles the idea to burn the napkin and he points to Lionel when he does it!
one thing that no one ever catches is that helen writes miles' name down on the "clue" suspect list, but she put it as a header and not one of the spaces with a spot to mark for motive and opportunity, which is a small detail i love. another missed catch is blanc yelling "helen!" when the lights are out and they're looking for andi after duke's death (before the cut). no one ever catches it with all the chaos and confusion. also both movies have 3 things that i hope continue in each new movie: noah segan (who played derol in this one and trooper wagner in knives out...he's in every rian johnson movie), a mention of the game/movie clue, and a line about a group of people holding on for dear life to someone rich's theoretical boobs (in knives out, ransom said joni had her “teeth in the family’s tit for years”)
Both movies are excellent because they’re character-based and the whodunnit is less important than the process of how it was done. Janelle Monae clear MVP here… she’s too talented for just one person, it’s unfair 😂 😂
I thought Whiskey had something to do with it at first (maybe bc I just also love Madelyn Cline lol). I fell for the whole Glass Onion concept, thinking it was a more complex mystery but it was put together by an idiot. However, it was such a fun movie that I really enjoyed. Definitely different to Knives Out I don't even want to compare them too much because I like them both. And of course, Benoit is just the best character and loved his dynamic with Helen. Can't wait for the third movie!
I’m glad both movies went with a different tone/atmosphere! First one was very New England, stately mansion setting with a lot of family tension, Glass Onion went with the exotic seaside setting with a “friend” group dynamic. I wonder what the third movie will go with 🤔

I feel like Knives Out feels more like a comfort movie bc it’s around the Holidays w family & for that reason it will always live up. & Glass onion is more comedic & exciting bc of the change of scenery, new cast & how the story flips itself around to reveal it was all in plain sight. Ana & Janelle were exceptional accomplices & love that they’re both minorities. Benoit Blanc is without a doubt the best detective in both. So it’s hard to compare. I feel like they’re more so just movies in a series rather than trying to outdo eachother. But the stereotypical tropes of the characters remain
Another banger of a movie. Daniel Craig is absolutely amazing in this movie. The whole cast is great especially Janelle Monet. She just shined. Great reaction and commentary guys.
Fun reaction you guys; you caught on so much quicker than I did! 😄 Respectfully though, I disagree with you about Peg being a pointless character. Besides playing the serious counterpart to the oblivious Birdie (which makes Kate Hudson’s comedic moments even better when they interact), Peg also had a sincere reason to wish Miles harm. Besides him being rude and dismissive to her (she’s been Birdie’s assistant for years and he doesn’t even remember her name or bother to ask her what she would like to drink), if Birdie signed off on the statement about the Bangladesh sweatshop, then Peg’s reputation would be ruined too and she most likely wouldn’t be able to find a job as an assistant again. And Miles shows that he couldn’t care less. So even though she’s not as much as a standout character as the rest of that colorful bunch of “shitheads”, she isn’t superfluous to the movie. I think the great thing about both movies is that they subvert expectations. The first one is obviously not a classic whodunnit and kept you guessing. Then with this one, everyone was expecting wild twists and turns like the first one. And Rian Johnson subverted those expectations by keeping it simple and expected. He still subverted your expectations, just in a different way and I really like that.
All of this! I love that he knows internet culture so well that he knows how to make these stories fun. He knows people are gonna pick it apart and try to figure it out right away, and instead of fighting that, he plays around with it. Meaning, he doesn't subvert just to subvert - he's doing it because people are so good at guessing tropes now that he knows to twist the story to make it entertaining for us.
The real Mona Lisa is painted on wood and very small. And like Leblanc said it property of the French government they would never give the real one to him. That painting miles had was larger and painted on canvas so that means Miles didn’t even have the real painting which shows that his love for art is superficial. A real art enthusiasts would immediately recognize that it’s not the real Mona Lisa . The director confirmed this
I saw an analysis of this film where they theorize that Miles actually believed that was the real Andi on the island and backs it up too. This is such a good film to rewatch and notice all these tiny moments that feed into the bigger picture that you don’t see the first time around. Great reaction from you guys and hope you guys see more and more of the layers of this glass onion 👌
I mean, he did just give her sleeping pills and put her in the car. He's not exactly brilliant and he was in a time crunch to leave. I don't changes much but I think thats a completely valid interpretation.
Helen taking a hammer 🔨 to that box in the beginning was the most relatable thing! 🤣 I could not be bothered 😒. This was a fun watch, not better than the first in my opinion but still good!
i love watching it back and looking for all the things you missed. the glass switching, the recorder being tossed in birdies bag, benoit calling “andy” helen and the accent switch right before she was shot, etc.
Happy New Year! I’m back here after a while. I just finished watching a ‘Glass Onion’ Reaction a while back. I’ll summarise my thoughts: - Daniel in Colourful Outfits with Ascots > Daniel Craig shirtless - Duke’s Mom is a Legend. - Toni Collette and Kate Hudson got the assignment for playing ‘Girlbosses on their own trip’. - Janelle Monáe was JUST SO BRILLIANT. Also, the outfits are awesome! - The number of cameos left me SHOOKETH. - Rian Johnson is determined to subvert every actor who played a Superhero and I support that decision. - We won’t look at hot sauces the same way again.
Love rian Johnson as a director he hasn’t failed me yet his writing is just so clever and I love the the way he focuses on characters in these films also Janelle monae absolutely steals this film I’m glad she’s getting some awards recognition don’t think she would get in for best supporting actress but I would love it if she did
I honestly think this movie should get an award. It's so different compared to normal murder mysteries. Its like poetry rather than a mystery. The twists weren't complex but the way everything was hinted at and explained, the way it portrayed the conflict between truth and motives, and how justice plays into that. Just- wow. The big picture was there for us to see all along yet it was covered by - not even misdirects, but- pieces of the big picture, except the pieces of the picture were so scrambled, we just brushed it off because it felt too simple. The real beauty of it was that it was, extremely simple, and that made it hard to understand. A glass onion.
Knives Out (in my opinion) is the far superior movie and I say that as someone who really enjoyed Glass Onion. However Glass Onion can't hold a candle to the greatness that was knives out
It took me a while to appreciate this movie because it's so different from the first movie, which I loved. I would have been more than happy with another cleverly written mystery among a different family. Instead, we got larger than life themes, more spectacle and less character development. Oh, well. It's still fun on its own terms. I hope Blanc's boyfriend (Hugh Grant) has a bigger role in the third installment.
He is playing in the bathtub with Kareem Abdul-Jabaar, Natasha Lyonne (not Bedingfield), and in their last film appearances the great Angela Lansbury & Stephen Sondheim.
Great reaction, I love this movie. I actually like when they make movies current though, like including the pandemic cause when we look back at these movies down the line we'll remember what it was like.
So lets get into the DELICIOUS defeat of Miles point by point -Mona Lisa is valued at 874 million dollars according to the Louvre and Art Society. Miles VOIDED the insurance agreement by having an override button installed for some dumb reason MEANING Miles has NO COVERAGE in the destruction and paying for the Mona Lisa himself, along with any other fees and penalties i imagine the French Government would tackle on so probably close to a billion in damages. -KLEAR destroyed the Mona Lisa meaning Miles is about to lose more money with his company since all the investors will probably sue him to return all their money. - Finally Miles is probably facing 2 life sentences for 1st degree and 2nd degree murder for Andi and Duke.
Just an interesting tidbit: some fans are saying that in this movie, the Mona Lisa could be a fake, because the original was painted on wood and this one looked like canvas when it went up in flames. If that's the case, it suggests that Miles is either lying about it being the real Mona Lisa, or he's such an idiot that he doesn't know it's a fake... there's also a Rothko painting in the background that's hung upside-down so that further implies that Miles has no understanding of art
@@ghostbunk I've seen this theory around, but it just doesn't make sense, burning the Mona Lisa is the only real reason for Miles downfall, destroying something so valuable and irreplaceable regardless of the money he has is the reason his reputation will be forever ruined, which, in turn, is the reason why the other disruptors finally betrayed him, as he won't be able to bankroll their lives. And we've seen they are capable of even ignoring murder.
@@luiscalzoncit2820 You're totally right that Miles can't know that the painting's fake, because that's the tipping point for him realizing that his reputation is ruined. As for the rest of the disruptors, the belief that the painting is the real thing is what makes them willing to betray Miles. I think it would be funny if somehow Miles had asked the French government if he could take the Mona Lisa and they gave him a fake or a copy without him realizing it haha I guess my thoughts are that it doesn't really matter if the painting is real or not in this film, as long as the characters believe that it is real.
@@ghostbunk Yeah, I guess this theory was based on people not wanting the Mona Lisa destroyed. But in the context of the movie, the destruction of the real thing is what makes Helen's revenge make sense both in the practical sense and the thematic sense, as Helen is the real disruptor there, plus, unless the French government has personal beef with Miles, why would they hide the fact that the real Mona Lisa is actually safe, and if they do, they'll have to keep the real one hidden for actually Miles to get any consequences for his actions. I don't know, maybe it was a fake and that would make a funny joke for the movie, but Im glad it was never clarified because it would go against the logic of the whole Helen arc.
FYI- the other people playing Among Us were Natasha Lyonne, Angela Lansbury, and Steven Sondheim. And the one who understood the music clue at the party was Yo-Yo Ma.
Everyone in the Among Us scene is connected to mysteries. Kareem for example wrote a comic about Sherlock's brother and Angela was an actor in a famous mystery series.
When Rob said that he had seen Daniel Craig in silly vacation outfits I felt personally offended because his wardrobe in this is 🔥😂 I thought this one was good but personally I like the first one more, just because I love dysfunctional families and the setting 😂 It definitely feels very different to Knives Out, which was very intimate. Glass Onion feels bigger with a more artificial look and very much like sequel. But again it’s a great societal commentary and I love how Rian always puts these underestimated female characters with a minority background at the centre who are taken advantage of by privileged, entitled pricks. Btw the other people that were playing Among Us with Blanc were Angela Lansbury (Murder, She Wrote), Natasha Lyonne (OITNB, Russian Doll) and Stephen Sondheim, so pretty iconic people 😂 Also.. justice for Peg/Jessica Henwick 😂😂
A Knives Out Mystery (spoiler free) The 2019 original Knives Out and the 2022 sequel Glass Onion are rewatchable films. Unlike other movies in the “whodunit” (murder) genre, the reveals enhanced rewatch experience as subtle clues became obvious. The director (Rian Johnson) is a master of expectation subversion and misdirection, as he made a distinctly different sequel in the same universe. Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is the only returning character anchoring both movies. The first movie was set in a stuffy New England house of a patriarch and his dysfunctional family (old money-ish). The sequel was set on a private Greek island of a tech billionaire surrounded by his inner circle of “disrupters” (new money-ish). The first movie is better (in my opinion), but the second is a worthy sequel - more transparent (glass), more layered (onion), and more fun in the sun.
I hope they keep making more KO movies with different casts and exploring different genres. It reminds me of Agatha Christie’s Poirot - sometimes he was in England, in Egypt, on trains, on yachts, with a unique cast each time
You meant Natasha Lyonne, the actress and not Natasha Bedingfield, the singer (one of the 4 playing Among Us with Benoit). I don't even want to go into how old you must be when you don't know who Jared Leto is, and how old that makes me feel! Lol.
Finally got to see this film recently and remembered to come back and watch your reaction! 🙂 I still love the first one better, but this one was fun and had lots of funny parts that cracked me up -- Birdy screaming "WHAT IS REALITY???" and also thinking sweat shops are where you make sweat pants, Serena Williams muttering "It's your money" when no one wants a session with her (her suddenly moving on the screen startled me, that was so funny and unexpected), Jeremy Renner's hot sauce coming in clutch (lol), Stephen Sondheim / Kareem / Angela Lansbury / Natasha and Yo-Yo Ma cameos, Blanc saying he hates the Clue game, and Hugh Grant and Ethan Hawke's rando cameos. All so fun. And Janelle Monáe was terrific in both roles. At the start of the film, I assumed it was going to be about Ed Norton's character hosting a fake murder mystery and then him getting murdered in actuality because everyone at the party had a reason to want him dead. At certain points I suspected it would be Whiskey, who seemed smarter than she initially let on, and Birdy's assistant, because she was being ignored by everyone (so we weren't really paying attention to her behaviors) and she had a big stake in not letting her own career be destroyed. And when Andie got shot, and then we find out it's her sister, I was like, 'And they killed her too??? BOTH of them died? THAT SUCKS!' I was so glad it turned out to be a fake-out. When I first saw the film, I didn't notice the red envelope in the glass onion, and I didn't notice the drink glass switching because I was focused on exactly what they wanted me to focus on (Birdy twirling her multi-colored dress, lol). But one thing I DID notice was that Blanc never gave back the "Klear" hydrogen crystals (or whatever it was) and I wondered if that would come back in an important moment because they abruptly switched to a new scene without showing him return it to Miles. So when he said there was nothing he could do, in that pivotal scene, I thought, "Where's the thing? Can he use that somehow? And how?" I was so afraid Miles was going to get away with everything. Ed had such a smarmy smug smile on his face, very punchable, lol. So I loved the glass smashing by everyone, and the explosion, and Blanc sitting there smoking while the alarm is screaming "This is a smokeless garden!" One thing I didn't realize, and my brother-in-law pointed out to me afterward, is that Derol -- the odd guest on the island who keeps showing up randomly -- is supposed to symbolize Covid. When he first shows up on the beach, he's carrying a case of CORONA beer. So it's kind of to say that even though -- during a pandemic -- they're all on this remote island, supposedly safe from the virus, it's all around them anyway. Like all the idiots back then in real life who had parties during lockdown when they weren't supposed to and ended up getting Covid. LOL! I thought that was a super clever and really funny detail. Brilliant.
I was the only one in the family who still believed that it was Miles. They all said that would be too obvious but that was the point. People don’t always believe it is the obvious one cause it’s too easy so they trick many into not thinking it’s Miles. Fir me there were countless clues
54:29 An expensive car that stands out in a crowd - ie what you should not be driving when you're going some place to murder someone because it's too recognisable and it's too risky for someone to notice it and remember seeing it on the day in question. But Miles never thought of that because.....say it with me now.....he's an idiot.
whats so funny is i saw miles hand duke the glass but i just thought it was a mistake on his part until he said he picked up his glass then i was like oh thats not what happened, he killed him 😂
While I do like the new one, I still like the original better. I believe the ending to this one kind of let me down. It’s very chaotic and seemingly very random. But then somebody explained it ties into the idea of disruption and breaking the system when regular and legal tactics don’t work. That basically bumped the movie from a 7 to an 8 for me. The original is like a 9 for me for comparison.
@@kordei-7839 I agree. It was like letting out steam and very rage-induced, but it felt less like solving a mystery as the first one was. This felt more like the end of a psychological thriller where the main character does something to bring about the ending as opposed to figuring something out to bring on the ending. It’s not bad, but it leaves me unsatisfied for the movie being a mystery.
While Knives Out was also my fave of the two, I wanted to share a few extra lil details about Glass Onion that I enjoyed: the lil snippet of Among Us at the start of the movie works (not just in bringing up a mystery game that was popular during the year the movie takes place) in that it shows Blanc playing the role of the “impostor.” Similarly, he and Helen were the “impostors” among the rest of the cast on the island. Also, I read a comment on another video where someone explained that the Beatles’ song of the same title was also made in response to fans trying to find hidden meanings in their songs, which works with the anti-mystery theme of trying not to overthink what’s really going on.
At 58:10, I forget who said it, But I think the thing I love most about these films so far, is that they're all different. Similar to reading Agatha Christie, or the Hardy Boys. Each is it's own, separate mystery, and they don't need, to be connected.
Peg had to be there because Birdie would have not been Birdie without her. Cancel culture would have sank her ship along before she gained any real popularity. Peg makes Birdie possible.
One major difference between this one and Knives Out is you had the potential to figure out the latter if you followed the clues. In this one, you could only guess, because key elements of the story aren't known until the middle of the movie which are crucial for getting all the information. We'd all know it was Miles the second he saw "Andi" the first time. The movie would be obvious.
The thing I love about this movie is that it's not a complicated, dramatic mystery with action and suspense---it's so incredibly ridiculous, and it's just about terrible rich people trying to save their own asses I love it so much
Dude I just realized this movie is like an actual glass onion. You have to look at it from different angles to see all the layers. If you look straight on, it will just be clear and you can see the center, but if you tilt it or your head (and therefore your perspective), you will see the layers that lead to the center. This movie and every other murder mystery forces your perspective to be tilted so you have to go through the layers with the detective to eventually reach the center, when in reality if you could see the whole onion (big picture) you would see straight through to the center (mystery solved). What a BEAUTIFUL metaphor.
I really liked this movie and how Rian Johnson crafted the story but what I found even more impressive was the fact they managed to make us pay less attention to how gorgeous Jessica Henwick is irl by making her a low-profile and less important background character.
My thoughts throughout the movie: "This is a long build up" "Is that fucking Stephen Sondheim?!?!" "Is that Ethan Hawke?" "Is that all we got from Ethan Hawke?" "Oh this is starting to get pretty good." "Are we just going to ignore the fact that he handed Duke the glass? He never put it on the table." "Is that all we get of Batista? What a shame." "Why'd he call her Helen?" "Oh that's why he called her Helen.." "Ouu more Batista." "Okay we aren't ignoring the handing of the glass." "Hindenburg." "Why was Stephen Sondheim in this?" "That was a good ending." "Why is Joseph Gordon-Levitt Credited as the Hourly Dong?"
Something interesting that comes to notice is that's not the real Mona Lisa at all!! The real one's painted on wood, it wouldn't burn up like that. The Louvre basically didn't trust Miles with it and made him pay a fortune in packaging for nothing (there is apparently a post-credits scene with Benoit Blanc talking to the French Authorities to make sure the Mona Lisa is in fact safe in France, but the director chose to not include it)
I see this comment a lot in reactions but I don't think this is true, because if it is, it basically destroys Helen's revenge, the point of burning the Mona Lisa is that now Miles is responsible for the destruction of something so famous and iconic, he could never repair his reputation even with all the money in the world.
apparently the creators said they had a deleted scene where it turns out the painting wasn't the real one but they deleted it since they felt it would be more impactful if the real one was destroyed
