With the world population hitting 8 billion and globalization becoming more prevalent than ever, how are we approaching diversity, inclusion, and belonging? There has been much discussion about how to best create an all-embracing environment for foreigners in the United States. However, there has been less discussion about how American expatriates can best adapt to a foreign culture. The United States population only accounts for 4 percent of the global population, so there ought to be attractive opportunities outside the States that motivate Americans to relocate. How do American expatriates feel when they now become the minority? More importantly, how should they assimilate? What if both discussions are two sides of the same coin - a worldview? Global citizenship is when a person's identity transcends political and geographical borders, embracing humanity as a broader class. Being a global citizen is to be at home in any nation. The more global citizens we have, the better the world becomes. When we segment the world by political and geographical borders, race and ethnicity, culture, and stages of economic development, we allow for competition, pettiness, and discrimination to creep in. Viewing ourselves as humans will enable us to see similarities in people instead of differences. Global citizens no longer separate themselves by race or class. As a result, global citizens can better connect with others, think for the common good, and build a better society. Everyone has the capability to become a global citizen, and more people need to know about global citizenship. My name is Tuan, but you can call me Jim. I'm a senior majoring in international business at BGSU with a GPA of 4.0. I strive not only for academic excellence but also to excel at work and life. I'm a conscientious team player with a passion for new experiences and a mission to foster diversity. While holding leadership positions in 4 student organizations - including vice president of the Vietnam Student Association, liaison chair of DACODI, and student ambassador, I've worked for 6 companies in different industries and countries. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
