GLOCK 17: 115gr vs 124gr vs 135gr vs 147gr

A completely unscientific and quick test to see if my new Glock 17 Gen 3 favored any particular bullet weight(s) as far as accuracy is concerned. Looks like the 124gr and 115gr bullet weights have a slight edge over the 135gr and 147gr loads. Discounting the flyer in the 115 gr group, the 115 gr group was the tightest. Next best was difficult to ascertain between the 124 and 147 gr groups. 135 gr the widest, but not by much. A true test would have to incorporate the gun fired from a rest and multiple types of ammo from each bullet weight category.

Seems you got better as you went along, would be good to try the same drill with each weight in reverse to see if the groupings are similar.

Good show, I'm always spreading the different grains of bullets in IDPA: 115 gr., 124., and 147gr. And always come back to 115 gr. for my Glock 34 gen 4, where the tightest groups are made. Thank you for your effort and demonstration.

147 was the best grouping, he was just high and left. Were these jacketed hollow points or fmj? Makes a huge difference.

Don't you love all the critique?? "what distance?, the target is moving, it's not scientific." I'm just glad you posted it.

Driver Johns I haven’t read the comments but the test is absolutely worthless. The type of projectile (hollow point, ball, flat) the powder charge, and type of firearm are key in an evaluation such as this. I will say that the video is great in that it’s to the point and no fluff. Even if a generic test it would be nice to know which ammunition, firearm and range in which they are tested. Squirrels are gonna be squirrelly I guess..

Position of the target may have had some effect. Notice the upper left target all shots were high left. Lower left target 4 of the 5 shots were low left. A still unscientific but better approach might be to shoot one target with a bulls eye in the middle using a different target for each 5 shot group. Also be sure all 4 tests use the same brand of ammo.

That's really interesting. Was the barrel cold on the first set of shots (upper left) Thanks for posting this. Just starting to study the dynamics of variable ammo weights

I think the heavier loads work better in very small guns with short barrels but I like the 115 gr because it’s cheaper and easier to get. It looks to me like it shoots better out of your Glock too. Great vid!

I wonder which one had the best recoil for facilitating a follow-up shot?
@johnzarollin2749
@johnzarollin2749 3 года назад
Appears all 4 projectile weights yield equal fatal body cavity performance, i.e., tight grouping. From a self-defense perspective, the stopping power and how felt recoil affects target reacclimation would be metrics to consider..

Thank you for posting this review! I've just started seriously looking into to this matter. So far, the 115 and 124 appear to be about the same in terms of grouping.

From a point of view of a re-loader, unless you're using identical powder, primers, bullet manufacturer and grain weight, you would need several more tests. Even factory ammo does not have the same grain powder from cartridge to cartridge. Then, it also depends on what grain round was use at the factory to sight in the gun IF it was. Also, IF you sight in for 115g FMJ RN, then other weights could be different. I've found that hollow points fly worse then round nose and what good is carrying HP's if they're going to fly off target?

I mainly go with 124 +p but, I'm going to try some of those 115's in the near future. Never like any heavier than those two weights.

Good vid.I made a video the other day shooting some bulk federal 115 grn FMJ's.And some Winchester 124 grn. Nato FMJ's @100 Yards on a Large man sized target.The 124 NATO round very noticeably out preformed the Federal 115's.The nato round is said to be near +P preasure.I dont know what the deal was but there are pistols that like Particular loads better than others.I have always heard that that the Glock 17 liked the 124's better than the 115's.One again great vid.

im gonna guess 124gr is going to be the most consistently accurate, the spacing between shots in the lower left is fairly tight, which is hardest for a right handed shooter

obviously shooting the lower right quadrant target is easiest with most right handed shooter... To be fair without bias or any advantage the test should of been done with individual targets and not with targets divided in quadrant.

Heavier bullets tend to group higher, because they are leaving the muzzle a split second later, than the lighter bullets. In other words... The muzzle has rose a little bit higher from recoil, by the time that the heavy bullet has left for the target. You're welcome.

I shot the 115 grain much better than the 124 grain.... The 124 grain I shot went low and I put the 115 grain shots in bulls eye aiming both at center....

@avgguy47
@avgguy47 9 лет назад
+iwwqytv Actually, as its only 9mm, I really didn't notice any significant difference. Got it so other family members could become more proficient with it. In addition to the Lonewolf barrel being ported, it is supposed to be of match grade. Not one of my better days shooting (I could be totally lame and make half a dozen excuses, but thats not me). However, I have had better days with it, as evidenced by my most recent video where I take the G17 out to the range with my Springfield XDM 5.25 .45 ACP.

Ok got it. I wish someone with a ransom rest would do a I vid like this. I'd be really curious to see the results.
@avgguy47
@avgguy47 9 лет назад
SouthTexas Mike I agree it would be an excellent test to conduct. However, in addition to the ransom rest, the test would have to consist of multiple types of ammo in the various weights. In other words, it could get expensive and time consuming. Thanks for your comments!

147 g is a poor choice in the Glock 17. Because of the longer 4.5" barrel,than 9mm standard(4") heavy bullets will be less accurate and 115g bullets will be the most accurate . 124g will be close with this being the best choice weight for the Glock 19 and most pistols having a standard 9mm 4 inch barrel length. I have a S&W M&P Shield 9mm and with it's 3.1" barrel, heavy bullets like the 147g Speer Gold Dot and Federal HST 150 g will perform best. As a general rule ,specifically with 9 mm, with a short barrel heavy bullets are best. With a standard 9mm barrel about 4",124 -135 g bullets will perform best, although accuracy will be quite acceptable with 115 g bullets as well. With longer than standard 9mm barrels over 4", 115 g bullets will perform best with 124g bullets being acceptable.

@Harry Peterson I was specifically referring to 9mm only, not any other calibers. Based upon tests here on RU-vid on the weapon I carry S&W MP 9 Shield and the weapon I have for home defense Glock 17 , and testing of different ammunition personally through each gun. While results can vary slightly with different weapons in 9mm,my assertion generally holds true overall for this caliber.
@ericr530
@ericr530 4 года назад
@Harry Peterson Yes amoung penetration tests in various materials as well, water jugs, magazines, wood etc. Light weight bullets 115g, tend to be more accurate as far as groupings from the Glock, while heavier bullets 147 g, tend to be more accurate from the MP 9s short 3.1" barrel.

@Harry Peterson Very true. About 15-20 feet. Speer Gold Dot 115g , Hornady Critical Defense, and Federal Hydro-Shock all great rounds. The Speer is my favorite.

@Harry Peterson My wife and I along with my college stepson live in a townhouse with neighbors in close proximity. My first line of defense is a 18" Remington 12g 870 police that is in the closet in my wife and my bedroom. I use Remington Express Long Range "high brass" #2 shot which is less penetrative than buck shot and absolutely devestating at close ranges even through a variety of soft and hard materials. The Glock is in a bedside table on my side within arms reach

@Harry Peterson I've been shooting shotguns for over 35 years, lots of "mythology" about the effectiveness of shotguns. #2 shot is pretty large, I wouldn't use anything smaller than #4 though
