GMAC'S HORRIFIC WIPEOUT AT MAVERICK'S

I paddled out to Mavericks that day, surfed the bigger wave behind Gmac's..............Then I woke up!

That was epic... GMAC's new nickname should be "Skip."

The first wipe out was horrific. Surfers have died in less dangerous wipe outs.

Hey Garrett, I don't know if you remember me, but I was your neighbor when you and Ian were kids in Waialua. You guys would help me work on Porsches once in a while, because with your small hands you could reach places that I couldn't. I have been keeping an eye on you guys over the decades. I'm glad to see you are still riding waves. Keep it up! At seventy- one years old I'm still hang gliding Makapuu, enjoying life and having as much fun as I can get away with. Hang gliding is a thousand times more fun than surfing. I have ridden Sunset as big as it can be ridden, without towing in, so I know what I'm talking about. When you get home you should try it's sister sport Paragliding! You can be flying high within a couple of months. Picture the most perfect wave that you can imagine, then imagine yourself riding that imagined perfect wave, ALL DAY long if you wanted. That's a REALITY for hang glider and paraglider pilots. I've seen this wipe out on other video compilations but I wasn't sure who it was. Interesting to hear what the ramifications were and makes me wonder how many other wipe outs you see in a flash turn out to be months on the couch for the unlucky guy or girl. Big ups to anyone who paddles into a wave like that.

Having a 20 foot plus 1000's of tons of water flatten you like concrete and only hurt shoulder, Bless him.

Dislocations are horrible, you don’t even feel the moment it happens..... it’s when you surface that the pain suddenly hits you....

Seen days like that... when the tide is right and the wind blowing offshore...you can't make the drop, and you can't get away. I've been bounced off of coral reefs, and held under till I started to black out.... Good times....

Mavericks is a very strange wave with that bottom topography, which makes the wave undulate up and down and rapidly change over and over like a massive bucking bronco that refuses to be ridden. Bra! You are a legend!

how long are they underwater during a wipeout

dislocation or seperation? the first one you just pop back in but the second one (acromioclavicular joint separation) sucks and is common on shoulder impacts like this... I imagine wiping out coming down a steep face like that, at that speed, is like hitting the pavement coming of a motorcycle.

Did the floatation vest allow him to not penetrate the wave as well or was it just the speed of the fall? He really skipped more than most wipeouts I’ve seen

Mac is almost fearless. Stays in top shape always and can take poundings better than most. That was a nasty one.

There's no such thing as a 100% recovery after a dislocated shoulder.

There was a similar big wave wipeout in Hawaii recently where the surfer hit the water head first and ended up drowning, possibly because he burst his eardrum and couldn't find the water surface. The last thing anyone saw of him was his feet sticking out of the water.

Every time I see a major wipe out like this I think about what Gregg Noll's Mom told a TV reporter when he asked her if she was worried about Gregg wiping out when he surfed the big waves at Wiamea . She shook her head and said "No, it's just water."

There was no doubt in my mind when I broke my clavicle after falling on a rock. Just tapping it hard hurts. Could not imagine having a mountain of water crash on to me afterwards and maybe drowning.

To only have a dislocated shoulder after a liquid ton drops on you AFTER you hit water at over 30 mph.... Very lucky. On a side note, He's straight nuts.

Waves 9ft which is like 3.48 metres make me almost puke then strength of the wave is unbelievable but this. this is so overwhelming in strength and height

You can get a little better perspective on the speed and power of these waves. Especially between the first and second impact. I immediately thought of MF. Big Reward = Big Risk.

Thats not as bad as a 10 ft wipeout without the jetskis waiting . Extreme =no safety net which is most of the time for most surfers that have a crack at bigger waves

This rivals Cotton's Naza nightmare as the worst nonfatal wipeout ever. Only a handful of people on the planet could even survive that kind of beating. Even being the HEMEN both G-Mac and AC are they were both lucky. This is the EDGE of what is possible. RESPECT! PEACE!

He underestimated the power of Mavericks because he was surfing what he thought was the biggest most treacherous waves in Spain. He was wrong. I'm happy to see Garret was ok. He is a great surfer by anyone's standard's.
