Glory and the Grave | What Paths of Glory is Really About (Film Analysis)

Paths of Glory was the first masterpiece of Stanley Kubrick (The Killing is close). Based on Humphrey Cobb's novel, Kubrick's 1957 movie touches on a variety of wartime themes. In this analysis, I examine how Paths of Glory makes a statement against selfish ambition masked as patriotism and how Paris becomes an ideal for confronting the random suffering of life. Thanks for watching!

I always cry like a baby with the last scene with the German song. To this day, I never even knew why

Same here. I first saw it on the big screen and that scene totally caught me off guard. Genuinely moving. Says so much about war with a song and with faces.

Unfortunately the ones who want power are ones who should not have it. And those who should be in power don't want it and never pursue it. Letting the cowards and corrupt walk right in.
@anuszbizsergetokommentek2171
To be fair the greatest leaders of our history were just like Mirau. Alexander only stopped at india because he got sick and his men got tired, Caesar , Pompei, Augustus, Traianus only fought wars to grow their personal glory and Napoleon returned to france despite the fact that it was clearly impossible for him to retake the throne, risking lives for no reason. I remember a little story about Napoleon from my history book when I was in the 7th grade. Napoleon after his coronation allegedly asked one of his veterans the question: wasnt the coronation ceremony marvelous? And the veteran responded: it would have been even better if my comrades were still alive.

@@CptChandler it's admirable but right now. We need good people in all levels of government. Because these people determine everything. There's so much corruption because all positions are attracting lazy weaselly out of touch people. The world will only get worse if good people do nothing. Evil never stops itself.

This is what the losers have always told themselves throughout history lol. It's a very convenient thought for someone who finds themselves at the bottom of the food chain. "Those at the top shouldn't be there, and sad saps like me deserve it all!". Are the ambitious really cowards, though, if they were the ones with the will to act and not you? They were the ones with the will to take what they want out of this life, not you? They may be corrupt, but corruption is a feature not a bug; I'm sure the gazelle deems the lion "corrupt" right before being crushed between its jaws.

True story, that's why voting is always the lesser of two evils, sadly. But in knowing and accepting this, still better to engage and invest than check out and blow with the wind

Kubrick was truly a genius artist. The final scene is so unexpected and so moving. No dialogue or epilogue needed. All the performances are very good but something about Timothy Carey is fascinating to me. I understand he was a nightmare to work with though!

Thanks for catching an important detail I've missed until now. Dax unable to come to the rescue is an unanticipated punch in the gut. Kubrick would do this again in The Shining. The hero in this film (the only hope we think there is) is gone in moments. And this, as you point out, is very non-Hollywood.

Great analysis. One thing I wondered after watching the films and any other stories with a similar premise. You are sent to unjust death maybe you should take it with dignity buy why should you take it quietly? Maybe it is futile to fight it but why make it easy? Even if you can convince one person of the injustice of it , isn't it worth it? Edit: I know easier said than done but still if you could.

From Kirk Douglas' autobiography "The Ragman's Son":
I met the director, Stanley Kubrick. He said he had a script called PATHS OF GLORY. I read the script and fell in love with it. "Stanley, I don't think this picture will ever make a nickel, but we HAVE to make it."
I got financing. It wasn't easy. When I arrived in Munich, I was greeted with a completely rewritten script.
"Stanley, did you write this?"
"Yes."
"Stanley, why would you do that?"

He very calmly said, "To make it commercial. I want to make money."
I hit the ceiling. "You come to me with a script. I love THAT script. I got the money, based on THAT script. Not this shit!" I threw the script across the room. "We're going back to the original script, or we're not making the picture."

This is a bad take on Paths of Glory, quite possibly Kubrick’s best film. Don’t let David Simon ever see this video, he’s gonna destroy you and so I’ll leave it to chance whether or not that happens, but if it does you’ll inevitably have to “stand tall and take it like a man.” So empty…LOL

What's perhaps most appalling is that Paths of Glory is based on a true story: the Souain Corporals Affair. The general ordering artillery to shell his own trenches to force the men to attack, and the execution of four random men from a formation that refused to go over the top....actually happened in real life. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Souain_corporals_affair
