Kate is a master when it comes to choosing which glaze colors to pair together and layer. She demonstrates how to apply underglaze transfers and then how best to highlight the design with glazes. With an art degree and an art teacher, she knows her stuff when it comes to using the color wheel and which glazes compliment each other.

WoW!! Well done, Kate! I have been potting for over 30 years and the one thing I haven't tried is transfers. Thanks for the terrific video, great explanations of your method and sharing glaze information. I am now inspired to order and try them! I have gotten so much inspiration from Tiffini and hope she can be back in the studio soon, but in the meantime, it is so great to hear from her students, what a gift!

Tiffany, thank you for sharing your students with us. I hope you continue to heal. Kate, thank you for sharing your knowledge of glazing. It is my least favorite thing to do, though you wouldn’t think so looking at all the glazes I have on my shelves. You answered one of the questions I face each time I glaze and that is what to do at the rim. It seems there isn’t a right or wrong way to do it and I appreciate that.

Thank you Kate, I really enjoyed your presentation. You demystified how to choose colors, I also loved your suggestions about looking at colors around us even how we dress ourselves. 😊. I like the wave on drippy glazes ( first time I heard this tip explained clearly). I am so glad too for the community Tiff has built here.

Excellent job with your video Kate, and thank you for sharing your knowledge of glazing with us! I got a lot of useful information and can’t wait to get out in my studio and start glazing since I have most all the glazes you talked about. I’d never thought of pairing some of them together, but I’ll be experimenting soon. Thanks so much!❤

Absolutely enjoyed this tutorial. I also am into glazes. I own over 200 brush-on and 10 dipping. Thank you Kate, for showing me something new and sharing your knowledge. With all the colors on your display table, it looked like a party🎉

Hi Tiffany. You must have been a very good teacher, even if you do not have a degree in any of the ceramic arts,I have said this before your teaching shows through and because of this your students can talk and explain so well. And obviously are making great strides towards teaching themselves And others. these student are the teachers of the future and I will admit, (1) I watch to see how you make things and (2) the glazes that you use. As my club makes their own glazes it still gives me an insight as to which glazes to use. I make my own glazes and it is just so much as matching colours to go together. I do love all of your videos. Even though I do not use your glazes it does give my thoughts forward and this helps all potters. Thank you and all of your students

My gosh this is sooo helpful and educational!! Thank you both so much. I stopped putting colored glazes in insides of my mugs, vases etc but I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the different but complimentary color on the inside!! How fun!!! What was the name of the spectrum glaze color that you use as a liner glaze that goes with everything? I LOVE THE WAY YOU USE YOUR TEST TILES!! That’s absolutely brillllliant!!!

Hi, thank you! The glaze is called “Floating Celadon” from their floating line. I’ve only ever fired it to cone 5, and it always turns out great.

why don't you use wax resist to protect the bottom of the mug where the transfers are?
@melrussell7830

Lovely thank you, I just wanted to ask is the transfer okay without clear glaze over it with dishwashing?
@katehall5547
@katehall5547 3 месяца назад
Hi Kate here, good question. Yes, after the glaze firing the transfers adhere really good and stand up to the hot temperatures and wetness of the dishwasher without fading. I worried about that a little bit too when i first started making them. I have several mugs that I have made like this that my family uses daily, and they have stood up to the dishwasher great. Most of them are about a year old and still look as good as new.

Please tell us if you pour your mugs or throw them. If clay, is it mid fire clay. Are your glazes cone 6?
@hobblecreekpottery

Kate throws them on the wheel, using bmix cone 5/6. And glazes are cone 5/6.
