Gloria Swanson made this rare TV interview appearance in 1979, chatting with actors Ted Knight, Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy and Charles Frank, and rodeo star Larry Mahan.
She is in another video talking about food. I think it was 1977.I have never seen these videos til YT came along. But i have always talked about food to family and friends when they would mention it.
Gloria is the only one who doesn't seem dated. She is so real and authentic. Reminding the men of her age, and her grandchildren. She was the real deal.
When Gloria mentions that she would let Merv in on a lot of secrets in about a year, she was referring to her autobiography, SWANSON ON SWANSON, which would be published in 1980. I met her walking with her daughter that spring in Central Park, and we sat on a bench and had a nice conversation. What a lady!
Themanwhocameback2 Lucky man!!! My friend met Mae West by chance , on the streets of NYC. They kept in touch , until her death. Now if you see an actor on the streets of NYC , they are buying drugs or looking for hookers. LOL/JK
It is amazing how Gloria Swanson was always light years ahead of her time in everything! In 1979 she was already talking about the importance of eating healthy foods. Now we are in 2016 and most people still do not believe that.
Gloria Swanson's award-winning performance in Sunset Boulevard is arguably the greatest screen performance by a leading lady in the history of Hollywood cinema.
What an authentic interview! Interviews should always be like that... natural. Nowadays, the interviewers want all the attention to them and complete ignore the guest. Great interview, that showed a lot of respect and admiration toward Gloria Swanson, the way she surely deserved.
Ol' Merv was having quite a time during "I'm gonna wash that man right out of my hair!" Gloria was unspeakably elegant and gracious. Not only did she preserve her figure (at a time when younger stars than her were dying off in droves), but she kept her MIND. She was a very thoughtful sort of person. Got into the heart of things.
Gloria did do films after Sunset Blvd. How about "Three For Bedroom C" which she did right after Sunset Blvd. In another interview, Miss Swanson did say she was swamped with movie offers after Sunset Blvd. but she rejected all of them because they were all inferior rehashes of Sunset Blvd.
I have always considered Ms. Swanson as one of Hollywood's great beauties, with a wealth of talent and wisdom, lovely sense of humour, with the perfect mix of humility and grace. Pure class...Thank you so much for the upload 💝💝💝💝💝
Merv gave her the intro she deserves, Dick Cavett treated her like another guest, just into reading Swanson on Swanson, an autobiography, simply fascinating! not only about Gloria but of Hollywood in its heyday,
A icon does not even sound right, don't you see that ? Didn't they teach you in grade school that the way you know when to use " an " is when the next word in your sentance starts with the letters a e i o u and sometimes y ..
Such a great clip, thank you for posting it. I do love seeing Gloria Swanson, amazing interview but love seeing Ted Knight as well. I'm a big fan of his and its very hard to find any interviews with him from his time on the 70's talk show circuit. He made a lot of those "variety show" appearances that were popular back in the day, which are for some reason, much easier to come by than any of his talk show appearances. Thanks again, great stuff!
I adore Gloria Swanson - what a lady! I remember reading her book when I was a teenager. She talked about how she kept healthy. It was very interesting and before its time. Her movie, "The Trespasser," is one of my favourites.
This is how I remember Gloria Swanson and her crusade against Processed foods. 40 years later it's still a major issue. * Also the actor that she was talking about who went into interior design was William Haines. Basically he was let go by MGM when sound came in because he was an open gay man. They needed to dump him.
@@TheMediaDirectory Louis B. Mayer ordered Billy to dump his boyfriend, Jimmie Shields, and marry a woman. Billy Haines refused, and pretty much told Mayer to go fuck himself, so Mayer fired him. But looking good and living well is the best revenge. Billy went on to become the most celebrated interior designer in Hollywood with such prestigious clients as his good friend, Joan Crawford, Jack Warner, Carole Lombard and many, many others. He and Jimmy remained together until Billy's death in 1973.
There was more to it than that. William Haines had a furious falling out with Louis B. Mayer in his office and walked out. From I read, Mr. Mayer was furious with William Haines. Mr. Mayer wanted Mr. Haines to parade as a heterosexual and give up his lover JImmy Shields. Mr. Haines responded by asking Mr. Mayer to give up his wife as an even exchange.
amphetamean-queen Merv Griffen. He had this talk show for many years and had wonderful guests...a lot of them were older actors who were fascinating. Among the guests were Tallulah Bankhead and Hermione Gingold.
To answer a long-ago asked question about the bleeping of the word "March," it was due to the fact that syndicated talk shows in those days might have aired many weeks or months after taping. The recorded shows were distributed by courier or air freight, and shown when local stations got them. They tried to keep how long ago a show was recorded a secret, but guests often slipped up and let the cat out of the bag.
I noticed something about these old-time celebrities they were grateful that their dreams came true they didn't complain about their success like today's celebrities do they want our money and for us to feel sorry for them and they wannabe worshipped like gods and treat you like a peasant😆
+519DJW The show was taped a week or two earlier and aired in different cities on different dates. The "Merv" show always deleted specific date for that reason so it would appear to be "live".
Merv should have given a not do Sunset Blvd and introduced her: "Here is Gloria Swanson. She used to be big." Anyone recall what she would have said then, to bring the house down?
My, how times have changed! Those guest chairs were packed with stars! Gloria looked so beautiful for a woman of 79! She was way ahead of her time in eating healthy foods! Ted Knight did; as well but I don't think that he lived as long as Gloria! Good interviews! ⭐🎬⭐
Sunset Boulevard is one of my favorite movies. The only part that didn't work was Norma was supposed to be old and no longer beautiful. As brilliant an actor as she was, Ms. Swanson didn't do ugly.
He didn't mention it in this interview but Knight was initially diagnosed with cancer a few years earlier in 1977. It's probably a big reason his wife got him started on the healthy eating.
