Took a single drawing class back in high school, a long long time ago... all I keep hearing in the back of my mine every time I watch one of your finishing videos is my teacher telling me ... always place the lightest light next to the darkest dark and make your darks darker and your lights lighter... excellent work, keep those ancient techniques coming. thank you for all the great work you do for the hobby.

I'm only two minutes in and already I have an answer to one of the questions that's been frustrating the hell out of me for six straight months. "What's the difference between a wash and a glaze?" How hard was that, people!! Geez! Thank you, man. You got a sub out of those two minutes alone.

Beautiful work. Thank you very much for your help is always appreciated. I have been painting my whole life and you are very knowledgeable I'm still able to learn a lot. Out of curiosity what kind of compressor are you using on your air brush? I have a 1 gallon compressor it sounds like a damn freight train what is the alternative here aside from buying a million-dollar airbrush compressor?

I had to look up and compare other sources to find out what a glaze actually is. 1 - You can use a wash *and* a glaze on a miniature. They are not mutually exclusive, nor are they supposed to be used as replacements for one-another. There is no "versus" here. 2 - A wash is used on top of a base, while a glaze is used on top of layers, to blend contrasts. 3 - Both will pool in recesses, but while a wash will definitely seek to do that by itself, a glaze is better at staying where you put it. 3a - Some confusion here as the Ruby glaze that Kenny uses, starts to pool around the bottom of the nose, causing a fix to be needed later on. 4 - Both are used to darken the mini. Washes are meant to darken recesses and create the basis for contrast while a glaze is used to bridge contrasts between the wash and layers, also by darkening where it is applied. 4a - More confusion here (for newbies like me at least), as Kenny uses the glaze to highligt. As far as I understand, you're supposed to highlight with layers and then control the contrast with the glaze, rather than just plopping on more layers to fix everything. Kenny, if you happen to read this so long after you posted the vid, please let me know if I got anything wrong. You're a talented and experienced painter and I enjoy your videos quite a lot.

We can sub categorize it all day. Glazing is just painting really really thin. You can make things darker, or lighter. You can use it to blend opaque "not really really thin" sections together. You can glaze something to just shift the color and not change the value. Basically terms like "shading" and "layering" are the real confusion.They can be applied to literally any technique. If I glaze in some black to the shadowy area am I not "shading" ? GW further causes confusion by selling "layers" "bases" glazes" etc. Literally any paint is a glaze or wash if you want it to be.
@npc6817
@npc6817 2 года назад
My man it's way easier than that Wash: more opaque, spread over a surface pools in the recesses, makes for quick shading and works amazing on detail rich parts Filter: can be more or less transparent, is spread evenly over the surface to obtain a uniform tint, used either to correct tone or blend a transition. Glaze: similar to a filter, but usually more on the transparent side, only applied to a part of the piece. They can be used for any transition, wether to shade, highlight or even to get a color gradient

Question Kenny! I'm in the process of painting some Guijia mechs from the Infinity Corvus belli line like the yellow one you painted. I'm wanting to paint an effect. The effect is a "decloaking camouflage" (predator style) that looks like it's transitioning from a jungle camouflage to the actual color of the mech. The problem is in the line of the two colors transitioning, I want the transition effect to look like "hexagon netting" breaking apart. Since the hexagon are so thin and geometrical, I need some way to mask the area in those shapes to make the transitions properly. Soooooo my main man Kenny how would you approach this?

Kenny's got the best skills I've every seen with an airbrush. I was binging on his tutorials. Busting out hoards of minis in no time and they look hell'a tight (has to throw in that west coast vernacular). Quick question... I have a huge Husky air compressor at work, but that thing makes more noise than a jackhammer and the only time I have to paint is when the kids go to sleep. If I buy an air storage tank would that help with the noise? Would a 5 gal storage tank be enough? I'm just painting minis and terrain

3 questions... why the glove... for the obvious reason or something to do with oil in the skin... what brush are you using, and can you just use any wash/ink mixed with matte medium to make your glaze? Thanks. Great work.
@IHateYoutubeHandles615
@IHateYoutubeHandles615 5 лет назад
It protects the skin from paint, and allows you to just strip off the glove and put a new one on if you get the glove contaminated with paint. It also can give you a finer grip, and even the color of the glove can help you see what's going on. And yes, finally it keeps skin oils off the mini and presumably reduces the chance of abrasive skin from wearing on already painted parts of the mini. Mostly though it gives you ca clean 'operating theater' and allows you to easily restore cleanliness by just putting on a new glove.

I’d love to see you paint more game minis like Zombicide etc. You’re great at painting of course, but I find it tough to transfer some lessons to the board game crafted minis. They tend to not be as sharp.

Blending without Glaze is pretty hard, the paints dry way too fast, if I add too much water it will create a sharp edge and need to use a damp clean brush to blur it. Ordered some Glaze medium to try it out.

Of course, your problem might be trying to use black paint for the skin. If you look at Ethiopian skin or Africans from Chad, it's near-black brown (not black). You also only use black for shadows and hair and sometimes lips, and then you use white for light, which is most likely only possible with an airbrush because it sounds terribly impossible. And, of course, you would naturally highlight black hair with grey/white. And even on the darkest of faces themselves, there is some paleness and redness because they still have blood and such all the same as any other human. They also have a lot going on in the lips. Hope this helps.

Sorry, but what you are doing is not glazing, even though you want to say that you are using the shade/wash differently, what you are really doing is just applying the shade directly in the recesses. This is still shading, like Duncans videos. He uses this alot. Basically you can shade in two ways: 1. Shade all over quickly and bring the back the layers. 2. Slowly shade in recesses, but save time by not having to re-layer.
@NextLevelPainting

I glazed over the larger surfaces to add reds to the over all skin tone then narrowed the focus into the recesses.

"A glaze is a thin transparent or semi-transparent layer on a painting which modifies the appearance of the underlying paint layer" Sure looks like glazing to me....
@ShipWreck68
@ShipWreck68 6 лет назад
Shadowing is making the color darker within the same color scale. Glazing is changing the tint of a color underneath it that is NOT in the same color scale. This video is someone shading. He might be using the wrong terminology but it still is a good video and obviously, the piece comes out looking great.
@matthewclomo5265
@matthewclomo5265 6 лет назад
anthony adams guess it depends on your art training and how words are used, for me it’s glazing. Also it can’t be just shading by your own definition because he also highlights here.
