Being An Anomaly I am very much aware of the fact she is 'in character'. But I meant her acting on stage in general. I don't like her general overacting. She has a nice voice, but I can't watch her perfomances.
As Diana said once, 'when you have your cadenza you are free and you can do what you want if it is in style'. The high G is just lovely. Why shouldn't she sing it?
I m a more Dessay style of person, but i know that Damrau is one of the most briliant and talented opera singers we have and and we really need her in the opera! I don't know why but for me Dessay and Damrau are the new (lighter ofcourse) Callas and Sutherland.
I'd kill to see someone like Damrau live in an opera! It's almost like she's incapable of making mistakes or singing ugly notes. And on top of that she's also great at acting :D.
This is hands down the quintessential version of this song. Shes not only stunning vocally but she ACTS which is unheard of in the opera world. Notice the way she acts her way through the moments shes not singing. This is brilliant!
People below make unwarrented comments on her acting. This is a concert performance not a staged play. She captures perfectly the conflict of Cunegonde who is tempted to give up her true self for the venal temptaions of wealth and fame. What more can we ask than this conflict be presented in the performance which Damrau does .
Her technique is absolutley FANTASTIC! Perhaps not so big as to be a true dramatic coloratura, but what a lush and sexy voice. I'm completely floored! You could likley hear those high notes over any orchestra.
This is absolutely the best the world has to offer in this voice type! Technically impeccable, oozing with fun and charm and such an amazing sound! Brava!!!
um, I totally believe her. She is the first person I've heard sing this song where what she is feeling actually crafts the sound (ie. the laughter on "ah ha!"). She is amazing in this performance... lots of fire, fun, her character actually comes to life instead of just standing there trying to make pretty sounds come out of her mouth.
Thank you for putting this up! This is the best clip I've seen this year... Diana Damrau is fantastic, not only does she sing like a godess, but she can act as well.
I'm just impressed... I think she's the best coloratura soprano of our days, but it's not only her voice and range, its her acting, so full of energy, she seems to be so confortable that her singing appears to be easy. Definately, my fav opera singer... in all senses.
I never would have searched this up if it hadn't been recommended for me. Acting with that much expression while hitting those kinds of notes? That was insane
Wow, I'm not going to pretend to know much about opera, but this is my favorite version of this I've seen on youtube [The first I saw was Kristins, I'm a huge fan of hers so I clicked the link]. I found most of the other preformances to be boring and unispired- this one is lovely! It's funny, and she doesn't overdo it like Kristin does, although I know she does that on purpose. Diana Damrau is so talented!
An even better version of this with Diana is this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oByViX0t-IE.html The orchestra is more consistent. It seems in this one (the one I'm currently commenting on) Diana is waiting for the orchestra to catch up in certain phrases.
The original person to sing this song professionally was Barbara Cook in 1956 in the original Broadway cast of "Candide." Cook was the orignal Cunegonde (the character that sings this song) on Broadway.
Chenoweth is fantastic. She certainly was more entertaining than Damrau. However, I will say that her voice pales in comparison to Damrau's. This performance was amazing at the musical level, while Chenoweth's was amazing in the performance aspect of it.
Chris R. chenoweth isn’t just a comedian with an ok voice. she’s an actress who handles drama INCREDIBLY well, and can sing the house down. i turned this woman’s off very quickly. this is not her song. she’s incredibly talented but i couldn’t deal with her doing this unintelligible song that’s just her showing off that she can hit high notes. we already know that cuz we’ve all seen her in magic flute
I love -love- her laugh at 2:45... just amazing voice control. Of the entire song, that's the part that gets me the most! She's just incredible. (She's also absolutely beautiful.. still amazes me to this day after my original introduction to her- years ago- as the Queen of the Night!)
Diana Damrau is beyond reproach. Period. Amazing! People, stop being critical to try and prove how many words you know. None of us can do what she is doing. I love the high F at 5:16 and that she ends an exhausting 7-min piece by tossing off a high A-flat!!! Genius.
esta version es espectacular y me quedo definitivamente con esta...esa libertad vocal de diana te atrapa pues resulta tan natural que captas todo lo que siente, excelente, kristin nunca podra superarla, la violencia de su interpretacion es lo mejor.
