Chris Sutton and Glenn Hoddle explain his omission from the England squad and his rejection to play for England B. Subscribe: bit.ly/17YTeL5 Twitter: / btsport Facebook: / btsport Instagram: / btsport Website: sport.bt.com
Shearer, Wright, Ferdinand, Sheringham, Cole, Fowler and Collymore were all ahead of Sutton in that era. That was the strongest era I can remember for England strikers.
Ian Wright only made sporadic appearances for England, was never given a consistent run. I'm sure he would have scored more goals for England. But Shearer, younger and more prolific at the time, was given the nod, and rightly so. Wrighty should definitely be ahead of Sutton, especially with the latter's rotten big time charlie attitude.
Brain Donor to be fair though his partnership with shearer had they been able to replicate that for England they may have gone on to actually win something Sutton was a great striker no one can deny that
He left gazza out because he was a piss head just like he didn't pick Beckham and after pressure from the press he played Beckham against Argentina and look what happened
Gazza was drunk at the meeting with Glenn when he was told he was out. He'd been on the beer on the golf course. Described perfectly in Tony Adams' book
@@ivanc9149 Striking options were endless, unfortunately options elsewhere were not quite as endless. If you'd listed all those options on the back of a stamp there'd still have been an end point.
He played centre back in his early days at Norwich. He also filled in there for Celtic later in his career. But obviously made his name as a centre forward
I loved watching that great SAS partnership especially in that famous title winning year/season by Blackburn speaking as a Utd fan it was amazing to watch:)
I honestly believe that Glen Hoddle was the best England manager and should not have been sacked. A fine, community service and suspension would have been enough. I really enjoyed the creative style, the team setup and tactics of Hoddle. He only managed England for three years but if he had not been sacked England Golden Generation would have won World Cup and Euro Championship.
Takes a big man to be openly humble like he is here and own up to his mistakes especially with Glen sat next to him. He's clearly embarrassed by his own actions. Changed my view on him.
There's a lot of people on here that like to say negative stuff about Sutton, even if he's honest and humble. Sutton was a great player at Blackburn and he was an awesome centre forward. Sutton has my respect.
To be fair at the time Chris Sutton was a very good striker. He's unfortunate that we had a fantastic amount of quality strikers to choose from. I think he and Glenn Hoddle come across very well in this
Hoddle cut Ray Parlour from the squad for having a joke with his (GH’s) faith healer.... Parlour had won arsenal player of the year, in a double winning side.
Tbf we are talking about hoddle the guy who said handicapped people were being punished for something in a previous life. Who is the real bellend here? Players are spoiled we know that hoddle couldn't take it his time in the limelight as a player was over, such vanity remember him and waddle totps? 😣
Hoddle played for England but I always felt he was just a club player, at best he only ever played for 20/30 mins in most games the rest of the time he was a passenger. As a manager, we'll the least said the better. Sick note was only chosen because of the spurs connection, Rob Lee was as good as Palour so they would have made a more logical choice if your out to win things. It's a bit like Fowler and Owen both Liverpool but Fowler by far the better finisher, but England got caught up in the, well Owen's so fast, no disputing that but also injury prone and playing while injured for seven robbing erikson cost him the rest of his career, he was ever the same once his speed had gone. So many muppets and yes men in charge of England over the years and an interfering FA didn't help.
They both make good points about that time. I respect and like both men. I think it's to Sutton's credit that he talks so candidly about himself! Good interview and two top guys in Messrs Sutton and Hoddle!
Great chat. Chris Sutton was a great player and he did make a silly mistake. It's a shame he never got more caps later in his career, especially during his time at Celtic. But we live and learn. 👍⚽❤
Greig Stott he was below average in my opinion. That’s why he played for Celtic. Any player can look good playing for Celtic in that league. Just look at Scott Sinclair.
@@markstrugnellChris Sutton scored for Celtic against Ajax, juventus, Barcelona, Lyon and Stuttgart. He helped Celtic get to the 2003 uefa cup final and Henrik Larsson played his best football with Sutton beside him. The Celtic team Sutton played for knocked teams like Ajax, Liverpool and Barcelona out of Europe.
At the time Englands striking options were amazing! However when Eriksson was in charge he should have been given more of a chance especially as he picked some Turkeys like Vassell, Beattie & Ricketts.
Cockoff Gewgle I know what your saying but a good attitude didn’t matter for some of the best players maradonna, cantona and gasgoigne etc talent usually wins out
Sutton didn't have that much talent. Consider how egotistical and hard to deal with most players must be. Think how much of a dream it must be when one comes along who is hard working and humble. That's why Pedros and Welbecks exist.
Cockoff Gewgle Cockoff Gewgle he was a record English transfer fee, joint top goal scorer in the premier league, won premier league, spl numerous times and could play Center forward or defensively consider how egotistical one moment in his career was every player can make a mistake Roy Keane flew home from a World Cup while captain not like Sutton’s alone in making a poor decision
Ha ha, Parlour was bang average made to look better in a great Arsenal team. He was basically a non stop runner and told to give the ball to the quality foreigner as soon as possible!!
Although Sutton acted like a right co*k its good in a way to see how desperate a player back in the day wanted to turn out for an England A team. If a few of today's players were that desperate to play and perform in an England shirt we might just do as well as Hoddle's squad did back then at the world cup.
what they leave out of the discussion, is that Le Tissier played in that England B game, scored a hat trick and still didn't make the squad, so what was the point of it? I am no fan of Sutton but he was right in a way not to bother with the game.
Sutton was never gonna break through ahead of the other England strikers of that time. He was good, but he was way down the pecking order in the eyes of almost everyone at the time. ...outside of Blackburn.
Shearer, Sheringham, Fowler, Owen, Wright, Le Tissier, Les Ferdinand, Collymore even Dion Dublin who was joint top scorer 97/98. All the above where miles in front of Sutton for England. A good player by all means but most of the above are legends for clubs and country.
vhprecords - because as hoddle said, he needed six touches to get it under control. Wasn't good enough for the top top level. The majority of players would have scored by the busload playing in the united team of the 90s
Sutton was fantastic that season for Blackburn. 18 league goals. Had that Sheringham ability as well to pick out other players. Him and shearer would have gotten us to a semi final. Though les Ferdinand Sheringham Owen Fowler collymoore Cole shearer le tissier were great options
The fact that England B hasn't seen the light of day for 15 years is because it was a stupid idea and a huge waste of time. Sutton was probably right to turn it down, but he should have retired from international football instead of turning down the opportunity.
Sutton was right Glenn was unsincere, because he made Le Tissier play in a England B game against Russia I think it was before the 98 world cup,man scores four goals wins the game but still doesn't get to go to the world cup so I don't think Sutton was ever in with a chance.
As a player Hoddle was the best midfielder I ever saw. Majestic, two footed. He made the game look easy. What a footballer he was. But I agree with Lincoln D. His man management skills were very poor.
it was because there was no VAR. i swear the referee and linesmen have been paid up. at the tip of my fingers I can recall 3 or 4 major events where England were wrongly adjudged - though one was probably not that wrong - the Beckham red card was probably $$$ paid to ref
I never liked Sutton as a player but as a Pundit as mentioned, he comes across well. Was honest about his mistake. Hoddle should have said there, yep, I stood by my decision then that he or any player that did that to him would never play for England again! :-)
Thing is with Sutton, his best work was done as a foil for the main striker (Shearer or Larsson). He wasn’t in competition with Wright, Cole, Fowler etc but more in the Sheringham role. He was young, brash and had confidence in himself that spilled over. Takes a man to admit he was wrong.
In fairness to Sutton, I don't think it was so much that he thought that he was too good for England B and just that if he couldn't be part of the senior squad then that was it.
Even if Chris didn’t do that, he would still only be looking at sub appearances as it was always Shearer + 1, then Owen + 1. Also, when he went to Celtic, he never started more than 20 games a season as a striker
To be fair to Chris I sort of want players to be angry that they’re left out. Surely Glenn owed him an explanation? England B doesn’t even exist anymore and I wager that most of today’s top players wouldn’t play for them either.
I think Chris has said it right now.He shouldn't have done it when there were so many good options he should be able to work out why he wasn't picked. If he had played the last 10 games and then been dropped he might expect an explanation but not after 1
In general, this presenter has an overrated opinion of himself and it cut him down to size when he longer was formula one presenter. I saw him insult an actor and look down his nose at him. Who is he though? Boring and could be replaced by anyone. Zero personality.
What's more, he's talking rubbish here (unless it's intended sarcastically) when he tries to back up Sutton by saying that Chris is usually sensible. Sutton is precisely not that with his unwitty and provocative/ trolling statements. The loudness of his opinions are inversely related to his footballing ability (or lack thereof), perhaps.
It's all a matter of opinion. Many people believe players like Kevin Phillips, David Hirst, Matthew le tissier, Dallian Atkinson, Darren Huckerby didn't get the opportunity they deserved... At their best the statistics was through the roof. Who was around that period when the players mentioned was playing. And to be honest there was probably better players out there than there was playing for England. The manager's just go for the system and what they believe.
And to think if sutton had of been judged on his performances for Chelsea before the Cameroon squad was announced he wouldn't of even got a single cap what was it 1 goal in an entire season 🤣 he had such amazing talent infront of him and massive fight on his hands to even make the squad never mind start a game! For England ffs
Gascoigne was the greatest British player since Best and couldn't get an England game. Sutton couldn't have laced either's boots. Le Tissier was unique, Sutton was a legend in his own lunchtime.
