Even my dermatologist said that we’re actually need only 3-4 steps skin care routine to get clear skin and/or maintain it. Literally only cleanse, toning, moisturizing & protecting on a day. And that every each of it needs to be customized by personal skin’s need. You definitely can not wear those skin care from friend of yours just because you see their skin is perfect. Periodt Edit; those 10 steps skincare routine was made by beauty influencers only for hyping the brands which occurred with tons of various products.
People need to take advice from her and other reputable dermatologists here rather than digital creators and influencers who push over consumption of pricey "viral" products that they are "obsessed" with. 🙄
@@ginadiodati1965 I agree. Far too often, people turn to social media for medical advice. It's sad to see so many creators trying to pass off these ridiculous routines just to make money.
@22megabelle Yup. Most of it is to make money. I only use cleanser, SA 2%, moisturizer, and sunscreen. Some days, I'll add a lightweight gel toner. All those products address my needs. Not an influencer, and definitely not emulating someone that's using me for money/views.
This is so true! I spent a lot of money on skincare products in vain. When nothing else worked for my concerns I visited a dermatologist and was the best and less expensive decision I made. My skin is improving a lot and don't really need too much products.
@@JPcommunicatesI mean, yeah, spending 500 dollars on less effective skincare is a choice vs spending like 300. But that's kinda a dumb choice which is the whole point of these conversations, so idk what you wanna say dude lmao
I also thought that going to a dermptologist was a very right decision, but my experience of going to the doctor was negative. The doctor was completely uninterested in solving my problem and was superficial. his treatment did not help me get rid of the problem
I live in finland so I visited the skincare shop meaning cosmetologists and asked what type of skincare would I need well they told me go to the dermatologist. Well I did and they told me the cosmetologist would be better here and that she has no idea about skincare and they just treat skin diseases😂. Am I losing my mind or is there a 3rd doctor somewhere?
Keep in mind that every person is different, so if she does make a vid about this, we should take it with a grain of salt bc what works for one person might not work for another. Roughly speaking though it'd be good to be steered in the right direction of skincare
I saw another dermatologist’s video in which he explains why he thinks skincare (or skincare “culture”) is a scam. In the first part he displays a very thorough chart relating skin issues with the ingredients used to combat them (only ones that have solid scientific evidence of results) Hope it helps! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-k3aIeABbNvY.htmlsi=8BBBJqO7bHuohsGf Edit: if you can’t click the link, the name of the video is Why I Quit Skincare Videos by Dr Usama Syed
@@spacecatmeows yes but this is a short, instead of all that pointless crap at the end she could’ve easily replaced that time with doing a “not this but this” after each product/issue she mentioned.
@@ithilgreenleaf8184why would you take an advice from a person who never seen your skin? people should visit dermatologist if they want to take recommendations
THIS. I see a dermatologist and my skincare routine consists of a salicylic acid cleanser, adapaline gel at night, prescription clindamycin gel morning and night, and a moisturizer and sunscreen. I tend to stay away from any additional products because I learned the hard way that my sensitive skin just gets irritated with more stuff
Sounds good! Do you have any specific skin issues you don’t mind sharing? I have an adapaline gel at home and I want to know if I should be using it again
@@rudy5807do you have issues with breaking out (like acne)? Adapaline is specifically for that. I stopped using that and started another product when I realized my main concern was fine lines more so than my occasional breakouts.
Yes yes yes! I cleanse and moisturise once a day, and use sunscreen, and that is it. And this is coming from someone who has had a lot of problems with extreme oiliness and acne. My acne is caused by hormonal imbalances, and so being medicated for it is really the only way to treat it completely for me. Outside of that, keeping my skin care to the bare minimum essentials has been the absolute best thing for my skin quality. Don’t use products unless you genuinely, absolutely need them.
I got hormonal imbalances too (PCOS)!!! I've learnt just to wash my face, use a face mask once a month to peel anything left over off, and use spf on days I plan on going outside. Anything more than that, and my spots get even worse! I just have to live with my oily skin. Never found anything that works.
@@simona_merkinin what kind of a statement is that? people study professions but to know everything off the top of your head the way she does only comes with long term experience
@@Furdonkulous sure, but it's not mind-blowing that she knows stuff. Your original comment made it seem like it's a rare thing that a doctor knows what they are talking about.
If you know you don’t have a particular problem, then why don’t you just ignore the products being advertised to you. No one is forcing you to buy excessive amounts of products you don’t need but if you choose to buy, that’s your own fault, not the manufacturers.
I find the paulas choice bha liquid exfoliant has massively helped my pigmentation and reduce scarring from a bad spot i had. My skin has never looked better. I simply use micellar water twice a day to cleanse. Moisturizer and sunscreen for the day. Bha liquid exfoliant one night, retinol the next. Rinse and repeat. Works for me!
Dr I wanna thank you so much because since Ive stopped washing my face in the morning (I use Just water) my face has gotten waaay much better. Youre amazing!!!
@@yuruyuru-de1kdsounds like they have skin problems if they do. some people can only tolerate a single wash a day, and splash water to get rid of any residue grim or otherwise surface ick that can be rinsed away. while not clean, per say, their skin thrives better from what would otherwise be dry skin due to the cleanser. someone like me, i can do pretty much anything to my skin with no irritation. any product, any amount of washing, any amount of makeup. no blemishes, hyperpigmentation, or texture. just clear, clean, supple skin i try to take care of. other people are not as fortunate lol
@@yuruyuru-de1kdshe is still washing just not with products or a cleanser. If you showered every night and often change your pillow case I say you really don’t need to wash ur face with a cleanser in the morning especially if you got sensitive or dry skin. Oily skin might be different though. So it’s always best to monitor your skin and see what it likes and don’t like😅
I never wash my face with anything other than water. Never ever. My skin is 💯. To her point, use something if your skin needs it. My skin doesn’t, neither does it need sunscreen. Perhaps a dab of moisturizer in the winter. If you have an issue, you try to fix it. If you don’t, what’s their to fix.
Dang, I felt that🙃. It’s nice to see someone so passionate about helping others w/o the added interest of “lining their pockets” from all the money they make from over selling products that aren’t needed but easily sellable bc of what’s viewed and used by so many ppl on social media 👍🏽💝🙌🏽
Just an appreciation post for you!! I think you are great and in my opinion, you give the most educated, easy to digest info about skin. Thank you lady!!!!!!
I used to spend a lot on skincare but when I discovered this channel I started to buy only the products that I know my skin needs. Now, it's rare for me to have acne and my acne marks are slowly fading. Thank you so much Dr.! ❤
Can you please elaborate on what helped most ? My dermatologist was so useless to only recommend me moisturising everything and cut on lots of foods which didn't help at all 😢
@@kseniia_ @kseniia_ hi! I'm only using sunscreen during the day, retinol and moisturizer at night. I have oily skin so I don't really use too much moisturizer at night and I wash my face every morning with soap then use powder during the day to prevent my face from being oily. It's very important for me to not let my face get too oily as that causes break-outs. Also I find that facial wash products irritate my skin and I get little bumps on my forehead, so I just used soap instead. For the products; I use CeraVe moisturizer, a locally made retinol called +ful (I'm from the Philippines) i had also used the brand the Ordinary it works too, for the sunscreen I use the Foodaholic brand from Korea. I use Kojic acid soap.
super agreee! i was just using a barrage of products to address ALL the problems & i made my skin worse bc it was constantly inflamed or breaking out. recently went to a dermatologist and she brought me back to just niacinamide & a cleanser suited to my skin type. it’s been 3 weeks & my skin has remained the same, no breakouts even during PMS!! there are some spots but the aim first was the reduce the inflammation. it’s crazy.
"Consistency over intensity" A 4-step skin care routine addressed for your skin concerns is better than a 20-step routine meant for someone else P.s. You look absolutely beautiful Dr.Idriss ❤
Yea. We need more of this. It’s not very normalized to actually educate yourself on your own specific problems to find a custom solution. Just to buy what’s trending.
Wait… no SA with hyperpigmentation? That’s a bold and perhaps oversimplified statement for the many of us who use SA to treat acne and its related hyperpigmentation! From an initial google search it seems like SA does what we know it does, but in some cases the active ingredients can be harsh/irritating/inflammatory and can lead to “post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation” (PIH). But if used properly, long-term hyperpigmentation from SA isn’t a common issue. With care and moderation, for someone like me (mild acne/acne scar hyperpigmentation) I suspect SA may still be a decent option to treat acne well while exfoliating gently, and might basically be neutral towards the risk of worsening (or improving) hyperpigmentation. As with anything, avoiding overuse and skin irritation is big! I’ll look into the data on this further. If anyone has an idea about the reality of this, let me know!
I’m pretty sure she means that if you are using SA specifically hoping it will fade hyperpigmentation then you are not helping yourself because there are much better ingredients like azaleic acid or niacinimide (she made a whole video about hyperpigmentation) but SA is not an ingredient that targets hyperpigmentation it really only targets acne
Using salicylic acid on active acne may prevent future hyperpigmentation from the acne since acne can cause PIH/PIE. However, it cannot treat hyperpigmentation that already exists.
this is so true, i never had problems with my skin and never had any skincare routine just water and moisturizer. then, i was influenced by tiktok about korean skincare and started implementing it to my routine, now my skin is worse than ever and even prescribed medication won’t work.
Thanks to you I am being constant for the first time in my life and you are sovcorrect. My skin has turned around so much and I thank you so much. I am even using suncream . Thank you so much Dr. Idriss.
FINALLY AND THANK YOU!!!! As an esthetician, i always say this. Some listen, some don't, and does that doesn't, always come back and say that they paid alot of money for expensive skincare, and nothing have changed. 🤦♀️
Theres a reason why so much products exist though lol its to find one that suits your skin the best and sometimes more steps is needed because your skin prefers certain formulations. Skincare is really trial and error but when you find it boy does it make a difference
i’ve been using skincare since i was in my teens and i do have a ton of products but i don’t use them all at the same time. i use them when i can physically see my skin need them. if my skin seems dry i use a cream. if not too much, i use an emulsion. retinol once a week. bha once a week. double cleanse after putting on makeup. if my skin looks fine, i don’t put anything at all!
So many people need to hear this, especially people who splurge on massive amounts of skin care products just because they see influencers use them. Not even the influencer needs that many different products!! It's just excessive and leads to so much waste.
I wish you would do a custom skin care . Example 1 is for acne prone sensitive skin! 2 hyperpigmentation and fine lines . 3 thin skin and wrinkles . I use so much to alternate so i know my skins getting what it needs . But i have cut down because i was breaking out bad
100 percent agree. My skin was a mess all because i was following trends. I had to stop and go with what my skin actually needed and would tolerate. It looks better than ever now!!
Once I stopped using a hundred products to treat my acne I was able to clear my skin using a gentle cleanser and moisturizer and sunblock. My skin has been clear ever since.
I have severe cystic acne and it would be my whole face, down my neck to my back and chest and upper arms. I tried every possible routine from prescription to otc. 5 steps, 8 steps, different toners and serums. One day I just gave up and started using only new born baby soap and moisturizer. It changed my whole life. I was still prone to severe breakouts so I also went to a derm and got a daily prescription pill to help with the hormones causing the flare ups. More is not always better!!
This!! I work in the skincare industry and everyday I see a large number of clients buy products for the sake of buying or buy completely wrong products for their problems just because someone on social media made a post about it.
Interesting this is the type of knowledge I always try to find. What not to mix in a skincare routine, what’s best for me and stuff that I shouldn’t be using, I had no idea I shouldn’t use salicylic acid with hyperpigmentation. I was going to buy Paula’s Choice liquid exfoliator but maybe not then.
For hyperpigmentation, it's cousins AHAs like glycolic or lactic acid are the right ones to target it, along with a product containing at least three of these: vitamin c, niacinamide, alpha arbutin, tranexamic acid, kojic acid or licorice root!
Through the years I followed you, I found what works for me and stuck to it. I narrowed down my skin care to just double cleansing (cleansing balm + foam cleanser), bha toner (Paula's choice) + moisturiser + sunscreen. At night it would be retinol instead of bha toner + moisturiser. I stopped having several serums because the bha and retinol alternate use solved almost all issues I have with my skin, which is mostly just clogged pores and texture, and of course, some fine lines. I just have an extra salicylic acid cleanser and some pimple patches for the occasional pimple. I'm just now saving up for a microcurrent device to take it up a notch. Thank you, Dr. Shereen!
Thats why i always shake my head when i see people in the comments asking for celebrities' and influencers' skincare products and routines. You can't copy someone else's curated routine. They have different and unique skincare needs. Its better to see a dermatologist and get a specific routine curated to your needs. Its better money spent than wasting money buying products which dont work for you or worse yet damage your skin.
I’m 39 years old and have thick oily/acne-prone skin…no wrinkles, no fine lines yet…I swear by Tretinoin and Hydroxy Acids (AHA and BHA). And I love a simple Hyaluronic acid serum on my damp face just before applying my Tretinoin, I live in a hot and humid climate and most moisturizers are just too heavy and greasy.
I learned this from a Chemist that started making her own skin care products! She was the one who told me that HA will just sit on top of your skin. You will look hydrated but once you wash that off, it will wash off too, it doesn't penetrate your skin.
No it's vitamin C during the day and retinol at night, not both honey.I did the same thing. Then I went looking for a video that I seen her say Vitamin C during the day & retinol at night.Vitamin C is to prevent the sun and retinol at bedtime.Your not in the sun at night and that's what it's for.Im so sorry but, your wasting your vit C.Goodluck darling .Have a great day.Bye.
this is something that a lot of young people need to get through their heads very very early on. So many girls my age I see spending literally hundreds of dollars a month on random skincare, products, treatments, etc. simply because they see them online. it is pure over consumption and in some cases honestly teetering into an addiction to shopping. Before you buy any product, you need to look into what it does and what it does on different skin types. You also need to look into what it will do when mixed with the other ingredients in your current skincare
Exactly! I have been to around 4 dermatologists. The common thing i found was that all four of them only focused on cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen (also shampoo if you have dermatitis). I had blackheads too and for that none of them suggested scrubs or peel off mask. I was given gel ointments and thats it. All these serums and 20 products thing is not at all necessary. If you want to, you can. But its not necessary.
In a nutshell, less is better. My skin was breaking out like crazy when i use skincare products with those ingredient and no it's not purging. So then i tried using only gentle cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen. Since then, my skin stopped breaking out and less mad acne pop out. Though this is my experience and everyone skin is different.
Your hydrating mist recipe (glycerin, rose water and water) is the product I’ve been waiting for my whole life. I only use retinol at night now and sometimes some form of acid for exfoliation and bright skin. I’ve stopped using active ingredients during the day, vitamin C and niacinamide are not for me. Only barrier cream and sunscreen. With a refresh during the day of SPF and your mist. At 40 my skin has never felt healthier.
I remember the days when teens would actually go to a certified dermatologist to get prescribed these sort of products. Its good that they are over the counter so more people can get access to them, but perhaps we should do a little more research into what product helps with what problem!
It really comes down to what you're eating. If you have vitamin deficiencies, don't drink water, never work out, and don't shower regularly, you'll have skin problems. That's why you see poor people with amazing skin. They don't eat toxic foods and stick to the basics
What products/ treatments do you recommend for skin with lots of acne scars? I don't break out anymore but used to in my early 20s and have lots of acne scars
I only know I have combo skin, oily but dries and flakes. 😭 I have acne probably due to dairy I think. I've tried some nice products from ipsy and just made me more oily and breakout so stopped and right now just cleaning with water to recover.
I tend to stay away from additional skincare products as well, aside from those necessary products I use for occational breakouts and dry skin. My skin was healthier that way. Tried using a ten step method, but it didn't work out. Plus it was expensive as well.
i had to stop using hyaluronic acid bc it wasn’t working with my skin care routine but i was feeling down bc i thought it was soooo good for us and we needed it but my skin said no 😭😭😭
so true. i got into skincare when i truly didn’t need it (i added like four serums and exfoliants) i had hardly any acne and then i started breaking out like crazy (my forehead was a minefield of closed comedones) and after a year i quit everything but cleanser (dial soap bar lol) sunscreen and a la roche posay moisturizer or whatever it’s called and my skin has literally no acne whatsoever. sometimes we just don’t need anything and adding extra steps makes it worse (speaking from a non acne prone skin type) but i think generally less is more when it comes to products. try focusing on the biggest issues like she said and don’t overload your skin
i've been trying TONS of viral skincare products and they barely worked then i decided to go to a dermatologist, crying, bc my bf said my skin felt harsh and there was barely any result from my skincare routine and my skin gets better in just 2 months my skin problems are active acne and hyperpigmentations, my dermatologist prescribed me with adapalene, azelaic acid and clindamycin on the first month there was just a slight improvement and she prescribed me with tretinoin as the replacement of adapalene my skin never felt any better than this! i was so mad at my bf for being so honest at that time but now i feel so grateful for him 😂❤
you are lucky to have a good doctor. My doctor prescribed me a facial wash and sunscreen. Obviously, foam and spf did not solve the problems with my skin. so I'd rather spend some money and try everything until I find something that really helps me. in any case, a lot of positive feedback from ordinary people who used these products and were satisfied with the result!!! so it makes sense
@@grimslepers i was in denial lol i wanted to believe that what i did was enough and had good results which made me feel insulted, while in actuality there was barely any result
The one thing that l found had a major impact on my skin looking good?...you guessed it, sunscreen protection! Im 58 and for the past 8 years have been using spf50 ( light to med.skin tone) EVERY day, not just in summer and yes even when its cloudy. I use it even if lm going to stay indoors. My skin looks great, some sun damage has also been reversed and people always think lm at least 10 years younger.Apart from that ,only cleansing and spf in the morning and cleansing and moisturizing with most nights using castor oil as well.
Yes, i learned this as a 20 year old. I'm now 54 and people think im in my 40s. As the years have gone on, ive adapted my regime to suit my skin's needs. Thanks mum😊
when i over complicated my skincare routine i had the worse breakout known to man (as someone who never had acne prior). I thought I needed several toners and all these actives. My skin took months to return to its regular state. Now all i do is wash my face at night, moisturizer, Sunscreen during the day and the occasional paula’s choice BHA to exfoliate once a week. And maybe a nice hydrating sheet mask one a month for funsies (more so during the winter tho). I used vitamin C after my breakout for all the dark marks I was getting from popping my pimples. Once they were gone, I had no use for it.
Listen, that Paula’s choice BHA thing is the only thing that got rid of my acne and cleared my hyperpigmentation. I’m excited to try the new one with glycolic acid
Yes! I used to buy so many products and have an entire 10 step routine. Now it’s just my face wash, moisturizer and sunscreen during the day. At night it’s the face wash again, and I add four drops of castor oil into my moisturizer. Never had better skin
My skincare routine recently changed after I went to my first facial. I stopped using other skincare and sticked to the basic of cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen and sometimes a benzoyl peroxide cleanser to stop my acne prone skin to act up. And so far that works for me so much.
Exactly, and also kids these days are buying skin care products for no reason, if u have issues with ur face then u should get skin care, if ur skin doesn’t have problems don’t get skin care!
Ever since i stopped using tons of products, my skin got better. I just used cleanser, niacinamide, vitamic C and moisturizer then Spf. My skin looks so much better now.
Thanks so much, I literally ruined my face cuz I thought I had acne but now I have too much due to the tablets I took and acne medications…Im still trying to get over the pimples I get and the freaking scarring
I used to see in my home country, the poor and unprivileged village women had the beautiful skin. I think the everyday sun exposure, pollution, dust in the city, using too much product some of the reasons pf skin damage. Most importantly, gifted skin is a blessing from Allah.
Oh yeah I’ll be following. Everything you just made declarations about another tik tok influencer was recommending everything, that you just shot deepen. And you’re very attractive.
GUYS she's so right!!! find what works the best for YOU. i literally used so many expensive skincare products but at the end my skin only cleared up when I now started using a savlon soap bar with a antiseptic moisturizing cream and an affordable sunscreen 😍😍🤚😽
