I occasionally see an I-6 aluminum manifold at the Monroe Swap Meet, just Northeast of Seattle. But I didnt look closer to see if they were for a 192/250/292, or something else. I DO know they weren't for a Mopar slant 6, those are very distinctive looking.
@donellmuniz590
@donellmuniz590 4 года назад
As a garage owner, do you have the tools or ability to fabricate your own manifolds? It's only tubing, after all. I would love to try, but I don't know how to weld worth a damn. I have mig and stick, and I suck at both! But someday I'm gonna try to build my own steel manifolds for a Slant 6! For a rat rod with no hood, so it'll be a HI RAM intake and zoomie exhaust!
@Verticalpedalgarage
@Verticalpedalgarage 4 года назад
Donell Muniz I don’t actually own a professional garage, it’s just the name of my RU-vid channel. Lol. I do have a TIG and can fabricate pretty much anything I want (that’s not me saying I’m a professional fabricator by any means, simply saying I can do it). I actually found aluminum and stainless flanges for the intake and exhaust to build my own manifolds and intake. But by the time I get all the needed parts for boost, I might as well save some cash and go modern FI LS in my K30.

I almost forgot that a Chevy 292 was the first engine I worked on with my father. We had a boat with twin engines. At the time I was 8 years old in 1988 and I remember handing my dad the wrenches so he didn't have to keep getting up and down in the boat. I remember him being very detailed and explaining to me how the cam and lifters work, and inturn lift the rocker arms which allow air in and out of the cylinder. I still remember him telling me the cam is the brain of the engine. Good times and good lessons taught.

Back in the early 70's there was a guy in the town i grew up in that had a 69 nova 4 door ,originally had a 250 six in it,he added all the clifford speed parts to it,it was fast. All the while he was building a bored out 292 six,that had high compression small block chevy pistons in it,cammed,ported head ( long before Sissel invented the lump port mod ) headers and 4 barrel. This car was the ultimate sleeper ! Surprised many a v8 muscle car.

Wonder how many car salesman talked this engine up calling it "THE BIG SIX" I heard it plenty back in the day, It's Basically saying this is the "no not the small terd this is the BIG TERD! I swapped a Qjet onto a Chrysler 2.2 in an old Dakota that had a bad electronic carb with 5" tall homemade adapter nicknamed the "Funnel Ram" and it ran beautiful on those lill primarys if you fanned the throttle fast enough then peg it you could get enough fuel in it to take allll four barrels and man BZZZZZ that old tierd 2.2 sounded like it was going to the moon with actual some Qjet moan! it was great lol, scary part was standing there as far from it as you can while still holding the throttle linkage. Main motivater was all the people saying you can't do that... Wanna bet! That crude adapter is still kicking around.

We built one for our roundy round dirt 40 Mercury. 1972 I was 16. If I remember correctly Honest Charley had the camshaft and Weiand intake. Hedman headers and a Rochester 2gc throated, polished and jetted. That long rod beast ran 7 grand all night. We got the roll over trophy!

My grandad was a big fan of that Chevy 6 cylinder series. Everything he had was run stock. They weren’t fast, but they were reliable. Because he lived in a rural area, he put a truck flywheel on a 250 in a 67 Impala with a 3 Speed stick. It wouldn’t rev very fast but it sure would get going without much gas and creep along fairly well thru the mud. The rest of the car didn’t last as long as the motor. Imagine what a that 6 would do with better breathing and cam. Great video!

Hey Richard, in Brazil this is kind of a "flagship" engine. hundreds of thousands were made, but mostly the smaller brother, the 250cid. We use to make a stroker, with a 292 crank, and 4" pistons, on a lighter 250" block, a nice engine, over 300 cid. If you have some time to spare, search for "opala" and "drag racing brasil". there is a bunch of this engines putting out 4 digits of power, and running in the low 7´s (!) in the 1/4 mile, stock block and stock iron heads. we also used to have, in the 70´s 80´s and 90´s the stock car circuit racing, with opalas and 250cid NA, triple weber carbs. Very good to see this engines here with you! Just a reminder, this boys DO like boost A LOT!

Richard, aluded to Clifford and other intakes. I would have loved to seen a 4 bbl intake tested on this car vs the stock 1 bbl one that was used, as well as a couple of cams as well. to show the difference in power. Boost is going to be wasted with the 1 bbl intake, because if it doesn't have enough flow for the dominator carb, it can't handle boost either.

My 292 has had a few mods. 1. I have 3 Weber progressive 2 barrel carbs, total 675 cfm mounted on home made tubular manifolds. 2. The head has been modified with lump ports in the 3 intake ports. 3.The forced induction is a home made air box fed air from a blower (ex Grand National) 4. The head has been given a full porting and relief job. The engine has alot of balls. It originally came from a 51 chev pick up. The truck is not the greatest, it is my test bed for the engine. The engine wase your average inline 6, not a tire burner at all. Now, the truck is crazy off the line. I have no idea what horsepower its making, but its a lot, twisted the frame of the pickup, which wasnt the best anyway. Really happy with the engine. Plan to put it in the deuce i am building, should be interesting.

If I'm thinking correctly, the little flapper valve in the intake is activated by a heat-expansion element sort of like a carburetor choke. Its open when the engine is cold to and closes when its hot to help warm up the engine quicker because engines are less emissions efficient when cold than they are warm.

In the present configuration, I think the addition of Chrome plated muffler bearings (even though you are not using mufflers) could have got this combo up into the 250 hp range and torque in the 300 ft lb range. The thing to watch is make sure the jetting is sufficient so that a lean condition does not turn the chrome blue. When that happens all gains are lost and you have to install new bearings! If you need some for future projects, I have a stash I can give you until I have a new batch made. Also, like mufflers, you can go too small or too big, but I can give you some pointers on what size to use. Until then, I enjoy your dyno work....keep it coming.

So basically, the 292 with the 500 cfm 2 bbl and headers is a good combination for running in basically stock trim. If it were me I'd be on the lookout for an Offenhauser intake manifold, or I'd look into what it would take for me to make my own. You could most likely take the manifold to a machine shop and see if they can replicate the factory flanges in aluminum or stainless for you, order some 90s and a 4 bbl flange off the internet, and weld em up. Still though, an Offenhauser intake would be sick to have. You DEFINITELY could use a high lift cam though...

Swapping in a 636 big block diesel cat. Then go 4wd with a solid axle up front aswell. The 292 will be dropped into something else. We ran it wide open for 3 days straight 10 hours a day on the old set up doing 60 mph on the interstate. We retro fitted some c10 headers and did an intank and did a in frame rebuild on it but that's it. They will run forever lol.

@The94GTC the 500 Holley would have made much bigger gains if the manifold was replaced. As Richard demonstrated air flow was maxed and by the restriction of the single barrel manifold. If he cut out that section and welded in a two or four barrel plenum box you would see the same amount of power jump again with the same carbies.

@The94GTC but yes inclined to agree for a budget upgrade switching to a 2 barrel Rochester is a cheap way to get more power. Something we did back in the day.

What was the smoke I was seeing? Rings a little loose? I love these tests on the old engines. Looking forward to you doing the 300 Ford Six soon!

Sounded better with the cast iron manifold. Love to see the aftermarket 2 outlet cast iron Felton manifold on this engine.

This is a wicked idea. There is sooooooooooo much potential in domestic inline sixes !!! I want to see the big four with mods like cams , intakes, stroker kits, boooooooooooooost !!!!!! I can only imagine what a Jeep 4.0 can do with 18 psi .....no one cares about a 2jz when you make 600 ftlbs of torque at 3500 rpm 👹😈🙉💩

Lol, answers to all the questions no one ever had. I felt obligated to watch the video anyway though, considering how much work you put into it. I did find it somewhat interesting, or maybe more *puzzling* than an anything else, that the four barrel made more power, while still breathing through that incredibly abrupt transition into the little one barrel intake office.

Loved the video. Just pitching in my two cents. I would have built a set up similar to the 53 Corvettes, dual carb, duel exhaust.

Sounds like the 2jz. Kept waiting for the boost to come in. Gonna be nice with boost on it. I'd definitely do a spring and cam change to get it spin up to at least 7k rpm. Should be able to mimic all the mods that's traditionally done on the jz engine's

That thing sounds nice. Very interesting stuff for not even being a v8 or big power.. yet.
