This car was a 2003 chevy impala with a misfire due to a compression issue.
Special thanks to THOMAS EXOVCDS who sent me a pair of I VUE camera glasses to try out. My hope is to be able to get more content out there when i wont have to stage with a camera all the time. It did make the editing more complex and i got tired of doing the same job over and over again ...HA... so im sorry if its too long or boring with excessive lulls. Ill try to get better

Hi James... thanks for the huge shout-out! The glasses will take some getting used to (tilting head enough to record stuff when looking down). Video & Audio quality can be adjusted via the "settings" text file when you boot up the glasses. Video quality can obviously not be compared with what camcorders can do... but I'm sure that in the future, quality will improve (might have a 4k version at some point). I probably turned the "beeper" off during the time that I was testing them. The user manual will explain how to turn everything on / off and how the settings are adjusted. I find the glasses handy because I don't have to worry about repositioning a camera constantly. If all you end up doing is using them for fishing, that's fine too! =) The baby stickers were made because of my loud exhaust: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RHuuE_VqDBU.html For those that don't want to type the link: goo.gl/N5CgSi

+Thomas EXOVCDS thanks again bro . I had some better content with the glasses but realized that a lot of it wasn't in the field of view. I do have some fishing footage when my brother brought his rv to my camp a few weeks ago

I've found when having to drill out holes inside an engine where metal shavings can destroy lives, a small paper cup, some contact cement and a bit of silly putty can work well to contain the shrapnel! Use the silly putty to fill in any holes and/or make yourself a flat surface, then use contact cement in very small quantities to adhere the paper cup to the surface. Make sure to pre-punch a hole in the cup, though! :D

me: Replace head with a salvaged one... Heads off to a machine shop while I'm changing the timing components. Shortcuts to save money usually burn you with comebacks. This engine already has a history of shortcuts. Tear it down.

hey james this is a 2 thumbs vid one for the vid and another for Thomas exovcds for the glasses.....just a note here; if you ever mix up the intake and exhause push rods and start the vehicle YOU WILL BEND VALVES!!! 100%.....good repair vid james!!!

Great Video. The 3.4's came with both sized bolts in different years. I have done a lot of 3.4 work in vans. I have a thing for doing heads on 3.4's I just love it for some reason. When I go get a set of heads at the junk yard I always have to check to make sure which size rockers they have and it if they are different than the ones I pulled. Those rockers striping out aren't and unusual occurrence especially on the 10mm heads. The old trick is that the heilicoil tap for the 8mm will fit in the stripped 10mm hole with little or no drilling and then you put a 8mm rocker on it. But your 8mm one doesn't look like it was heilicoiled before. A common reason for them to strip and break is because someone put the push rods in backwards (intake and exhaust) check them and make sure they are not bent ad they are in right. The exhausts are 1/4 inch longer. Someone probably did heads on it before and got those two mixed up and then did a repair on it.

10.20.18. The 3.1/3.4 L GM V-6 engines have issues with the aluminum threads in the head stripping out the rocker arm bolts, usually after the L.I.M. Gaskets or head gaskets are serviced.....Due to not using a Lisle 48300 pushrod removal tool while removing the rocker arms when changing the L.I.M. Gaskets. If you don’t use the Lisle 48300 tool you have to make certain that before you loosen the rocker arm bolts, each cylinder must be at TDC on their compression stroke so that the rocker arm is not trying to open its corresponding valve. You must remember that it’s a fulcrum action......thus putting tension on the rocker arm bolt/thread in the aluminum head junction! .....When the cam/lifter is trying to open its valve......Also TimeCert’s ™️ make a kit to repair these that are superior to Heilicoil’s ™️❗️🚗

Fantastic job Danner. I hate inserts. You did an excellent job using both the camera and glasses. Thomas is a great guy and I've watched quite a few of his videos. Looking forward to more videos with either the glasses or camera. Thanks!

most all the remanufactured heads are drilled and tapped to 10MM bolts, they call it an upgrade. I call it fudge, because the head material was (*^*&$#&# junk :))

I'm wondering if the broken pieces got caught in the valve's spring. That may prevent the valve spring from fully compressing, and the bind would let the pushrod strip out the threads or break the rocker, as it's going to continue pushing up on it's end, regardless of whether the valve is able to move any more.

the broken piece jammed under the spring or rocker and ripped out the threads. the pushrods and lifters may not be "no bueno" now :)
@jarrod8914
@jarrod8914 7 лет назад
I get to wondering why these threads strip. I think a lot of the time it is maybe the vehicle has set for a while and the gas goes bad and does not lubricate the valve as good as fresh gas and it makes the valves stick.

Seen a 3.4 with a broken cam shaft had a cylinder Bill 300 psi and install the engine because the pulled out Stud on ext could've let pressures get so high that the intake valve could not open and shatter the rocker

That was a real nice thing to do Thomas. Have seen those things fail many times, James. I wonder if too loose rather than too tight is the cause. I have seen those rockers actually move slightly at the base with the engine running and have found the bolts loose. Don't know why they changed to the smaller bolts. Must have been cheaper to manufacture.

+wysetech2000 I wish I knew what year/ model had the 10mm already. Obviously I had the one that was broken was a 10 . and found used ones on ebay. I would have rather had those instead of an insert. But u work with what u have I guess

That was a job well done ! Just wondering how you go about informing/charging the customer for this? Charge up until the compression test an initial diagnostic fee and then more for going deeper to find the actual cause for the low compression ? And then inform then that repair may not be a permanent fix? My friend recently overheated his 4.7 jeep which lead to zero compression between two cylinder along with a smashed spark plug in one. Car wouldnt run and at that point I said to let it go lol
@jamesdanner7850
@jamesdanner7850 7 лет назад
+LS swap it yea. Up to the compression test would have been a fair 1 hr charge. Since he wanted to go farther we kinda came up with a minimum number based on replacing a valve spring which was my initial suspicion. With the acknowledgement that if I pull the valve cover and it's worse that what I thought, the head might have to come off. Then it would be 2 hours and an estimate for a head . You gotta be fair but u gotta make money
@mattanderson1831
@mattanderson1831 7 лет назад
James Danner that sounds very fair. Your time is worth money, and sometimes it takes a while to find the culprit. Thanks for the video

just had a van with the same issue with pulling threads in 4 different rockers. helicoil worked on 2 of them but kept pulling ghee helicoil out of the others so i used a better thread cert called "big cert" that was the only thing that fixed it. i researched and found its common..something to do with the heads metallurgy or something, also noticed newer head designs used the larger 10mm bolt s
@jamesdanner7850
@jamesdanner7850 7 лет назад
+Michael Leon I noticed that some reman heads had the 10mm threads but could not find the 10mm rockers anywhere but used on ebay. I would have been just as happy to do it that way
@leebarnes655
@leebarnes655 7 лет назад
Same story with VW air cooled where any torque above 22 ft lbs would pull a head stud. Standard helicoil could work but only marginally, and had to be done perfectly. The real solution was a way oversize solid steel device that had some real roots to it. Once one of those was in there the issue could be put to bed. IIRC joy was only found at 14 mm and studs were 10 mm for early ones.

or try wearing a separate mic, maybe...something small that can clip to your collar or somesuch - if the glasses have a way to connect one. That way, the audio would always be consistent, regardless of which camera you're using at that moment.
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 7 лет назад
Aussie... Video & audio (sensitivity) can be adjusted in settings. James just needs to play around with them to find the settings that work well for him. Adding a separate mic adds more things to the editing plate... it all depends on how happy he wants to make his viewers. =)
@EXOVCDS

James... the glasses pick-up music from the shop radio we have playing. RU-vid flags music when it detects it... a real pain when you want to monetize videos.
