That’s one of my favorite parts of the movie so this is so cool to know! Me? I’d have beat the fuck out of him and anyone else who tried to stop me would’ve caught a few stray punches because in that moment these hands are E for everyone. I’d have been FURIOUS, not sad. Literally nothing could’ve kept me from flying across the table like she did so to know they were gonna have her just cry … that would’ve made me so irritated.
It does seem to be more in character for Aren to get angry at Tyler rather than just sitting there and crying. She seems to have a ‘take no shit’ attitude.

At first, I didn't understand it either until I watched it again and saw what was the meaning. That would had been like if chef who came from a rich background and was making really good money but still chose to steal. What she did made no sense to me. All it just showed that she was greedy for greedy sakes. I think the only ones who didn't deserved their fates was the actor and the wife of the dude who cheated on her. Erin doesn't count because she wasn't supposed to be there anyway.
One of my favorite things I saw in a RU-vid comment was that Margot’s experience as a sex worker (someone who professionally reads people and serves what they want; not just what they say but what they WANT) is how she survived this movie, and I LOVE that take. If it were me, I’d have just seen the picture and been like, “Huh, how far he’s come from flipping burgers,” but Margot noticed the smile. She made the emotional connection. Now I appreciate her even more.
She kinda went dom there, taking control away from Slowik and moving his focus to her command. I get the vibe Julien knew what she was up to when she ordered the burger, but appreciated what she was doing and decided to play along.
As someone who has watched a lot of violent, disturbing horror movies, the Tyler's Bullshit scene was absolutely brilliant to me. I was totally expecting them to boil him like a lobster in an oversized pot, or toss him in the oven or hang him up and skin him alive. But the fact that they played the mental game and simply humiliated him was SO much worse.
You are right. Tyler would have been able to justify those things as him being part of the artistic experience. Showing him how useless and pointless he truly is hurt him far more than any blade or flame ever could. Plus Slowik’s commentary was just hilarious 🤣

But for these chefs this is also their entire lives. They spend all day, every day, raising and preparing food, then go to a shack on the island to sleep in a single room on top of each other, only to do it all again the next day and the next. With the way the toilets are, they even take a crap almost on top of each other in plain view. No friends, no family, just chef and them, with no free time. It's super cult-y.
There's a theory that he didn't let her go, because of how in the beginning they emphasized the aged beef that would kill you if you didn't wait for it to be properly aged. Some think the burger may have come from that...
One of my favourite random facts about this movie is that Anya was the one who made the choice to have her seated with her back to the kitchen staff/chef, but that ended up resulting in neck pain since she basically spent months of filming with her head twisted towards the kitchen lol.
Ralph Fiennes, the actor for Chef, is the one who played the horrible and terrifying nazi officer Amon Göth in Schindler's list, and also the one who played Voldemort in the Harry Potter series. He's not as easily recognizable as Voldemort but his character Amon Göth scarred me so much that as soon as I saw Chef I was TERRIFIED. THAT's an actor for you. I'm sure the guy is really nice in real life, but I see him in a movie and grab my desk in fear.
The way Margot got out was perfect: taking him back to his roots, when he served simple people simple food and they enjoyed... Asking how much, if she can take the rest to go... You know, the everyday talk with common folk, not some pretentious review full of lofty phrases made by uncultured rich people. I actually teared up seeing him smile.
This movie was made for the service workers and the murderous feelings it brings to be one. I hope y’all are doing as well as you can we’re all in it together
An amuse bouche is basically a one bite taste (2 bites at most) to get your taste buds going and prepare for the meal ahead. :) It's a French phrase that means "mouth amuser". In a restaurant it's always free and chosen by the Chef. This one was actually rather large with all those compressed melon balls - closer to an appetizer.

I was honestly sad for Anne, when your husband is cheating on you and has incestuous kinks (i think she already knew about those things, she just didn’t have a 100% confirmation till the dinner), you probably got too many worries to be paying attention to what you eat at a restaurant 💀
In another part of the original script, it mentions a) Chef was found running a taco truck outside a Food Expo, and it was "the happiest he'd ever been", and Lillian ruined that with the interview that made Hawthorne into a reality. b) Margot calling him out on the fact that he parked his taco truck outside the Food Expo KNOWING Food critics were going to be there.
The thing I love about this movie is that the chef is doing this because of people who have stolen away his joy for cooking, yet everyone I've seen watching this film, including myself, has had negative things to say about the food that was being served in the film. I think that was deliberate. The film made us into those ppl in the film: the food critics, the non-cookers, the food naysayers, but in the end that was exactly what saved Margot/Erin, her ability to challenge his cooking & remind him of the joy of cooking. The film was brilliant to me. A new favorite

It's kinda like a car crash; it's horrifying, but you just can't look away. It's a fascinating movie; scary, unexpectedly deep and satisfying and I'm glad I got to see you guys react to it.
And it’s also very funny in that dark sort of “I’m laughing to cope with the fucked up shit I’m seeing” kind of way. I love me a good black comedy with smart satire, and this film really scratched that itch.
I love this movie. I've seen it three times in the last two weeks. As Chef says part way through the evening, those people represented the ruin of his life and profession. The critic, with her sycophantic partner who followed her around like a puppy, ruined lives with her opinions; the customers who ate mindlessly and couldn't even tell him what they'd eaten; the money guys who've reduced his food down to numbers; the elitist actor who ruined Chef's only free time, and who was ruining the art of his own profession by churning out bullshit, and his elitist assistant who went to an ivy league school on someone else's dime; and Tyler, the dilettante, who picked apart the art of cooking, taking the mystery out of it, knowing everything about it in theory but had no actual experience; and lastly Chef himself, who participated in all of it by ending up cooking food for people who could afford to eat his food but couldn't appreciate it. Did either of you see About a Boy (2002)? It was Nicholas Hoult's first movie when he was 11 and it's so good.
I begged my family for weeks to get them to watch this with me. I'd already seen it and wanted to see their reactions to it. I finally got them to watch it (reluctantly) yesterday, and they didn't really pay attention to it until The Mess. The looks on their faces were PRICELESS, and they stayed engrossed in the movie after that. Whoever wrote and directed this movie knew EXACTLY what they were doing, and I will forever appreciate them for it. Thank you!
Watching this movie without even looking at a trailer was a great choice, i loved the surprise. This movie have such style. Any movie Anya Taylor-Joy is in will be good i am convinced of that, she makes perfect choice in movies and always kills it.
I love how Chef after seeing Margot happy, for a moment seemed to be regretful that he was going to continue with everything, but there was no way he could just give up without finishing what he started.
I came here to say that, the Chef is Ralph Fiennes who was Voldemort. Nicholas Hoult was also one of the X-men, he was Hank McCoy in X-Men First Class.
Fun fact if anyone cares, this movie was filmed on Jekyll Island in savannah Georgia, where I’m from. I recognized the island immediately so it was nice to see.
As a chef the message at the very least is don’t be a Tyler. No one is sad at him doing what he did in the freezer. All the other people types we can deal with, it’s an evil to deal with but the Tylers of the world who dissect the trade and craft and use it to talk down is the most infuriating thing ever.
I can understand your attitude to Tylers. Similar to people who have never worked in production dissecting all the ways a movie was done wrong. Do it yourself or shut up! I love watching some cooking shows. But instead of jealous, I am fascinated with the chemistry of the techniques and awed by the skillful craft of those who prepare those dishes. They have talents I couldn't hope to have.

They consider less "aware" people to be lessER people. And they don't care about people as much as they should/could, both the people behind the professional work and other patrons. as an aspiring chef I thought this movie was amazing. an extreme version of what every chef thinks to some extent at least. people take the fun out of the experience of what chef's attempt to create, as well as the chefs themselves. obvs some chefs can't or don't try to make the meal an experience, but a lot do and I am assuming this extreme version isn't as far off the mark as people think
To someone who wants to be a chef it's probably kind of a life lesson too. One part that reactors don't comment on but was most interesting for me when I saw this in theaters, was when she was in the his house looking at all the photos of him in all of his various prestegious restaurants and all of his accomplishments, but the photo of him when he was young and working as a short order cook at a burger joint is the only one where he genuinely looks happy.

Ambition and wanting to strive isn't always a bad thing, and I'm not arguing for any fetishization of "the simple life," but if you get so caught up in it that you lose all the joy in what you're doing along the way...what's the point? And in the context of the film, there were a lot of themes of the chef making the meal an experience for the diners, which everyone knows chefs do. However, it was actually "Margot" taking the chef back to that previous experience of cooking cheeseburgers that saved her life.

Chef gained a love for cooking when he worked at a burger joint. Her ordering a burger brought back a little bit of the passion and joy he had while cooking. In a way he respected her for that, plus she wasn't part of his plan for a grand suicide so he let her leave.
Anyone whose worked in a restaurant knows and or has experienced every single one of these kind of customers the rich elite bros who act like they’re so great and so elite that nothing impresses them and they think they own the staff and should get their own way the older couple in the middle of their marriage who just eat no matter what it i or the cost just as a means of tradition and or routine but who savor and experience nothing That one customer whose always critiquing the dish and presentation The foodie who thinks they know what they’re talking about but have never worked in that environment ever in their life the guys who think that cooking or working i na place like that is easy and thus expect more than what they get etc. etc. The film also even addresses the issue with Art, when some artists are so full of themselves that they believe they are able to pass judgment on others and or decide what is art and what isn’t Slowick represents that kind of artist, the guy whose become so successful that he expects everything needs to be some intellectual exercise but cannot appreciate the difference in art or the things he personally views as lesser.
Slowik has all the makings of a great cult leader. He's charismatic, wise, eloquent, and in a position of mentorship. He has the perfect place to literally isolate people from their friends and family, and he has power over those same people to make or break their careers and provide or withhold validation. While the specific events of the film are unlikely, it is similar to how real cults function, and even end in mass death. I'm not sure if Tyler was always a psycho, or became one over the course of being indoctrinated by Slowik. Anyway, great movie
I've watched this movie a few times and it just occurred to me that Margot is having a full "Clerks" moment. She's not even supposed to be here today. Brilliant movie. The most unique thing I've watched in years.
Cute little behind the scenes detail: Typically in movies when you see them eating, they spit it out once the cameras stop rolling, or they only take small bites. Nathan Foad actually IS eating everything, to keep in character!
I watched this with my friends yesterday and we were so set on there being some sort of cannibalism to the story and when there wasn't we were all pleasantly surprised and loved the movie even more because of that. I am glad you guys reacted to it, and understood lots of the parts that I missed on my first watch!
The ironic part is that after I saw this movie the first time, I wanted a cheeseburger so badly. So I had one of my co-workers make a cheeseburger and I ate it while watching youtubers react to the movie. It was amazing!
I read more into the movie and it makes more sense as to why Chef Slowik had so much BEEF with the people there except for Margot. First is the WHY he wanted to do this? Well, Chef Slowik is punishing the restaurant guests because of socioeconomic issues when it comes to the NOW joyless AND competitiveness of food within the dining industry. Some high-end restaurants are often challenged by such which is why the chef is a clear example of how his JOY has faded away as time went with his career because of wealthy guests like who were invited that make dining MORE COSTLY with LEAVING LITTLE TO NO PLEASURE for the workers who blood, sweat, and tear for the food. Think about service workers. Also, it was crazy how in one point of the movie they were eating ROCKS….. IDC how rich you are there is no reason why the EGO and PRIDE of someone eating rocks at fine restaurant thinks that it proves of their status and how exquisite a restaurant is. Like really where is the actual FOOD? That’s why Chef Slowik feels so uneven with his guests who feel like their status matters in such a way that they have to eat “food” that is so odd just to prove their wealth and POWER which cycles the dining industry through a LOOP of unbearable livelihoods of cooks who lose their passion and love in cooking. This leads to why he let Margot escape. Chef Slowik is shown to have interest in her and we find out how comparable both characters are. They both had to struggle while also using the wealthy to make a living for themself as we also find out Margot was an escort of an older rich man found at the restaurant. Margot also was never interested in the types of MEALS the chef provided which he also liked because she was not furthering the damage already done to the dining industry like the CRITIC who dined there or Tyler who was her “date’. The critic even quoted herself she has caused the closings or downfalls of many livelihoods as we know she is referring to restaurants. Margot kept it REAL which is why she survived unlike TYLER who was a fraud and put himself in the worst position possible. He was the kind of person Slowik DESPISED because people like him further the thrive in the theory in what Slowik argued. The fact that food has lost its LOVE when being made in result of being cooked just for show to be EATEN by consumer elitist with no compassion or TASTE. That is why Margot got to live. She found out that the cheeseburger was how the chef first started and found his undying love for being a cook until it became all about food with no joy or love due to wealthy investors and guests who made it more dreadful, tiring, and COMPETITIVE. Margot was MINDFUL about the burger as the chef mentioned earlier in the movie it is about the TASTE and not just eating it. This is what the chef was looking for instead of some wealthy elitists approval of food which they dine so hard fa but can’t even remember the names of the dishes. Slowik wanted to know if the LOVE of FOOD was still there Margot got a chance to TASTE and confirm that it was still there for some people out there before being able to leave because she never cared too much for the fancy food anyways…what was the big deal if you will.
I love Any Tayolor Joy. She is so good and not your typical movie stat. Also Nicolas Hoult was SO great. I really do recommend watching the Great. Also the movie is so good but the scene in which Margot figures out what to do and does it is a masterpiece.
Cooking is chemistry and art. High-end cuisine is amazing, it's made with the best of the best ingredients, with the best techniques and by the best in the business. What I can say, as a chef and chef patissier is that I kind of understand where the chef character is coming from regarding how people take for granted that type of work or even underestimate how hard it is.
And not even just take advantage or underestimate but just flat out denigrate and treat it as "just food". People don't call music "just notes" or paintings "colour on canvas" or sculptures "just a rock". Sure, a lot of food is "just food" but there is artistry and passion and love that goes into so much of it that it's transformed. I can understand the pain.
People underestimate the work of everything. Before I managed a water treatment utility, I had no clue the vast universe of what's happening behind the scenes when you turn on a tap. Behind that single action you do everyday, there are people who have dedicated their lives to study and practice of making that happen, within an economic industry in the trillions worldwide. Water chemistry itself is an entire separate branch of scientific endeavour, entire libraries are dedicated to single specific aspects of water treatment, my system personally has spent millions over a decade trying to reduce just one single regulated contaminant. I've had equipment break down that's so unique and specific we had to hire people just to look for and get us a replacement, scouring the planet and then waiting 16 weeks to build it for us, and that's pretty normal. Most water treatment plants are one of a kind worldwide. In current society, ANY action we see as mundane and normal has a whole world behind the scenes that makes it happen in such a mundane fashion.
I'll sub. You guys are already WAY better than most reactors. You don't make little quips after every single line of dialogue - to the point you're missing vital plot information because you can't STFU for 20 seconds, like many reactors today. You guys obviously respect the art and that is rare in reaction channels these days, especially (no offense) with younger people.
37:09 There's a deleted scene where the women DO get bread with Man's Folly, and it IS as delicious as promised. You can even see Tyler eating some that he stole when Chef comes up to confront him about why he's there.
My favorite part of this culinary horror comedy is when the douche makes the inedible meal. The way they shoot the scene makes you taste how garbage the meal is and the reaction of the chef trying to eat it is priceless.
This movie is 100% a critique on the restaurant industry. What it has become and what others have made out of it instead of just enjoying the food. I hated Tyler as well, but I also think he did not get broken up with. I actually believe that since he knew what was going to happen (plot reveal), he decided to break up with her out of love and sacrifice a no name sex worker instead.
I had no idea where the movie was going, but I loved it. My favorite part was when Chef put Tyler in his place 😘👌 chef's kiss. Got to love Tyler's Bullshit

where i come from🇧🇷 its usual to take up to 4h at restaurants, for catching up with each others lifes, talking until you get sleepy of eating so much, its an event and i love it so much, culturaly i think its one of the best traditions in america latina
I've tried this sort of menu before, not this expensive bit similar concepts. The small portions is not a big deal because there's usually 8 to 12 courses so you're full at the end. More worth it with sushi omakase style in my opinion, but again, it gets hard to justify the more expensive it is
For someone who like the finer arts of food and restaurants and tries to visit them from now to then with my girlfriend we sat with open mouthes whenever the food arrived -but then both felt that nah.. this is a little too much for even us... I really loved the suddle smile when the burger were cooked and all his memories came back from when he liked to serve food. I were on Tyler's side at first because Margot clearly shouldn't bee there and shared no respect or interest of the food.. but then he made a really good job at turning me around to just hate him fully! The actor and his assistant were a little far fetched for just being in a bad movie and her not to have any loans.. but the rest had a reason in a twisted state of mind. All and all the movie were a breath of fresh air and it might not say that much due to how far along we are today -but this were one of the best movies of this year for me -hands down.
I ate at a tiny restaurant in Manhattan recently that was very much this experience in real life. You are what they made, and every dish was a work of culinary art. Never experienced anything like it, but the food was incredible! That said I was laughing To myself the entire evening thinking about this film

They didn’t fight back because they aren’t the kind of people who do their own dirty work they’re the rich and elites so they’re used to having others serve and do things for them exploiting the working man and those who serve them Slovik’s point is that they are not more than parasites, they exploit and survive off the works of others but can do nothing themselves. and they come to as you said accept it.
I saw it the other day with my mom and oh boy it was something else!! Definitely what drew me into watching this movie was Anya Taylor Joy and Ralph Finnes(Voldemort)
