GMC Acadia Shift To Park Fix 

You are a damn genius!! I was getting super pissed off that my Acadia started doing this. I have had to start/stop many times and was getting perturbed. I watched your video and basically just pulled up on the shifter and BAM she shut off. THANK YOU ! You probably saved me a chunk of change, for something I would have been overcharged on😊

Just did this today, took maybe 10 minutes. So far 7 for 7 on parks. Ours was occurring minimum 8 out of 10 times. This is worth the effort!

Hi Austin - That rod popping out which would prevent the button from depressing all the way is a concern, but that's not the real problem. However, I think that you are on the right track with this Shift to Park problem. The real problem is in the switch down in the shifter that indicates to the computer that the car is in Park. So the problem is the shift to park is intermittent, but it always manifests itself like this when it happens -- Depress the button, move the level to P, then take your hand off the shift and press the stop button to turn off the car. About 75% of the time, it's as expected, the engine is off and the car is too, and all is good. The other 25% of the time, the engine is off, but the car remains on and the car display says "Shift to Park". Here is the workaround, and it is soooo simple... - Do not turn the car back on - - Do not attempt to move the shift level out of Park - Grab the shifter knob with your right hand. Fully depress the shift knob release button, and let it snap back. Do this a few times, until the car senses that the car is in park, the message goes off and the car turns off. Thats all! Just squeeze the shift button a few times! By the way, this is just a workaround until you take the car to GM for the fix - GM has a service bulletin 19-NA-206 that describes the issue and their permanent solution.

Austin I have a 2017 GMC Acadia with this problem what I found that works is push the shifter in park and keep pushing it until you turn off engine it works. Till Iget GMC to do something.

As someone who took their GMC in for them to replace the harness as per the bulletin I can say that won't fix it. It lasted a month before doing it again however now its out of warranty. This fix which literally took 5 minutes instead of a week at the dealership did the trick.We will see if it lasts but if not I believe you might can shorten the rod very slightly to let it raise enough to disconnect without going too far to not work as intended.

You're partially right, the micro switch is the problem, it degrades overtime and become intermittent. Cycling it over and over by pushing the button will eventually allow the switch to close. But it has nothing to do with the button binding on the shifter. The only fix is to replace the micro switch, either by itself or with a whole assembly.

My 2019 Acadia is doing it now. It stranded my wife and kids an hour from our house. The dealership "fixed it" and said it was the computer. It just happened today, I pulled off the shifter and could not get it to work. I am going to have the dealership come and pick it up since it is under warranty still. If they can't fix it I guess I will trade the stupid thing in....to bad, we haven't had it a year yet!!

THANKS - Your 2 videos showed exactly what to do and how to do it. On the other video I mentioned using duct tape to hold the pin/shaft from sliding out. Time will tell if it works.

My Chevy Malibu has been doing this for past 2 weeks. I just brought car into dealer to be fixed. They have not called me back with estimate yet, but I think I may just try this "snapping work around" until I can see if GM will pay for this fix. It should be a RECALL! If I get no satisfaction from Dealer, I will contact the Attorney General in PA. I have had very good results when I have had to contact their office in the past with other issues (not car related). How much have people paid to have this fixed at dealership? Just trying to get a ballpark of what I may be looking at if I do decide to have them fix it.

My 2019 Acadia is now doing this and it is very aggravating. Taking it to the dealership tomorrow but not hopeful based on other comments.

I'm going to have to try something. Bought my 2017 Acadia new. Had it fixed under warranty in 12/18 when the problem first started. Think they replaced the shifter. Fixed lasted about 2 years. Happening again. Took it to the dealer. Replaced some kind of wire connection 3 weeks ago they said. Not under warranty. Guess what just started happening again a couple of days ago. :( It's too bad, because otherwise this vehicle has been very reliable.

GMC state that they do not know what is the root cause of the problem but it is obvious that you found out where is the problem. Have you contacted GMC to let them know so they can c ok me up with a permanent solution? My car is doing it now, they need to recall it and fix it.

If this doesn’t work The micro switch is usually the problem that’s down below the shifter there are other videos on it too also there is a hack on a video I saw too it also enables video to be displayed But that really sounds like it could be a safety issue though

Have you known of this happening and then other odd electrical things following? I got the shifter park air for a year and didn’t know what it was. Now I have issues where my whole dash lights up like a Christmas tree. And while I’m driving it will say I’m going zero. Air stops blowing cold. Then it works again an hour later .

My 2017 just started doing that shift to park once it’s in park, so we just push the shifter up a bit more and it goes off.

Seeing as it has a sensor that explicitly checks for that specific part, It would be nice if it would explicitly say release shifting button or something like that instead of shift to park which is what you’ve already done… 🤦

Dealership charged me for a new button and harness. Since mine is a 2019’ they charged me a $100 deductible on my “extended warranty.” I hope they have to eat it with this lawsuit and refund my money. Happened on a faulty clutch years ago with another car maker. Bad clutch and fly wheels. Dealer had to refund entire payment!
