I got the chance to interview him not long before he died while he was setting his Rite of Sprng on a local company. I also learned you can actually see him dance in the early 60s TV production of Amahl and the Night Visitors (with Melissa Hayden and Nicholas Magallenes)! Definitely a career high point! He was gracious and very easy to talk to (and it didn't hurt that I was familiar with his work!) Still looking for a full version of Sphinx...
I wish I could see the entire “Pierrot Lunaire” with _ANYBODY_ dancing the title role, but I haven’t been successful. I absolutely love the fragment I’ve seen with Nureyev, but it’s just not enough, I suppose because the poetry is so compelling with Schoenberg’s music….it’s so unique of vision from poet, composer, and choreographer.
A great choreographer and artist with a unique poetic vision of movement. I've always enjoyed dancing in his ballets. My only regret is that I've never worked with him on one of his pieces. I'm happy to say that I have spoken to him briefly on a couple of occasions, once at party in London and when I bumped into to him in the street after performing in westend musical. I found him to be a warm and dignified individual.
