Thanks for showing how you used the 'form' the keep each of the strips in place whilst glueing. Other videos just used masking tape, but your method is much better for large tops. Your practical tips are very useful...
Wayne, I did as you said but my chest is 20.5 inches wide with a 6 inch lid height. When I laid my piesce on the form I noticed that the end boards actual were landing on the outside of the chest, oops. I subtracted the width of the chest sides, 3/4 on each side so subtracted 1 1/2 inches for a result of 19 inches. Having a hard time figuring formula for 19" wide, have to use fractions I believe, is this correct? Thanks
The glued up segments should go the full 20.5 " wide so it sets on top and not inside of the box sides. Then after gluing it together you can sand everything to fit. Note that you can glue an extra segment on each side to make sure that you are plenty wide. Also you might have better luck if you make your form wider than 20.5". I hope this helps.
Subtract the thickness of the wood you are going to use for the lid from the outside radius of the lid to find the form radius. In my case the outside radius was 10 in. and my lid was 3/4 in thick making the radius of the form 9 1/4 inches. Hope this helps
Good question; After I dry fit the segments on the form I take it apart and apply a generous coat of glue to each edge and put the segments back on the form before strapping the lid together.Sorry; I had to review my video to see what I said, since it was made several years ago.
@WhatsupWayneLWC No worries. Thanks for the clarification. I just didnt want to assume. That's what I figured. It made sense, but I haven't done a ton of wood gluing.
