Glowforge Laser head tear down for cleaning

In this video I'll show you how to tear down glowforge laser head for cleaning. They are "sealed" but the small fan actually blows dirty air into the laser body to keep the dust from going right up to the lens. Sad thing is the dirty air does get into the laser body, and it fogs up the sensor lenses over time.
So in this video I show how to clean those un touchable areas enjoy and feel free to ask questions or if there are other Glowforge related videos you would like to see.

Somehow this got on my homepage. You're doing something right for the algorithm! (Used to be a laser cutter repair tech for FSLaser. This is a great video for this style of laser.)

Thanks for the compliment, I have been learning as I go. Glowforge doesn't offer any sort of repair assistance on the users end so trying to do what I can to help others out.

Will this help with the lens moving up and down? Mine stoped moving and I don’t hear the click sounds when I turn my machine on.

Excellent training video! Very delicate assembly. One thing that may be of interest is wearing an ESD strap and grounding it to the GF frame while handling the circuit board. I have had issues in the past where a static charge damaged a board and you can't tell visually at all. Just an observation. Thank you very much, and also, do you know of any diagnostics for troubleshooting that are available? I would like to be able to check sensors and turn on fans and motors through an I/O service interface. I don't do Facebook, but I have been looking on GF community forums for info, especially for errors like "Head not found", it's like trying to diagnose your "Check Engine" on your cars. Thanks again!

Sadly glowforge offers zero help for repair yourself people. The issues have had to be tested or part swapped to repair. They are great little lasers but the customer support on the repair side isn’t great. Or at least isn’t consistent across the board.

Thank you so much for the videos! I have used several to help me. along the way with my Glowforge. One thing I cannot figure out is where is the temp sensor in the Glowforge pro? my pro is 3 months old and unable these days. Non stop temp error saying it needs to cool down. I have cleaned and cleaned everything, watched your videos and done everything. I dont know where this stupid sensor is to make sure it's clean. the support at Glowforge is horrible. I wish I knew that before buying, I wouldn't ever recommend these to anyone because of the horrible support. They just keep giving the run around. I live in MN and its literally -18 degrees and inside the house its 65 degrees. Thank you again!

Hi so I’m not sure where the sensor is. I think it’s on the mother board, I have had these machines 100% apart and do not see an obvious sensor.

@@Cruizin542 thanks for the info! I did join that Facebook group and searched overheating. Lots said it was related to the small fan on the laser head. I took it apart and really cleaning it. I’m gonna try cutting again. Appreciate the help today a lot!

How about measuring out that gasket so a new one can be cut on the GF before pulling the head open.

My laser isn't cutting all the way through (but it's close) even on proofgrade material. I've noticed the focusing beam happens twice now (and seems slower than the usual quick flash). My gut is that the inside of the focus lens needs a clean. Does that sound right to you?

Would having ash or a foggy lens on the print head cause an orange light? I’m not sure where to go now. I get an orange light on start up, the head moves forward and to right about an inch each way and then I get the orange light. I’ve replaced the white lid ribbon, the black lid ribbon, the white printer head ribbon, the carriage tray, and the daughter board. If I place the printer head directly under the camera it either gets stuck center or homing and sometimes gives the error “head not found” other times it just sit there.
@Cruizin542
@Cruizin542 Год назад
No they wouldn’t cause it. Check the white ribbon cable thst connects to the laser head for any damage or black spots.

Hello, this video is super helpful. I followed your instructions but i used 91% isopropyl alcohol to clean the small fan blades and the board with a very soft brush. I put everything back together and when i am going to do a calibration I get the flashing yellow after I press the blue flashing button. The calibration cannot be started. I am stuck 😢. I checked everything again and putting back together. I double check the white printer cable and it is set properly. I also check the 4 pins and they are making a good connection. Did I messed up the board by using isopropyl alcohol to clean it? I mean it does not make sense. I let it dry out. I cannot use my machine now. 😢😢😢

I’ve been trying to find a laser tube replacement tutorial since that seems to be one of the parts that inevitably fails. The cost of shipping it from where I live to get it fix would cost more than getting a custom laser tube made here 😅 Just wanted to see if you’d ever do a tutorial

Hi, well thats a tricky one. Glowforge has no way to line up the laser without their logs and programing software tools. There is always a work around, but we are not confident enough to do a video. Not to mention have not had to replace a tube.

Eletronics cleaner and a very soft nylon brush. Don’t worry about getting is spotless, more damage has been done by people scrubbing them than anything.
