Host Marcia Alvar speaks with Linda Schele, Professor of Art at the University of Texas at Austin, and co-author of "Maya Cosmos: 3000 Years on the Shaman's Path." Professor Schele recounts her first involvement in the study of the Maya and in deciphering the Mayan glyphs. She discusses the stories and events told by the glyphs, and how they have redefined or disproved our previous conceptions of the Mayan society.

Dr. Linda Schele's name keeps popping up in almost all my reference books on the Maya. It's great to actually see/hear her!

"All of us who are Americans...we're taught that the history of the Americas begins in 1492...what the Maya have given us is one of the most detailed, rich, precise written histories that any human society has left us...when we teach our children world history we ought to be teaching them the name of Janaab' Pakal and Yaxun B'alam right along the side of Tutankhamun and Julius Cesar" - Linde Shele

Linda was a great teacher, very inspirational. I did a paper on 'Mayan Bloodletting' for her. RIP Linda.

Linda Schele is one of several people who seem to have fallen into Mayan studies almost entirely by accident. Another very important example is Tatiana Proskouriakoff, who was an architect and draftswoman. Both of these women made major contributions to the eventual decipherment of the Mayan hieroglyphs.

the first book I bought about Mayan culture was written by Linda Schele, it's about 35 years ago. This is the first time I hear Mukta Antz Chingon ( Large Woman F****r) as she was caled by the Maya's, speak. She shaped my vieuw and concept of the Mayans.

I have learned, if you know how to read something, doesn't mean you know the actual meaning. You talk about math, but how you write the equations, not just numbers. Exactly!

"God" did not die for humankind; the Bible says THE SON (CHRIST) OF GOD (YAHWEH) is who died for mankind.
