That is SO cool . . I can only hope you’ve enjoyed Glen’s music as much as millions of Americans have over the years. My dad turn me on to Mr. Campbell in 1968. His music reminds me of my father.
Thats my dad kenny on acoustic guitar and uncle russell on bass... so honored to have memories of glen tousling my hair as a kid and making his donald the duck impressions... so many fond memories. I miss Glen. Rest in peace 🙏
I’m an African American man, grew up surrounded by rap, r&b etc. I listened to this song and stood right in my kitchen and tears ran down my face.. I read the story behind this song and listened and it’s really amazing.
I first heard this when it came out, and thought what a hauntingly great song. Who is this singer. Later I realized thst he played on a multitude of hits with the Wrecking Crew. Fantastic, just fantastic!
My Dad was a lineman in the Midwest for 35 years. He walked in 5 minutes late to work one morning and his boss asked him why he was late. He explained that Wichita Lineman came on the radio as he was pulling in. The whole crew nodded approvingly and his boss said it was an acceptable excuse. Glen Cambell was such a legend.
My father in law was a lineman. Husband also worked in a related field. It is a dangerous job and I pray for their service and safety. God bless your father.
African American woman listening and can never get enough of this song. This was a beautiful man, beautiful heart and beautiful spirit. Just listening takes you to another place far above the issues of this world. One of the all time greats.
African American male here. But I'm an old man and learned years ago to appreciate ALL music and not just the music that corresponds to your race. Rhinestone Cowboy and Wichita Lineman are my all-time favorite Glen Campbell songs. But Wichita Lineman brings tears to my eyes now whenever I hear it since Glen Campbell passed away :'-(
I'm here in Dallas Texas 60 years old.. it's March 29 2024 and I'm taken back to a time back in the day😢❤❤❤❤ .. still affects me the same way.... thank you Glenn. RIP. beautiful beautiful song and music.
Man........I am a 56-year-old black male, And every time I hear this song my heart is filled with so much warmth. This guy ( Glen Campbell was a gift that keeps on giving ).
I am an African American grandmother. I was living in Dallas, Texas, 1968, and I was 20, when this was released. The first time I heard this on the radio....I just couldn't get enough of it! It was so melodic, so heart-wrenching.....and I just LOVE minor chords within a song. This was not being played on the R&B station, KNOK, at the time; so I would hunt through all the channels until I found a Country Western Station, or POP station so I could hear this gem. I have never forgotten this song. It tells such a beautiful story of love. RIP Mr. Campbell, from one 'crossover sister.'
A black woman who grew up listening to a variety of music thanks to my Kentucky-born dad. Glen Campbell is a legend. IMO…this is his signature song. ❤️
Good music is UNIVERSAL. I am a 50 year old Black woman that grew up in Williamsburg, VA. My dad loved Patti Page and my mom loved Hank Williams and Alan Jackson. They listened to country music as well as Aretha, Sam Cook and Johnny Mathis. I am so thankful I can appreciate all music because my parents exposed me to a wide variety. When Glen Campbell came on the radio my parents would sing along. One of my best memories is of the three of us singing Wichita Lineman together and on key (smile). I miss the music of my youth so very much.
Music brings us all together, it’s fantastic. Im also in my 50s now who grew up in NYC so I listened to alot of Pop and Rap which I don’t even like now 😅 I didn’t start appreciating the likes of Glenn Campbell until later in life.
61 year old white man in Fort Wayne, Indiana..... big fan of all of the names you mentioned, and let's not forget the late great Marvin Gaye. God bless you and your Loved Ones ❤️
Agree with these comments I attended this concert and it was probably the best musically live performance I’ve ever seen I flew from Australia the night before
I'm almost 62 and I never appreciated Glen Campbell in the 70s like I do now. I realize what a genius he was and is the most underrated guitar player of all-time. I listened to this video 3 times because I can.
I'll be 62 in 10 days and would have been in high school just like you at that time ( in a northern large city for me). High School kids weren't listening to him then -- though as a grade schooler I saw his variety show. Luckily I had much older parents & adult siblings so I was exposed to lots of different music, even Hank Williams Sr. In 6th grade, I bought Johnny Cash's live San Quentin album.
It's insane how many late 50s through mid 60s songs he played on: "Tequila", "Pet Sounds"/"Help Me Rhonda"/"Fun Fun Fun"/etc., "Strangers In The Night", "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'", "Mary, Mary" (Monkees), "Somethin' Stupid". So in a way he was the American Jimmy Page (only he did it first) LOL!
Yes me too I My father and I listened to this song it was his favorite he passed away the next day. Donald Gordon Croucher Wing Commander RAAF squadron leader Second World War
I tell my wife that this is for her. All the nights I got called out at 2am to fix an outage, all the evenings where a thunderstorm rolled through and I was out fixing problems all night. The song strikes a chord - you want to be home, but the company needs you on the line...
Thank all of you for the dangerous job you do! Our 🙏 are with you when folks like you band together to help the areas hit by tornados and hurricanes. May our good Lord keep you safe. ❤️
I hear ya. All the time I was growing up my Dad was always called to go out in the worst storms & climb those poles when lightning was flashing all around. When I was older I went with him on what he called a trouble call a few times & watched from inside the truck while he got someone's lights back on. I remember that so vividly, & my Dad actually was a Wichita Lineman!! He was such a great man, I miss him terribly.
This HAS to be one of the most beautiful songs ever written. And this particular performance is on another level. Glen was one of those rare performers who’s voice actually got better with age. NO ONE could do this song any better.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written and the melody is just so very good. Well done Glen, love this and RIP, we still enjoying your songs and guitar playing.
That song just makes me choke up. I know this song is old, but why can't we get back to music like this? Such a golden voice Glen had. I bet he's keeping God entertained with some great music.
Totally agree. Simple, sincere and from the heart - and sung beautifully! Glen Campbell could sing and play the guitar expertly and with feeling. Just an amazing talent.
My mum just passed away and this was one of her favourite songs. I just heard it in the bar in the Fairmount hotel in Austin Texas. Am on holiday with my 2 daughters watching this in tears. Thanks for everything mum. ❤️❤️
I work for PBS. This concert special was recorded with Glen and the South Dakota Symphony in 2001 and was released on both CD and DVD. It’s 21 tracks of magic.
I live in Sicily. If it wasn't for an American radio broadcasting from Sigonella Air Base, caught late at night during a long drive home, I would never have heard of Mr. Campbell. I didn't know who he was, so I kept in mind that magic line - and I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time - until I got home and googled it. What a fortunate discovery. Knowing about his condition, I can't help being grateful for what he is leaving us with: all the emotions and memories of a time where songwriting was a much more thoughtful, heartfelt and inherently artistic act than it is today.
Campbell was a true cross-over musician who appealed to people from all backgrounds. I see lots of African-Americans like myself appreciating his musical legacy. Good music unifies us all.
@@Clarence2Worley you are definitely right Ib miss this man and the memory of meeting him here in the UK will keep him with me . Beautiful voice -effortless
I'm a rock guy and definitely don't normally have time for country music, but this must be one of the most beguiling and haunting songs in terms of chord structure, melody and feel. Brilliant
The only thing wrong with this song is how short it is. Otherwise it is clearly a masterpiece. NOBODY in the last 20-30 years has produced anything even close to this quality. Glen Campbell's music will be remembered generations beyond him.
"I need you more than want you. And I want you for all time" ONE OF THE BEST LINES in any song on earth. Where did that "and I'm doin' fine" line come from. He's not doing fine, he's lonely and sad.
Wholeheartedly agree. At first it may come off difficult to interpret but you need to look at the simplicity of of that statement to fully recognize the meaning.
@@dwaynereese1047 Roy was incredible. One of a kind. Rockabilly music with an operatic voice. I have said many times that when Roy did a song, he owned it. No one covered it because no one could measure up. Except Glen. I saw Glen do "Crying", and it was every bit as well done as Roy did it. Hard to tell the difference.
Wow. Maybe the most beautiful song ever written, sung by one of the most perfect voices with his brilliant guitar playing. There are no words for Glen’s talent. Just gorgeous.
That song has the best line I have ever heard - "I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time". Almost everytime I hear it, I cry, because it's perfect.
What a song!! What a singer!! His voice is so full of feeling and sentiment no one else has ever sang like him. He WILL be sadly missed. May God alleviate his voyage to oblivion and enter the night quietly. God bless him and his family.
@@colinrogers71 yeah and as more of the Great Artists pass away the void is filled with rubbish.... I am grateful to Mr. Campbell, the Carpenters, Elvis, The Eagles, Tony Bennett, the Bee Gees, Willie Nelson, and so many others.... Journey....
Glen Campbell. Wrecking Crew guitarist. Hear it. He was a master and I'm glad his talent has been recorded. We're all gonna fade and die but only a few are worth keeping. Glen is forever.
The Wrecking Crew were unique. A group of world class session musicians that will never be repeated. Most 1960 -70 recording artists owe their success to theses amazing players. Just thinking of all the hit records the Wrecking Crew played on without any fanfare, brings a lump to my throat.
Just talked about him on the news. I think the family had to put him under some kind of full time care now. There was a female and male talking about him. Idk if children or Niece and Nephew. I was asleep and part of one of his songs woke me up. Love Glen Campbells music. Anyway the reporter asked if he still plays the guitar and the male said he has a couple guitars in his room and can still play better than him on a bad day. Lol. Ok just read up on him. He is a resident at Nashville Memory Care and in the final stages of Alzheimers. So sad. We just lost Gene Wilder to it. I will confess though, this is my favorite Glen Campbell song. Driving to the farm with Dad as a kid in the seventies and this song came on. I fell in love with it then. It always reminds me of that memory and my childhood. And you are right, Glen is forever.
I have to love that line "can still play better than him on a bad day". It has the sadness of Glen's condition and the blazing glory of Glen's ability. We are all frail and die but some of us make life worthwhile.
Even factoring in all the accolades he's received over the years, I still consider Glen Campbell to be so very underrated. A prolific entertainer; an incomparable singer with perfect diction, timing, pitch, and with a natural smoothness to his voice. One of the best guitar players there ever has been. A writer, an actor, a comedian, a host. He acted with John Wayne in True Grit, as well as sang the theme song. His talent was tremendous, a gift from God. I will miss him so much--
so well said... we have the legacy of his beautiful music, now he is impacting people educating them about Alzheimer's disease, which may reach as many people as he has with his music....love the man...
Yes, I was a 9 or 10 year old when I heard this. I recorded the radio on an old new fangled cassette recorder. I loved this song then and still do. "I'm Glen Campbell and I'm happy to be here", my favorite line in this video. He truly was.......
Well ... There are folks who are just musically ignorant and / or tone deaf and clueless and want to stay that way. Happens when I try to tell people about Jesus, my Savior ...
My son is mentally handicapped, loves music and only pays Tom Jones, I played this for him and he cried. Glen if you only knew how much your voice and songs moved people
Phill Smith poor people couldn't hear his voice. Proud to be an ear taught 2nd generation Deffenbaugh. My dad was truely gifted and loved pure clear harmonies as well. It's a disadvantage when you try to learn to play an instrument from music.
"And I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time." I've been watching videos of Glen and this has to be the best version of this song. It incorporates every good thing from previous recordings, in my opinion.
A I group up a rock ‘n’ roller. Glen Campbell wasn’t my type of music. It wasn’t until I grew up that I realized what a musical genius and legend he was.
This is by far the best version ever recorded. His ascending "And I need you more than want you" after the great Fender Strat solo brings a tear. Every. Single. Time.
I think I love this video of him best because the song, the orchestra backing him up, and the guitar solo he does !! Pure Glen Campbell at his best !!! His voice was so clear and strong !! He is so missed !!!
Glen Campbell was an uplifting voice in the messed up world I grew up in the 70's. I spent time in a few foster homes and an orphanage as well. But his music was wonderful to me.
I remember when I first heard "Wichita Lineman " on the radio in 1968, just like it was yesterday. This song was captivating then and still is -captivating.
Seven years ago my husband was given less than 2 weeks to live he dedicated this song to me along with Glen Campbells "Gentle on my mind" RIP Baby' you were my gift in life' and these songs only keep reminding me your gift lives on...❤️
I’m sure he did so because,,,,and I need you more than want you and I’ll want you for all time. That man loves you with all his heart. You are blessed and will see him again
As an ex lineman I love this song. My Dad use to play this on a turntable many years ago when I was young when he worked for Polygram here in New Zealand. Little did I know that I would be doing this for a job later in life. Great song and it brings back memories of my Dad who passed a few years ago. We both loved this song.
I'm 61 and I remember when this used to come on the radio I'd be in my room I loved this song so much and I also saw him sing it on the Glen Campbell show when I was a kid we used to watch that 😁❤️
The audience should have been STANDING AFTER THAT PERFORMANCE , THE GREAT GLEN CAMPBELL FOLKS , THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER ONE LIKE HIM , THE WORLD LOST A GREAT TALENT.
I've watched this particular video a thousand times and I cry every time...he was a part of my life from a little girl listening to his records til the day he passed. God bless you Glen...I will NEVER forget you❤️
@George Dave The powerful lyrics alone are quite moving- that an electrical lineman, an ordinary Joe, can have such poetic, elevated thoughts in his soul. Plus Glen Campbell has a great poignant voice. I believe during this time it was finally disclosed that he was suffering from Alzheimer's, so the different line he sings at the end is especially touching.
In 1967, I will never forget this. My mother took me grocery shopping in Santa Ana, Ca. to a Stater Brothers grocery store. I was only 10 years old. She asked me if there were any 'Albums" that I were interested in, I happened to say that I like Glen Campbell....She bought me 'Wichita Lineman". I took it home and played it on the family 'Motorola' stereo system. WL was the finest song that I have ever heard up to that point. To this day, I will never forget how totally awesome this song was!!!!
😂 You talking about the one on W. Edinger? I've been to that Stater Brothers plenty of times! Was my grandpa's only grocery stop until he died. In the 90's though! My mom said it had been there for as long as she could remember. Not sure about now, haven't been there in decades.
Song was written by Jimmy Webb the request of Glen Campbell. This version with a full backing orchestra is just amazing. Incredible piece of pop music both lyrically and in arrangement.
I remember listening to this song on the car radio when I was just a very little child, maybe 5 or 6 and it was a song that to this very day is one of my personal all-time favorites. I will be 60 in February and it’s funny how music can immediately transport you right back to that place and time; for me it’s long 12 hour road trips in the family car with my 4 older sisters, Mommy and Daddy, (yes, I’m southern) on a visit to my grandparents house. My parents are both gone now and 1 beautiful sister, too, but just for the few minutes of listening, they are all right here beside me and all is right with my world! Thank you Mr Campbell for helping keep my memories alive and to all the great music and musicians that truly ARE the soundtrack to our lives!
His backing musicians are smiling as they play. Pure enjoyment on their faces. That's how you know it's good to share the stage with the man, rest in peace Mr. Campbell.
