I only had the accent for my first few years then we moved to Canada. I can almost always understand the accent having grown up with parents speaking that way. Funny thing though I was always surprised when after coming to my house several times friends would tell me me they couldn’t understand what my parents were saying. One even said when they talk she just smiles & nods her head.

It’s a lot easier for a Scottish person to understand the English, but yes. Any native English speaker can have a conversation with any other as long as people with particularly thick accents are able to tone them down. Source: Scottish

Accents and dialects are so broad here in the UK, we usually have family members with different accents, like I've got family with Welsh, Scouse, North Western, Southern Cornwall and Irish accents, so the majority of people don't struggle with understanding accents since it's just normal af, sometimes I don't even notice them unless someone point it out.
@domurtag1978
@domurtag1978 2 года назад
People who've been exposed to an accent, can usually understand it without much difficulty. For example, someone from Derry can likely understand a Cockney (London) accent, because they've heard it on TV, radio, etc. but the opposite is less likely to be true.
@cosmopolitan79
@cosmopolitan79 2 года назад
And one more thing, compared with the size of UK and Ireland. I think there are so many distinguished dialects. I came to visit Galway area, Ireland. I really had hard time what they were saying. But as I mentioned before, I found it so interesting and I really want to learn. kkk
