GM Inline 6 Intake Blocks Explained EP.10

This video was made simply to explain the custom intake blocks that I use on my GM Inline 6 engines. These blocks can be added to just about any aluminum intake manifold and installed on a 194, 230, 250 or 292 engine. They work well with a modified set of Clifford headers and should work well with the Headman long tube headers.

This is a massive improvement over the factory clamps! I worked on the big brown delivery trucks with 292’s and 300’s and for 16 years until they were phased out, this was a huge problem.

My first car was a 64C10. It had a 230. I put on an Offenhauser four barrel intake with an adapter for a Holley 500cfm two barrel. Hooker headers and had my cam reground. 375 hp 396 grind. 500 lift and 290 duration. Pretty fast for a 6. The intake came from my friends Dads oval track race car. It was fun. I won races with it.

I like the fuel injection system ! With a carb 1-2 and 5-6 will always run lean compared to 3-4 with those intakes ! I put together a 250 back in the 90's had ten grand in the motor to avoid the lean issue I had a sheet metal intake made to staighten out the intake runners ,for performance the inline has to be in a very light car as they just don't have enough torque to pull a vehicle more than 3000lbs with the driver ! I put a 230 crank in it, as it's 30lbs lighter than the 250 , I traded 20 cubes for 30lbs less rotating mass , also installed 11to 1 TRW piston for a 238 that worked out to be right at 14to1 with the combination chambers in the head . ( $8 a gal fuel only ) plus the cam was .710 lift solid roller, and most of the money went into the head, not to mention the valve cover to cover the valve train , custom $400 of 1990 money! Had to Rev it to about 8000 rpm to get anything out of it ! It had nothing under 4000 rpm Finally I replaced it with a 7:1 427 big block set up for a 8-71 . Sold the 6cyl to some kid that had a 65 chevy II for $500 best sale I ever made ! Should of had a V-8 ! Have fun people .........

It's a lot easier to build an inline that makes good power and still has street manners today. Sounds like you built an engine meant for a race track! And who doesn't like the power of a big block. I had a 402 in a first gen Monte that was a lot of fun.

I'm interested as well. Do they have to be welded or can you add a gasket and clamp the intake flange to the adaptor flange using the stud? Any thoughts on creating a wedge shaped center insert to extend just slightly between the injectors which may isolate the injectors and would create better airflow around the bolt boss vs cutting or shaping the boss. I have not seen your prior videos so I don't know if this issue has been brought up.
@SquaredAwayGarage

This works best with a lump port and the bolt boss removed. Welding the intake and spacer blocks is your best option for the best results. But you can try sandwiching them in place with hardware.

Great idea, do you think these would work with the Langdon style cast iron headers? I’m running a 292 with Clifford and Langdon. Every time I take it apart it seems like I have an exhaust leak.
@SquaredAwayGarage
@SquaredAwayGarage 2 года назад
It may be possible, but it hasn't been tried yet. One of the modifications that I make to the headers is to put a full loop around the mounting stud so that the flange head nuts have plenty to hold onto. That is an easy modification with a steel flange headers like the Clifford units. That modification will be more challenging with a cast manifold. I'm also not sure about clearance around the Langdon manifold. Might require some massaging.

So, I've built a few of these engines with upgraded manifolds (mostly for eliminating the "integral head"). Other than the mounting improvements, is there any performance improvements with them? Maybe I should check out your website..
@SquaredAwayGarage
@SquaredAwayGarage Год назад
The only gains outside of mounting are secondary by making other mods much easier. They make it very simple to port match the intake. And I'm currently working on a mpfi engine that will have head dividers. The dividers are going to be two piece, one piece in the head and the second piece will be part of the intake. My spacers are making that process very easy also. I'll have a video about that coming later. Then of course the efi kits give you a jumpstart on that upgrade.

very nice adapter kit . but i question why you did not ceramic coat the headers too, plus that intake manifold is going to require 2 support bars to the engine block , now that you have added much more weight to the intake manifold ,it is going to need weight support

@@danpatterson2336 that is good to hear , but if i were you, i would still fabricate and install support bars for the intake manifold , those mounting tabs are not that strong , the reason why the factory did not add support bars is because the intake and exhaust manifold were bolted together and the exhaust pipe acted as a support for both

What benefit other than the injector boss, do these have? I see the Aussie Speed manifold has the boss for injectors?
@SquaredAwayGarage
@SquaredAwayGarage 2 года назад
Yes the Aussie Speed and other intakes have a beveled surface meant for injectors. If you watch the video at the end I show pictures of a Clifford intake with the intake spacers installed on a 292 engine with MPFI and a Holley TB. If you notice in the photos the fuel rail and the TB would not clear each other if you tried to use the bosses that were made into the intake. Additionally, the space provided in the intake doesn't allow you to space the injectors very far apart. The injector holes in the spacer blocks aligns the injectors with the intake valves. The mounting process is far superior to the old factory clips, additional space between intake and exhaust helps keep the intake from getting as hot, and the spacers make porting the head simple if you use them on the head before you weld them to the intake. Once on the spacers are welded to the intake, intake porting is very easy also. Everything lines up perfectly.

Are they a form of Lump Porting? Will they work with a 500 CFM type AFB Four Barrel Carburetor?
@SquaredAwayGarage
@SquaredAwayGarage Год назад
No, lumps are completely seperate from these. The spacers are meant to be used with the intake manifold. Lumps go inside the head.
@roughboygarage1475
@roughboygarage1475 Год назад
What's the reason for the blocks? Looks like it would be easier and more cost effective to just machine the Aussie Speed intake for the injectors. Since they already have a pad on each runner just for that.
@SquaredAwayGarage
@SquaredAwayGarage Год назад
They were originally for space. All the aftermarket intake manifolds have a place for injectors. The first issue was the low angle of that designated area. It barely tips the injector and essentially fires it straight into the bottom of the manifold. I thought a steeper angle would be better. From there the second issue was space. The fuel rail and the throttle body wanted to occupy the same space. And once a spacer was decided on, a major upgrade to how the intake and exhaust mount was designed.

No problems at all. I believe TI and SS will react against each other and could cause issues. In this case the TI studs are in a cast iron head with a steel header flange and an aluminum intake. I'm not sure if anitseize would even survive very long since it would be exposed to exhaust temps. I deal with a lot of SS fasteners. The easiest way to avoid issues is to NOT use impact guns. Hand tighten and loosen everything. That is how I have treated the TI fasteners also and it is working so far.

i can see one possible downside to the use of just one bolt, even though, i do like it. if the stud comes loose in the head, when you take of the intake, you have to also take off the exhaust header.
@SquaredAwayGarage
@SquaredAwayGarage 11 месяцев назад
The stud has one nut on it to hold the exhaust in each position and one nut to hold the intake in each position. The nut that holds the exhaust is underneath the intake manifold. As long as it is torqued appropriately, it should never come loose if you wanted to remove the intake. And my experience with the titanium hardware has shown me that is an additional upgrade. The Ti hardware doesn't even need to be retorqued after a few heat cycles.
