Not to put anybody else down, but these guys (to me) are two of the best examples of genuine musical genius. They could play their songs, someone else's songs, alone, or paired with any combination of other performers...and it was ALWAYS great. Literally almost unbelievable!!!
Amen to that! I saw both of them live and neither one was a disappointment. Glen Campbell had more God given talent than anyone I’ve ever seen. As for Leon he was the GOAT on the piano and amazing song writer. Miss both of them terribly 😢
True, and Leon Russell hasn't received proper accolades for his piano playing either. Saw him live last year and even though he looked like a big, stuffed, Santa Claus in a cowboy hat , he still played that piano better than I've ever heard.
Both Leon and Glen were very well known in the music industry for their session work. Leon Russell's list of appearances on records reads like a who's who! These men are incredibly talented musicians that have been largely forgotten by the general public. Love them both.
For the record, Glenn received the highest compliments from his guitar peers! From Eddie Van Halen to Roy Clarke, the list is endless of those who requested one on one lessons from the fabulous session player extroadinar!
Bruce Stewart - Very true, and you can add rock giants Paul McCartney and Brian Wilson to that list. Glen Campbell was very highly regarded in the music world in general.
@@mcdaniels6188 There's an article that states Eddie Van Halen once asked Alice Cooper to book him a guitar lesson with Glen Campbell. Cooper said Van Halen was in awe of the country music legend.
@@Woozler554 I love stories like that. When someone like Eddie, whom you'd think would never be influenced by someone like Glen Campbell, is, and actually looks to him as someone who can teach him new tricks.
@@Woozler554 Not surprised that Brian Wilson complimented him. They were very good friends from Glen's Wrecking Crew days when he worked with "The Beach Boys" (mostly just Brian Wilson).
Glen is probably THEE most underrated guitarist of all time (that I know of). I used to think it was Prince, but even he said Glen is the greatest guitarist he knew. Another Glen story: Eddie went to play golf with Alice, and asked if he "was gonna get Glen to play?" Eddie didn't care about golf, he wanted to meet him hoping to get a guitar lesson from him. Edward Van Halen wanted a lesson from Glen Campbell. THAT'S how good Glen was. Can't believe I've only found this out in the last year. Enjoy, unless you're a close minded blockhead like I had been most of my life (with music anyway)
I grew up in the seventies, and was into The Who and Pink Floyd and didn't give him a chance. In fact, I cheered when he got bashed in the face in the movie True Grit. Yet here I am...
These guys were just amazing. I was a dumb kid and didn't realize how talented Glenn Campbell was. Now as an adult I can really appreciate him. The man died of Alzheimer's recently. How sad for him and a great loss for us. Then of an era with these guys.... Takes me back.
WHY DO YOU MAKE SUCH A DUMB CLICHE COMMENT ? UNDER APPRECIATED BY WHO ? NOBODY I KNOW ? HE WAS A REAL GUITAR PLAYER ? COME ON ! REALLY ? HE WAS A SESSION'S GUITAR PLAYER. YOU DON'T GET TO DO THAT IF YOU'RE NOT REALLY GOOD.
Inasmuch as you and John Hamilton are clearly on the same side, I'm assuming you were drunk when you posted your comment. I don't even know the guy except for the fact that he didn't deserve your criticism.
Absolutely, pure genius. Only when you play guitar can you realise what he’s doing, he’s playing his solo over the correct chords without any effort whatsoever ! The result is a lyrical solo which fits in with the song exactly with the occasional country note..
Amen. One of a kind. Sorely missed. So classy, even near the end when his daughter assisted in performances, it was classy, fun and great to hear and watch. So tough, knowing he'd be unable to continue. Gone too soon.
Both members of the legendary "Wrecking Crew". If there were awards for session work, these guys would need a warehouse to hold them all. Both are wonderful folks, and time is running out.
Leon has been involved in a whole lot of the rock music of our lives. it's great that Elton John rescued him and got some well deserved attention for Leon's talents.
WOW... both Glenn and Leon were such an amazing musicians and could play just about anything on cue without even rehearsing. Musicians like that are NOT a dime a dozen like many that we have today.
@@jamesmcbeth4463 He knew the Nashville Number System. That and Travis picking is all you need to know. The bass player for Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell, Jan Brown, and Honk took a down and out punk rock kid and taught me that. Changed my life forever. I'll always love punk and a ton of other music, but you have to go to Nashville if you want to find a guy who could play this. Or Riverside/Palm Springs where my old buddy lives.
@@jamesmcbeth4463 My buddy who taught me a lot about guitar also told me all about the wrecking crew. He was really stoked to have played with Hal Blaine, though he was quick to add that didn't make him part of the wrecking crew. He played with so many and had a great time at it.
Joseph Boller is it not an injustice how Leon Russell is all but lost to the sand's of time . . . it should be cut in stone what that man has produced . . .
The general public might not know about Leon but those in the music biz know EXACTLY who he is, and have been in awe of his talents for over 50 yrs. How many artists can boast 2 Beatles, 2 Stones, Steve Winwood, Joe Cocker and Eric Clapton helping out on their 1st solo album.
As Tony Bennett was famously said to be the "singer's singer" by Sinatra, so these two are "musicians' musicians", like Levon Helm and Garth Hudson of The Band.
Shawn bm Fuckin Eh, like I'v said elsewhere We have the technology so either we keep them alive or clone em, otherwise the future of music is very bleak.......
Marvelous musicians all of them. Re Heartbreak Hotel Glenn says, "What key's it in?" so Leon starts playing and they all pick up on it in an instant. Wonderful.
Glen Campbell was a studio musician before he became popular. Many, many British guitarists thought Glen Campbell was incredibly talented but he never reached that pinnacle in this Country.
Not one of them is as versatile as Glen Campbell was in his prime and not one of them were as fun to watch as Glen Campbell. Comparing apples to oranges.
@@docmalthus I agree on that Glen to me was a hack until I had to fill in for a flat picker at a blue grass festival. Glenn was the opener and I had no idea what a fantastic guitar player he was, I had to eat my lunch and had a chance to talk with him he was so humble and approachable. I was 18 with a jazz background and we had some laughs together about he heard me stick some modal scales in my solos.. He loved it. He said kid it worked. That dude could play flat out crazy. To this day I cover Wichita Lineman In his honor. By the way as far as I know Glen never wrote a song. This was written by James Taylor.
I never heard that 1st song before. When Leon started playing Heartbreak Hotel I thought "That doesn't sound like the song I've heard." It seems as if he made up that arrangement on the spot. Such talent and humility.
Dem Boyz were part of the “Wrecking Crew Gang” hence every artist and musicians during those days knew they were the ***BEST*** at the instruments they played - PERIOD!!
For me, Gentle On My Mind's most emotional line (which he omits here) is "Through cupped hands, round a tin can, I pretend to hold you to my breast and find". The internal rhyme packs an extra punch.
Is there any great music in my entire lifetime that the great Leon Russell wasn't involved with in one way or another? What an amazing man; what an amazing talent. I am SO grateful to Elton John for helping get Leon the long overdue recognition he deserved by getting him inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
@@melancholiac OK fair enough but I like it when he added bits of jazz guitar interspersed btwn lines of lyrics. He did this w more confidence and freedom when older than in his younger days. This was also a Ray Charles thing and they loved each other.
I was hooked on Leon, in the 70's from hearing him on WBRU, in Providence, R.I. I didn't know his hair went white back in the early 80's. I hope they still hang out! Leon was right about the movies, Elvis made, and Elvis knew that, that's what started the depression and drugs. But we all love those movie's.
+Carol Napolitano I did not know that Leon's hair went white in the 80's either. I've seen footage of Leon in 2015, and he looks the same as he looks right here!
Wbru! Yes! Before it went commercial. Saw Leon Russell at Berkeley Performance theater in Boston with my friend Mike I who turned me on to lots of great music and WBRU.we took some kind of drugs and walked into the center out of the daylight on a Saturday afternoon and it was a trip!call Mike died in New Hampshire in the White mountains hit a moose in his car RIP buddy
My Mom loved Glen Campbell and she had one of his first albums, one called "The Amazing Twelve String Guitar of Glen Campbell". Between the two of us, we could have possibly worn the grooves off of the vinyl record. Couldn't believe that a human being's fingers could produce such heavenly sounds.
Rest in Peace Leon, you truly made a difference on this earth. Two of the absolute greatest musician in the World! Thank you for all the great music and so many wonderful memories. :)
Both amazing artists... I remember my Dad playing this in our kitchen. I would just have woken up and he would make me dance with him. I was a teenager at the time and was not interested now I miss those days.
