Returning to gm_liminal_space to see what's been changed, and if it feels any different to experience it in VR. Sorry if the commentary is a little rough on this one, I started recording minutes after waking up, so I may have been a little inarticulate at times.

"...or if the other person is aware of You, and doesn't want to be found." In a map like this, where you're always worried something will pop out, or you'll see some creature, maybe YOU'RE the monster. You go door to door, searching every room, like You're hunting for someone, or something. The overturned chair looks like someone left in a hurry, because they did, they know you're hunting them, and they don't want to be caught.

That's what I was thinking while watching the Gm_Shambles, everybody ran off, why? Because a god has appeared randomly in their town, the god doesn't know why everybody's hiding, the god assumes something has attacked the town. There's plenty of evidence to that, broken doors, broken roofs, boarded up windows. The truth may just be that they want to keep you out. People are going to assume you've knocked down the doors and broke the roof

Those "water feature" liminal spaces really bring to mind for me the early Tomb Raider games. Their limited polygon count forced the developers to make the spaces out of large, extremely angular block shapes with flat textures. Yet, they would often attempt to depict ancient ruins and other once lived spaces using these assets, ones that also serve as areas to facilitate gameplay. So you get this weird effect of being in spaces that clearly allude to once being meant for human habitation and/or were formerly lived in by humans, but with none of the geometry it consists of being sensible for a human to exist in. You understand what it's _supposed_ to be, but the reality of what it _is_ is in direct opposition to that. And the "water feature" liminal spaces are just like that. You understand it's meant to be a decoration or perhaps a recreational area, but no human would ever construct one in this way, or would find its geometry sensible and useful. If anything, they seem to directly appose human habitation... while still being spaces clearly meant for humans.

The thing you mentioned around 10:45 about memory degradation being like a tape that is slowly being worn out each time it's played... Makes me instantly think about how Dementia works. Because it is exactly that... But much worse and usually only noticed when your really old too.

Maybe an aspect of liminal spaces as both a room and a transitioning room, are those kinds of rooms where, while you might stay in them for a while, like the office cubicle, you’ll spend a significant part of your day there, but never for longer than you need/want to be. I feel like that’s what a lot of the rooms have in common, the hubs/stations, locker rooms, store, hotel. All of them are permanent spaces/destinations, but you yourself are only there for a limited amount of time.

I'm so glad that someone else has articulated the odd memory thing that happens with vr. for me remembering a VR location is like remembering a dream and I think it largely has to do with how similar the experiences are; In my dreams I don't have all of my senses, i'm there obviously but i never feel wind or temperature and even touch. same thing with VR, i'm only in the space via sight so my brain only knows one way to rationalize that: a dream.

The space around the 25:30 mark reminds me of nightmares I used to have as a little kid. There would be no monster chasing me, and the area I was in wasn't particularly creepy in any way, almost exactly how the walls and floor looked, a plain, single color wall with a slightly worn out carpet, lit by humming fluorescents. What made this dream horrifying to my child brain was that after opening a door, I would just be led to the exact same area I was before, in an infinite cycle. Nothing past the next door stood out in any way to the one before, none of the lights would be damaged or flickering, no blemishes on the walls or carpet, and no furniture, just the exact same room over and over. I still have this sort of fear to this day, just waking up one day either in my bed or some random place, and opening the door only to be greeted to a room entirely identical to the one I was in before, in infinite repetition.

i would like to recommend a very weird and interesting game, its called NaissanceE, its about you being stuck inside a colossal structure with a brutalist architecture, that game even gives me some liminal space vibes, but its mostly because of the feeling of being alone there, it is basically all about "exploration" and travelling to the end, sometimes there is one puzzle here and there, and it can be ended in less than 3 hours, i believe this game is mostly focused on ambient and atmosphere.

4:14 I know exactly what you mean. I’ve had times where I watch a movie, go to sleep, and then dream that I’m in that movie. You’ve seen it once already when it wasn’t your POV, and now you see it again, and it _is_ your POV this time. It hits against something in your mind that tells you it’s familiar, that you’ve been here before. But as you look around, you know that you’ve never stepped foot in the space you’re in. Another way to put it is like memories from a past life. It’s uncannily familiar, familiarly foreign.

Whilst a liminal space is a transitional space, I think liminal spaces heavily utilise kenopsia, a feeling you get when something which is meant to be busy, a motorway full of cars or a mall empty, abandoned, it creeps you out and gives you a sense of dread.... Its present in every liminal space, a hotel or a library, which you'd expect to at least have some people browsing books or someone at reception, completely empty, as you know, most gmod maps unintentionally invoke this feeling anyways, even the base maps Garry himself coded in, like construct or flatgrass. A flat plain or a construct, meant to be full of props and people, completely empty, its why Gmod singleplayer freaks most people out, the lack of people disturbs you, and you might even expect something to pop out at you, your not afraid of being alone, your afraid of the opposite. Or, well, being alone because of some unforeseen tragedy that wiped out or at least caused humanity to migrate. In the case of this video, an empty train station, or an empty office, hell even the empty hotel, and a library if you could really call it that. Obviously though, adding something that makes it not quite right, like a weird roof in the otherwise open area, a strange and vague sign, only merely suggesting what happened here, a train station with no rails or trains. Plus the idea that you can never figure out what the room is, or is meant for. You get the idea, sorry if this was a huge rant type of thing, I just find it really really interesting.

Liminal spaces, these ones especially, feel like some crude and distorted interpretation of human civilisation produced by some external force with a very limited knowledge of human society, like the little safe room with the mattress-less bed and the tens of unfurnished hotel rooms, or the backrooms with the endless transitions between different rooms, yet never actually reaching a destination.

it would be a nice horror game concept that needs some sort of an advanced stalker NPC bot not just basic following you until he kills but has like 3 phases first phase is just following you everywhere and knows where you are, sometimes would even be right behind you but the second you turn his model just vanish, but he would creep behind you and it should have sound effect that messes with you mind, foot steps or something second phase would be it trying to actually kill you, but it will only do it if it manages to sneak behind you enough, get close enough behind you without you looking and then you just die. you can hear some effects and such. sometimes when you turn you might see it for a second before it vanishes watching you from a corner. the last phase is it just borderline hunting you but this time you have the chance to hit from it. like alien isolation type situation. he knows you are in some section of the map but doesn't know where exactly, it just rely on any noises you make, or you running or walking too fast. then it tries to narrow down your location and kill you directly. Like this map starts off putting you in the middle, nothing happens until you reach "the end" desk then you get to see inside the monitor that has a message that says "come back if you need me" at this point when you trigger this that limitless rooms area gets unlocked along with other sections at this point the first phase of the stalker is activated, you are now just meant to search around more and explore the map. he is somewhere but stalking you. you reach the limitless desk area and now in one of the rooms you find a message in the wall with splattered ink that has some message that would be the game Q to trigger the second phase of the talker. in the limitless desk area now you will hear footsteps which depends on the player thinking should at some point connect the dots and understand that now you need that computer that told him "come back when you need me" the player objective now is to go all the way back to that desk while there is something waiting enough to kill him. When the playr manages to reach the computer, it basically just unlocks some hidden drawer or some chest that has a dagger or some sort of weapon like a knife. with the message that says "find the essence of it" which should be somewhere at this area at 30:33 but some extra room that has the stalker there doing nothing, just eyes closed and "sleeping" (mind you the whole time you are trying to "reach" that area difference version of it is still talking you waiting for you not watching your back enough to kill you until you reach this area) you st*b it with the weapon given by the "the end " desk and it basically wakes up and then falls on the ground after it's eyes glow. now the second you step back inside this area 31:40 you hear a sound from it, maybe a scream, maybe horror noise, something. which means now the last phase is triggered. it's now manually haunting you. you can't kill it, it's just stalking you to finish you off. now you need to find a way to basically just reach this area 34:15, avoiding the stalker your way out. I think it would be cool if the stalker would follow you outside but just starts burning because it's not allowed to live. and some the end text appear that you beat the level or something. I would love to try a game like this. it's simple enough I guess, not complicated and could fit in GMOD or something. or this is all just some terrible idea, i don't know.

Man imagine playing this with one or maybe two other people in VR. You don't have any comms or anything and the games drops you on opposite sides of the map, so you both wonder around building that uneasiness until you eventually see each other. I would probably scream

I think the creepiest part about liminal spaces like this is that it feels so lonely. Like looking into the room with all the cubicles and seeing that it is an area where people would be but theres literally nobody there. It just feels wrong

33:55 if I remember correctly, there is a human skull sitting on the glowing shelf with all of the cans. unless it was removed in an update? I don't know. I haven't had Gmod installed in a long time but all of these cool maps are making me want to install again. I mentioned the skull in the comments the last time you visited this map but to be fair, like this time, I am a bit late

Another lovely video, I've been watching quite a few of them, really well-made. To be honest I can often relate to the idea of trying to, but being unable to properly convey something. What is it about the Source engine that lends itself so well to creating abandoned or surreal spaces? There's this odd 'look' that feels almost remarkably linked to source engine maps, you can recognise it. Even large, flat surfaces have detail and texture, the lighting, something about it. Some games have a 'too-clean' look to them, even with visual variety and details.

I never heard of bernhards door or really even thought about it but my childhood home was a old crappy 1 room farm house from the 20's that had several additions just poorly slapped on to it over time so I had like 3-4 false back doors that went straight into wall insulation or just literally nothing but space between the walls so they were always blocked off by shelves or something. Actually in retrospect it was a creepy little house

Imagine being trapped in that 'the end' library and you typed in "the end" then pressed enter and everything turned black and you could no longer feel anything smell anything see anything or even move. It erased reality you would no longer exist

You shouldn't try to understand liminal spaces, they're obviously randomly inspired by the places in our subconcious and they're not meant to make any sense nor directly resemble an actual place. "Don't try to understand it, feel it." -Tenet

god this map is so weirdly comfy at parts. that library, the stone tunnel, the greenhouse, the parking garage, the outdoor area, the train station…i could relax in one of those clear-water pools for hours. there’s just so much variety here. this map really has it all. also, for convenience: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UXUz9M184Yc.html

Hey, Mr. Librarian, I don't know if you'd be keen on this, but Radiation Hazard was running a horror mapping competition, and I entered a map that took a lot of inspiration from your work, and shlup's liminal map. While it might not work well in VR, I would be honored if you played my map, and maybe the other maps as well, and gave your thoughts on them. I don't know any other youtuber that can analyze a horror environment quite like you do.

liminal spaces are like if aliens made a roach motel for humans. It's a crude shell of our civilization and culture just meant to trap us there.

Some of my dreams make no sense. But most things in my dream seem realistic. Like if you press a button it does the same thing every time. Or if you look at words and look away, the words don’t change. Time goes by real time. People interact with you as if they are real. It is… strange… and other dreams just don’t make sense at all…
