Hi Debra! did you get similar results with the Chun Plum / Smokey Merlot? I think next time I will try 3x each and see if I get a drip or at least a bit of movement. Let me know your thoughts!...and thanks for watching!! xo
I love your videos. Great glazes and I think I am going to switch clays from white to a darker clay. Not sure where you are based but, I would love to see your work in person.
Hi Leslie! Thank you soooo much!! Things to consider with black or dark clays, they are pricier but if you are like me, the colour outweighs the price difference. Also, they are not recommended for use in the microwave as they can get really hot due to the higher iron content...with this said, I've had some white or lighter mugs get pretty hot, but just read the label from the manufacturer. I'm located in Bowmanville, Ontario Canada. ☺☺☺
Great kiln load! Thanks for sharing. I love the chun plum/smokey merlot on that dark clay. I had a similar experience with Mason stain (deep crimson) burning out in a cone 6 firing. But I like the subtle results you got, so still a success, right?
Thank you Pat! I was disappointed with the pink clay results at first, but it’s grown on me. I just expected it to be more intense, but like you said it burned out. Oh well! I do feel it’s a success and after hearing from you all I’m even more confident with it! Thank you again!! I’m going to post the video on the pink mugs soon! 🤭😊
@@SarahWaltonPottery a wise person told me that if I don't like a piece as it comes out of the kiln, put it away for a week or two. Then come back and look at it with fresh eyes. Sometimes we are so wrapped up in what we expect that we can't see the gift that was given to us!
I sanded the blemish down and that seemed to fix it...no wire is used, I just use the clay and with the thin clay band wrapped around seems to work. I've been using them and tossing in the dishwasher and utensil drawer and they are still going strong. Thanks you!!
Amazing works , so talented!, please more videos . Questions for Q &A ‘s , how’s did you get started in pottery , start up costs , how to sell your works , suppliers , when to invest in equipment…
Hi Sara! I’m glad to be back!! Thanks for waiting for me! 🤭 One of the black clay the Laguna one is groggy, the very dark mug and the plum mugs. But the tequila sippers is a black clay that is smooth from Pottery Supply House. I find that the glazes seem to interact very similarly but just smoother on the non groggy clay. Hope that makes sense.
That does make sense. Thank you! Would you be willing to drop a list of all glazes you’ve found to work with the groggy black clay? Or even just black or dark brown clay in general? I’m struggling finding them. I’m in the US. But most glazes are available here. Thank you!
Awesome kiln unload. Cut fingers makes u a true potter lol. Pink n purple stains need at least 3 times as much as u think u need then fire in the coolest part of your kiln. Love yours vids Nat at mud magic Sydney Australia xx
I loved the pink mug but it disappeared too quickly! I saw the glaze combo you did on them from your comment below so that's great. Do you ever have a problem with the black clay bloating? I tried it once and it was very finicky but maybe the brand you used is more forgiving.
Hi Sondra! Thank you! I was quick with the pink mug on purpose🤭 I’m going to finish editing the video with all the steps and I show how I glaze too. As for your question about black clay, only once did I have bloating with a mix of black and white marble, I refired it as I didn’t use enough glaze on the first firing, I got the results with the glaze but I did get a little bloating so it’s kinda rough/bumpy to the touch. So I’ve kept them as wine tumblers. Other then that I’ve been very lucky when using black clay..my favourite it the PSH 540i smooth and very accepting to a variety of glazes.
Thank you! It was quite by accident. I'd not tested Emerald Falls & Textrued Turquoise on that clay body...It really did look black except under the handle where the only trace of the teal was revealed. And it gave off a bit of. molten look at the bottom where the glaze met the clay reveal...a pleasant surprise...I'm waiting to get more of this clay body, tho I may try it on another black clay and see if i get similar results 🤔😊
@@SarahWaltonPottery please do :) love watching your videos. every time you get so excited to open up your kiln it feels like Xmas morning hehe. Also I wanted to thank you for sharing these beautiful glazing tips especially for newbies like myself that don’t really know where to start ! You rock lady! ❤️ 💜 ♥️ keep on shiningggggg ⭐️
Thank you sooo much! I’ve listed all the clay used for each piece during the Photo Recap part. I know it goes fast, so pause on the pots you like and you’ll be able to see all the details. Thanks for watching!! 🥰
@@SarahWaltonPottery I was so excited of your work that I didn’t wait until the end to ask. Thanks for the prompt response. Love your work, new subscriber here.
Hi KD!! Hope you like it! I’ve got a fair bit more lined up! I recently retired from my FT gig (3 weeks ago) so I’ve got the time on my hands that was missing! Xo
@@SarahWaltonPottery praying I can find a way to retire, I want to have my hand in the clay and that FT work stuff certainly gets in the way. Got to "Unwind" watching you when I got home last night. Sure love seeing you in your happy place, even if we bleed it is better then just about anywhere else. I literally stabbed my thumb the other day removing a prop. HA HA we will survive! Thank you for sharing with all of us!
@@kdwalters4146 don’t work too hard!! My retirement was somewhat forced, as the store I managed closed its doors 🥹. We really didn’t recover after COVID as my store was in the heart of the financial district in DT Toronto..with my customers ‘working from home’ or on hybrids the Corp decided to close..I’m very excited tho, after 30 years with MAC. It’s time for a new chapter. My last day at work was on my 55th bday! So retirement it is! I’m going to go hard with my Pottery Side Hustle now turned FT! The Universe is giving me the time to make this all happen so you’ll be seeing a lot of me!! 😁 I’ll cross my fingers that you can take the leap soon too!! 😘
Stunning kiln reveal. Love how you get color to show on the black clay. Also, I have to ask, my maiden name is Walton and have family from Scotland, Wyoming and Idaho. Wonder if we're related. 😊
Thank you!! My father was working on our family tree a few years ago, I know for sure that I’ve got relatives in England and Scotland…but my roots are in the Caribbean, believe it or not!! So if your Walton bloodline is traced to Barbados then we probably are related🤭😊
@@SarahWaltonPottery Sooo cool. I'm at the age where I'm interested in family history. I'll let you know if I find out. We could be pottery cousins, lol!
