I saw your original video on this and it changed my peely, dry-lipped life! No matter what I do, no matter how much lip balm I use, they end up overly dry and crusty ever other week it seems. This has been a lifesaver! 💜
@@silviamoreira6171 you don't really need to buy those expensive serum for your lips as well , boroline is good enough and cheap and effective. You can also use it for cuts and burns as it is antiseptic as well.
If you have sensitive skin, wash off the glycolic acid after ten minutes! Or 20 minutes, tops. Then make sure to apply something thick like she said. And don't repeat the process daily. I do it and it works very well, but only when I really need it - so maybe 2-3 times per winter. If you keep getting super dry lips, you may be licking them, or you may be sensitive/allergic to an ingredient in a lip product.
I use a hypoallergenic one. My current one is only medium-thick, but very affordable. The brand is Everyone. Sometimes I use an oil: coconut or cottonseed. They are both anti-inflammatory. If you want to use something that is very thick overnight, then IMO good gentle options include diaper rash ointment (plus the zinc in it is anti-inflammatory) or petroleum jelly. Don't forget to apply sunscreen daily for at least a week after exfoliating. Exfoliation is great, but reduces the skin's barrier against sun radiation. Editing to add: lol I forgot this video was about lips specifically. Although, most of what I said still applies, with the exception that I wouldn't put unrefined cottonseed oil on my lips. And I'll add: I'd use sunscreen in lip balm form.
As an internal medicine doctor, I'll say proceed with caution. Using glycolic acid, or any other product, on the lips leads to systemic oral absorption. Meaning, you accidentally injest small amounts over time. While minimal, some glycolic acid is then absorbed into the bloodstream through the mucous membranes, potentially affecting various bodily functions over time including digestion (mystery gastrointestinal issues), metabolism (as an alpha hydroxy acid, it could theoretically influence metabolic processes), and/or liver and kidney function. If you're going to use glycolic acid on or around the oral cavity be sure to use one that is specifically formulated to be safely used in the area.
I am contemplating trying this out as I just recently bought glycolic acid for skin and have applied it just once overnight on my face with ponds moisturizer after. I did not apply sunscreen the next day but it was raining heavily that day. And now the sun is out anytime, so no glycolic until I get a sun screen. I was reading the comments for recommendations for what product to use after applying it on the lips and then I came across yours. This seems obvious but yea it happens and its best to be cautious. Truly appreciate the PSA.
I’ve been doing this all over my face including my lips with my AmLactin lotion. I do a 6-10 minute mask and then wash it off. Works like a charm and prevents dryness and irritation from the drying effects that can happen with chemical exfoliation. 😅I’m glad to see a dermatologist doing the same thing in theory
It should probably go without saying but DONT do this if you have any open cracks on your lips. I get a big split in my lips pretty much every winter from how dried out they get 😭 it’s the worst!! I’ve had luck healing it up by applying layers of toner on my lips and then coating them with Vaseline!! I’m going to try the glycolic acid this summer, though! Gotta get off those dead layers!
i’ve had the same problem my whole life! my lips always look like a zebra in the winter because they get dry and crack, then the cracks turn into sores and the healing sores open back up and it’s awful😭🙏 but- i’ve started using the laneige lip mask. it’s a life saver, trust me😭 they’re not really pigmented either so you can wear it out normally like a regular lip balm, but it lasts so much longer
ugh I feel you. I get split lip on my lower lip, right smack in the middle 😫Happens constantly in the winter and its pain to heal as it keeps splitting. Can't skip lip balm even for a day.
Doc, I did the cleanser face mask, took out my toner and use products needed for 1 facial problem for 3months. My breakouts are taming, the acne scars are fading and my skin is loving the changes I did to my skin care products. Thank you. 😊
Straight lanolin, I literally use nipple cream (like for breastfeeding), works crazy well on dry cracked lips if you can’t do glycolic acid. It’s so emollient and hydrating I swear the dry skin just swipes off after a couple hours. I mean Lansinoh nipple cream is literally made to soothe and heal dry painful nipples from breastfeeding multiple hours a day of course it’s going to work great on your lips.
I had one start to form too, on my upper lip after also being dormant for years. But once that went away (2 days of abreva made it not form at all), the following week I tried again with lactic acid and only on the bottom lip. That was fine for a while so now I also press my lips together after applying to the bottom lip so that my upper lip gets a tiny leftover amount. That has been working for me, about 2-3x per week :).
@@brifer_350 I've been using the Ordinary's lactic acid serum since I have that on hand. But since watching Dr. Idriss, I've been trying to reduce the amount of products with hyaluronic acid in them, and that one has it. Once I'm finished with it, I plan on buying sephora's store brand lactic acid that they recently came out with. It has 5% niacinamide too, which is another thing she often goes over in her videos (anything much higher than 5% for niacinamide is too high). I'm going to use it mostly on my face probably but it'll also replace what I'm using now on my lips.
This is definitely not for everyone. My lips were raw and painful for two weeks after taking this advice. The pain would’ve lasted longer if not for the healing ointment that I’ve applied every night after that. Extra hydration is what works for me and what might work for others with sensitive lips. Applying skin care then covering the lips with a lot of vaseline so that in the morning you still feel some left, is what might help others as well.
@@oliviag8323 I’ve applied it only once on my lips. I’ve used it before on my nose, forehead and other parts of the body without any inflammation occurring.

I tried this with lactic acid last night, topped with Cerave healing ointment. It worked great. Every time I’ve used a product with glycolic acid i start itching.
I used to get dry lips all the time as a teenager, any product I used, nothing helped. Only for a very short period, temporarily, but it would always come back, without fail. I started drinking more water every single day and I have not had dry lips since!
This works so well for me, I'm using a glycolic acid on my lips and immediately I felt the results. I lick my lips a lot so theyre always peeling. The glycolic acid helped remove dry skin and my lips were the smoothest they've ever been. You have to make sure you add a layer of vaseline or even just some moisturiser on top to keep it locked in but it has helped my dry lips stay smooth so much.❤
I’ve been doing this for months without knowing it was your technique! I have very sensitive skin and can’t use glycolic acid on my face, but I’ve been using the 5% mandelic acid skin prep water by wishtrend and it really works wonders for me! One small drop goes a long way! And I finish off with the cicaplast lip balm from lrp
Can confirm a humid environment is not enough (can also confirm humidifiers barely break 25% humidity in 130+ yr old houses in New England winters, even set on highest output). It takes a combo of things to resolves chapped lips
@admiyaparames2228 in that case use Bepanthen ointment nuppy rush 5 nights in a row as night mask or Carolina herrera 8 day ointment you WILL see the result plus stop licking lips (it can be part of automatic habit or coping mechanism/consult psychologist if you lick them non stop)
@Sky10811 I will try the bepanthen oitment, thank you for recommending! A few weeks ago, I had a painful ulcer on my inner lower lip, and for whatever reason, when I have an ulcer, my dry lips are exacerbated, and it becomes unbearable and Petrolatum wasn't helping 🥲. I'll check bepanthen at my local pharmacy. Thanks!
It really works!! I was doing it because I’m a smoker and i didn’t want discolored lips and noticed it made my lips softer and more moisturized on top of getting rid of the discoloration
I use 1 drop glycerine and 2 drops of rose water(always ratio should be 1:2) and get the same results... Also the pigmentation on my lips reduced... What works for you works for you...
Yes, Ladyyyy! I been doing this on myself and clients for years and it is the only thing that works on my sensitive lips. I can’t do scrubs or over-hydrate them because they only get worse. ❤️❤️❤️
Dry lips indicates a bigger issue such as dehydration ( need more electrolytes and lack of good fats. I’m not saying that you can’t have dry lips on a freezing day with a windchill, but if your lips are constantly dry, you have bigger health issues and/or deficiencies.
So Dr Idriss, I also follow Dr Dray and she says NOT to put glycolic acid on the lips because they are far too delicate, something to do with the stratum corneum and absence of glands. Can you please settle this once and for all so I can resume having lush lips? 💋 thanks!
i agree. we can see that the content author uses glicolic for years but her lips having the same problem. even on this video her lips skin is far from ideal. i tryst Dr Dray more in this
Dr dray said we shouldn’t exfoliate the lips because there is no stratum corneum on it to exfoliate. No dead layer of cells. If i remember correctly. I think she said we should hydrate the lips then seal it in with a moisturizer or lip balm
Omg i was in so much pain bcos of my crusty lips. Ive been whining about it all day and came across this video. Im gonna cry cos my lips just feel healed and smooth and silky soft again 😭🥰❤ i cant thank you enough
Thank you, thank you! I'm 63 yr old comitolagest. I'm so into knowing how to fix n cont. To keep me staying younger than I am. Preferably naturally and chemically free! But I learn a lot from you so thank you
I discovered this technique once I git my cosrex aha bha toner , it was accident that went well and I still use the toner on my lips and moisturiser afterward
When you wash your face, wash your lips. Apply Vaseline, or Aquafor, or Cerave Healing Ointment or 100% lanolin often. Like about ever 4 hours. If needed more often, then make sure you're drinking enough water.
All that stuff just locks in moisture doesn't it? I thought you needed to actually moisturize first, then put something like Vaseline or aquaphor on top
It surprises me how many people have side effects of this ordinary glycolic acid but I never got any . Like I apply two times a day daily and I don't see anything bad happening except few bumps on my forehead . I applied it on cracked lips at night and it kinda burns because of the crack but it doesn't cause any problems. It even removed my lip pigmentation
I love using my cosrx aha bha toner, then applying some hyaluronic acid serum, and sealing it all in with vaseline. It really helps keep my lips. ❤️ smooth!
Been doing this since the 90s and prior to then with enzyme masks and whatever other facial masks I’ve used going back to the 70s . I never do lip scrubs there awkward and not that helpful. One of my favorite tricks is to put a piece of scotch tape of my lips and gently tear it off. I usually do my top lip, then lower, then both at the same time. Be careful it you have chapped, split lips . I got this from the beauty lady on the Ellen D show. 😊
I LOVE glycolic acid!! It was the only thing that got rid if stubborn bumps on my forehead!! Reduced the appearance of dark spots on my mom's back and is a great use for deodorant 👍🏻 my holy grail
DUDE IF YOU HAVE SENSITIVE SKIN, DO NOT PUT GLYCOLIC ACID ANYWHERE NEAR YOUUUUUU. AHA’s can be too much for sensitive skin. If you want a strong exfoliant for sensitive skin, use BHA’s or PHA’s. I have sensitive skin and used glycolic acid and I had a horrible rash over my face and it dried out my skin. Stinging is normal, but it was also genuinely uncomfortable.
I think it really depends person to person. I have sensitive, but acne prone skin, which means my skin doesnt exfoliate well naturally, but lots of things make my skin and eyes irritated. For me, AHAs have been a godsend, I have been using the Neutrogena AHA serum for maybe 2 years now, and they are the thing that calms my acne the best. If i could find glycolic acid serum, i would give it a shot, but mine has always been a blend of various AHAs and a little bit of salicylic acid, but I have tried mostly salicylic acid based products before, and they didnt do shit to my skin. So yeah, its very much a person-to-person type of deal
I use Pixi Glow and Overnight Glow serums that each contain glycolic acid. Not sure what percent is in the regular Glow, but the overnight lists 10% glycolic acid and arginine. I have sensitive skin and find I can use this 1-2x per week with no issue. I also use Pixi's retinol 1x per week at night in days where I have not used glycolic acid. I am just starting my skincare routine in my 40s so I am taking it slow so as not to traumatize already sensitive skin. For example, I cannot use benzoyl peroxide on my face. Hope this helps.
Are you kidding me... I stumbled across this video for the first time with the peelist lips in the world. Tried on the go. MY LIFE WILL NEVER BE THE SAME
Hi I love your videos! I have outbreaks of cold sores every year - maybe four a year. I was wondering if you had any good advice on prevention and quick ways to heal them please? I’ve tried lysine supplements, topical heat pen, topical aciclovir, spf lip balm. Just curious what the advice would be. Thanks!
Daily oral tablets of valacyclovir. I've been taking it on and off for 20 years. Game changer. I've learned to work with my body on this and I increase my dose as needed for outbreaks, and things have been great. I still get like 1 outbreak a year or less, but they're small, and last anywhere from 1 day to the usual week. I used to get them 4-6 times a year. I've never found topicals like abreva to work, because my Dr said it's meant to be applied in the tingle stage, and that once the blisters form its too late; for me the tingle stage would happen in my sleep and I could never intercept it. So I only use CBD oil as a topical (for literally anything, not just my lips... It's my windex) and the oral rx, and life's good!
Hey, ive been following your remedies since long and they really help. Mind doing a vid on non-genetic lip pigmentation? Ive tried quite everything by now and nothing has really helped ( mine is due to anemia, no smoking)
heyyy I came across this video just today... I didnt know it was actually a thing, but I often take some glycolic acid or other toner on a cotton pad and dab it across the lips, the dead cells would come off and then apply some vaseline or lip balm. Its part of my date night ritual😏
I had a really bad case of dry lips for about a year. I tried everything. The dryness crossed the vermillion boundary of my lips. I had given up and retreated to petroleum jelly. My new General practitioner said I should be using Eucerin Aquaphor and it worked brilliantly. Still does
I want to create a lip balm and lip oils. If I put it in the products, it won't work the same, will it? Will they work better with the acid if they use it similarly to how you are?
Or apply aquaphor at night and by the time you brush yiur teeth and was face in the morning all dead skin on the lips will slough off. Works 100% of the time for me
Hey Doc, can we just continue to say 39 even when your not? When even your BDAY..just continue with the thirty nine. We all are accustomed to hearing it and saying it in unison. Trademark. 40 just isn't the same. 🤣 PS. I got you girl! 39 club is REAL.
If any of you have an Indian grocery store around, see if they have this cream called Boroline. Trust me, it’s the BEST thing you can apply on your cracked lips or heels. Leave it overnight and see the magic. It has a strong (but pleasant) smell though.
Guess what i came up with this technique too , didn't know wt to name it .. used to use glycolic on face and started putting it on lips bcz i just wanted pinky pink lips not the darker line up there on upper lips ..and has started to get pink !!! ... And i use tp use a light moisturizer until i switched to a thick paste type moisturizer and it did wonders !!! doubled the goodness !.
