The Glowforge Aura Series Is It Worth It: Part 2.
Are you on the fence about buying the Glowforge Aura? Do you want honest feedback from someone who has purchased it? Have you found it difficult to find some answers without watching a long video? We are here for you. We bought it, but after several opinions, we tried to cancel the order but were too late. So we decided to use this Aura to help you find out all of the information, so you can make a more informed decision. What would you like to see or know? In this video, we will share our biggest disappointments with this machine.

We have new information! The Aura can cut some thick, medium, and light Proofgrade materials...follow us to find out which ones and why the Glowforge App gave us those errors!

Like you, I rushed to buy the Glowforge Aura because the price would go up within hours. But after watching RU-vidrs who were disappointed at not being able to cut clear acrylic I contacted the company and set about returning my unopened boxed Aura. They suggested an upgrade to a Pro at a very good price. My unopened box sits near me and I hesitated because what will happen if I'm disappointed! I'm so happy you now know why the Glowforge app gave you errors. What a relief!

I purchased the Pro as an upgrade and paid a reduced price and received a refund on my Aura. My family is anxious for us to begin using it. @@Flemingoriginals007

Our pleasure. We did find out it could cut more things, but they were not in the Glowforge software for quite awhile after it came out. You may want to check out the We Were Wrong video. We hope it helps! Thank you for your comment!

Our pleasure! No, it is absolutely not you. If you haven't already, there is a video with a hack in part 3, and then in part 4, why some of the proofgrade materials despite being compatible with the Aura. I think you are going to be relieved when you hear it. Have a wonderful day! 😃

Thank you for posting this! I was actually about to buy one and it IS a dealbreaker to learn that it won't cut 1/8" acrylics. I mainly cut acrylic so it would have been useless for me if I'd bought it. I guess I'll keep using the glowforge pro at my library!

The good news is that it can. The problem was that Glowforge had not created the settings yet. Please watch the “We Were Wrong” video. It cannot cut clear, white, blue translucent, or mirrored, but it can cut other solid colors. I hope this is helpful! Thank you for your comment!

Someone posted on community that if you paint the paper black on white or clear it will cut it! I haven’t tried it! Was curious myself.

@mtredeker7294 We have not been able to get that to work. It just melted. We were hoping it would work though. We even tried painting the acrylic black on all sides.

I’m still learning about lasers. Does it only cuts its own brand materials? Like the ones that only have that QR code?

Thank you for the question. It can cut other materials. You do not have to purchase their brand with the QR code. You would just need to figure out the settings, make sure it is laser safe, and compatible with the Aura, which gets easier as we practice. We hope this helps. 😃

The good news is we discovered that the settings were not programmed when the Aura was released, but have since been updated. Even if the material says it's "not compatible", can you just cut it with manual settings? Or can you not manually set the speed and power on the Aura?

Yes, you can use the manual settings and set the speed, power, and passes. Also, they have updated the the software so the QR codes should work now. Thank you for your comment!

I just made a video about my experience cutting with the laser for the first time and shortly after I did mirrored acrylic... what a waste of material. I'm going to make videos of my experience learning how to do it too! so far not so good.

Can you manually tell it the materials/settings instead of relying on it scanning a code to tell you?

Hello, and thank you for your question. You can use manual settings for any material including Proofgrade materials… Just be sure to set the focus before positioning your project and clicking print. Interestingly, if it is not Proofgrade material, the laser doesn’t even have a place to specify the materials, but you can name and save your custom settings once they are set. Let us know if that is clear or not. 😃

Hello, we have only tested a couple, but finding the correct settings has been tricky. We are trying to find a good answer for you. In the meantime, do you have a specific hardwood you hope to be able to use? Have a great day!

Thank you for your comment. We have found it can cut 3mm. It cannot cut clear, white, blue, translucent, or mirrored acrylic. It shouldn’t cut MDF/Draftboard…
