I was in Vietnam in 1969, as an American soldier, when Galveston started playing on the radio at our artillery base that was way out in the middle of nowhere near the Cambodian border. I was moved emotionally as if that song was written just for me.

Glen Campbell. This guy wasn't just a double threat. He was a triple threat. He could play guitar better than anyone, could sing just as good as the very best AND he could act. He was John Wayne's Costar in True Grit for one and he did a very good job as an actor. His life must have been incredible. Can you imagine playing guitar on the Beach Boys albums and countless others as a studio musician and meeting them all? Can you imagine meeting all of the Music greats that he has ? Having his own TV show ? Meeting and working with John Wayne ? Extraordinary isn't a good enough word. When you look up the word talent in the dictionary there should be a picture of Glen Campbell and nothing else.

Okay, I play and sing for seniors. Most of what I do, I love myself. But Galveston is one that is often requested. So I added it to my list. I sing a lot of classic country, because it’s loved by many, even younger crowds. But my wife always reminds me to change it up depending on the age of the crowd. I say the best I can do is 90’s country. I have no desire to do anything new. But I read comments from people all the time that helps me pick songs to do. I see millions of views on these classics. I tell my wife, but she doesn’t listen. Guess what, I’m leaving for an hour show in 15 minutes. And Galveston will be sung this afternoon.

I had a dozen much older male cousins who were all drafted and when they came to our home when they were all on leave they asked my parents not to let me play the album because of this song, beautiful though it was. I was pissed right off but 50 years later I DO understand. They were all afraid of what they had to face. 2 Of the dozen died in VN but the rest came home haunted. My Dad who was a very nearly killed veteran of WWII, (front line overrun, Battle of the Bulge) held on to that album when ever my cousins came to stay for several years after they all came home. I thank Heaven he did that, since it would really have caused unintentional hurt to those good men. They did as their country asked even though it was wrong.

Still get a little choked up watching this and seeing how much Glen just loved to perform! I remember all of his big hits and watching his TV show as a kid. Never knew how good he was at the time. Then I asked a guitar player/teacher friend of mine who his favorite guitar player was, and thought he was kidding when he said “Glen Campbell”. Well, I learned something that day.

THE MOST INSANE COMBINATION OF MUSICAL GIFTS THE HUMAN MIND COULD POSSIBLY ENVISION. OR GOD COULD CREATE!!! No Singer/Musician could do the things Glen Campbell was born to do. That wonderful, high pitched Falsetto voice. Perfectly in place with every note of music. Whether the song was Bullet fast or Maple Syrup slow, it was flawlessly performed. Not only that, many consider him the greatest Guitar Player that ever lived. Or any other instrument he tried. Until I saw his Classic Sioux Falls Concert on You Tube, I didn't realize he played Bagpipes. There he was, singing Amazing Grace and playing the Pipes like a Scottish Highlander!! A musical freak of nature, blessed by a higher force. In those two aspects, the Country Boy from Arkansas was unapproached. A once in a Century talent.

Wow. - your response tugs my heart strings - thank you for sharing. Though I was very young during the Vietnam War I was sadly touched very. personally by a casualty. My favorite first cousin who was more like a big brother to me and all of our cousins was killed by friendly fire by a young 18 year old soldier who had just arrived to his barracks - he was cleaning out his bayonet and it discharged and shot Ronnie killing him instantly he was on the lower bunk Ronnie was on the upper bunk from what I remember about the sad details but it was devastating to say the least to everyone particularly the young soldier who was just a kid and it was just an accident. Ronnie was a leader a paratrooper/Green Beret on his fourth tour of duty- his wife was 8 months pregnant with their first child. My father was Ronnie’s favorite uncle - much like a second father to him. Text chain letters almost weekly or as often as they could my dad actually got him a job at the consumer electronics company where he was a manager but he was treated so horribly that he went back as well as I guess or I’m sure wanting to do more for his country. My father received what was the last letter two days after we received the news by and knock on the door of our home that Ronnie was dead. The letter stated that he had just narrowly escaped several land mines - two of his but he didn’t make it he was devastated but he also was always positive about why he was there. I’ll never forget the knock on the door they came to our house because Ronnie and his young life stayed with us before he left because their house was not completed and we had plenty of room in ours so they had our address and his home address. It’s the first time I remember hearing my mother who is in her early 30s scream and cry Ronnie was her oldest brothers only son. Our entire family adored him. I was 6 years old. I cannot listen to this song without tears.

He had been staying at my parents house prior to deployment as he was super close to my mom and dad and he and his wife were remodeling their little house. . His wife was pregnant with their first child. -even though I was young I’ll never forget that knock on our door the day they told us he was dead it devastated and changed my family’s life that’s for sure- as it did for so many of the families who lost young men and women who were just kids serving in that war. He never got to see /meet his daughter but three days after his death my father received a letter from him as they corresponded throughout this time there - and his wife received a beautiful package of silk material for her to make a dress for the baby should it be a little girl or something for herself- along with a love letter, of course to her and their unborn child. I can’t listen to the song without tears. But my goodness what a handsome man and beyond adequate words talented guitarist and musician/ entertainer. I think he needs to be up with the guitar gods. Look at Gentle on My Mind and watch him go. Totally underrated. Such a beautiful voice and wonderful music. Thank you Glen for being a part of my musical history. You will always live on in our hearts.
