EDITA GRUBEROVA singing Cunegonde's aria "Glitter and be gay" from Leonard Bernstein's opera Candide, conducted by Peter Valentovic, recorded in Prague on 28 June 2016
This is an example how a voice can be when you take care about it! Young singes have to recognize this. Gruberova is one of the greatest opera singers of our age and I’m happy that I heard her many times from 1977 until today. And to criticize her for a funny encore after a concert is not really fair!
I can't believe some numbskull booed her. I mean really, you buy a ticket to hear a legendary coloratura sing a difficult aria at bleeping /70/... you are grabbing the last chance to experience a singer whose art will imminently exist only on recordings, and you judge her negatively, let alone BOO her?! For one thing, they should have miked her and not just the orchestra. But what was good in this performance was spectacular, and I for one am grateful that I had a chance to listen. Bravissima!
I judge every performance on its own merit. I don't care who the artist is. This one was not good. Superstars have been booed at La Scala, because it was deserved. Singers have to know when to retire. Ms Gruberova's body of work is undeniably stupendous, but this is not the way to end it.
@@musiktranen Being 70 doesn't give anyone the right to charge admission for really bad singing. She has lost her middle and low notes and shouts the upper ones. She continued way too long and her last several years were not complimentary to a really great career. She should have stopped 10 years before she did. We would have remembered her better.
