Agreed. Extra class Ham here also. I find his videos to be funny, yet informative, as I'm relatively new to GMRS. I look at GMRS as yet another opportunity to learn more about radio science, propagation, etc., but also have fun while doing it. I can do that with both Ham and GMRS, but sometimes I like the informal and laid back nature of GMRS.

I just ordered a GMRS radio and will get my license for that too. I just love the radio hobby and meeting folks.

@@theapplecalypse It would probably take an administrator of the FCC site a whopping 2 minutes to type a 35 in place of a 70 in their system. Why for the love of Xenu don't they do it? Because GMRS has become more popular and people are buying the licenses at the price gouging of $70. When it slows down, they'll probably lower it to encourage more people to pay. Regardless of whether you wait or not, the price will still be too high.

We (Jamaican Caves Organisation) use GMRS radios here in Jamaica for communicating from top to bottom of deep shafts (>100m). The wavelength is short enough that it bounces off the walls, even around corners, giving pretty good range. When we bought them, we just had to pay a fairly small amount for a permit. No mention of call signs, but as we've never heard anyone else on frequency on the surface, doesn't make much difference.

Based on my own research and your videos and great advice, went ahead and ordered the Wouxun KG-935G GMRS Two Way Radio with the Nagoya NA-771G antenna from the affiliate link you provided (let them know your channel sent me to them). Also ordered the BaoFeng UV-5X (UV-5G) phones to use for our family. Excellent review, thanks Randy. This is the go-to video for anyone who wants a good basic intro to GMRS radio. BTW I am an amateur radio operator (a ham) who happens to think that GMRS is yet another valuable tool in our communications bag. Talking on the radio, any radio, is cool. If you are looking for a cost-effective comms method for you and your family, GMRS is an excellent service for this. No test, just the license. We have tons of GMRS repeaters here in central Jersey. GMRS - it's not just a thing, it's a good thing. Regards, WA2JOE Joe.

Been looking at getting a GMRS radio for some now. Many Jeep clubs and Jeep Jamboree now requires it on their adventures and of course there is the safety aspect when solo overlanding. Your humor was appreciated and actually quite helpful. Hopefully Chuck will find work and maybe stop amusin' himself by abusin' himself, and his folks will be able to use the basement for storage.

Thanks for the info, Randy. I live in Canada, where no licence is needed to use GMRS, but it is limited to 2 W of transmission power, and no repeaters are allowed. Do you know if it is legal to use Q-codes from amateur radio (e.g. QTH, QRP, QRO) on GMRS/FRS?
@TheNotaRubicon
@TheNotaRubicon 2 года назад
In the U.S. you can use any kind of codes you want on GMRS.. But be careful, because if you do, everyone will laugh at you. GMRS is meant for normal people talking normally.

I just want to know how you get your radios in the background to light up and flicker continuously. It's mesmerizing.

Just got the GMRS license today. The cost was now $35. Good job on the videos. I have enjoyed them. As a reminder, if you have to tell people you're one of the cool kids, then you're not a cool kid.

I passed my GMRS test and a proud new licensed operator. The exam (navigating the FCC website) took about an hour to complete. Thank you for all you do. I credit your video for my success.

Nice idea on swinging around the UV5R antenna. Maybe it'll keep the sad hams away since now the UV5R has yet another versatile use as a weapon if they become angry again. The UV5R is no doubt the most versatile HT ever.

Thanks for the video Randy. So as I was watching and thinking about repeaters I had a novel thought....does not happen often......If a repeater is made from a receiver and a transmitter, does the receiver need to be a GMRS approved radio....I mean you can receiver GMRS legally on any radio...but does the receiver on a GMRS repeater need to be an FCC approved GMRS radio....It is sort of blowing my mind......69, Steve
@TheNotaRubicon
@TheNotaRubicon 2 года назад
I am neither a lawyer, nor an FCC rules expert, but based on my understanding, any radio can receive anything, however the _transmitter_ is supposed to be FCC Part 95 Type Accepted...

@@TheNotaRubicon This is what I was thinking too.....so the "best ham radio in the world"....the UV-5R could receiver while a UV-5X transmitted on a simple GMRS 5 Watt repeater using a ($46 on Ebay) Surecome SR-328 controller to connect the two. A legal GMRS repeater could be built for under $100.....might make a good future video? However by the time you did it right and bought a duplexer, a Retevis RT97 ($369 on Amazon) would likely be a better, more elegant choice. Anyway love your channel. 69 again, Steve

Thank you for the videos Randy. Bought my double priced licence and some radios so I am well on my way to being a cool kid and a RU-vid GMRS expert. Just curious how the FCC knows if you are a FRS user, a licenced GMRS user, or a rule breaker on a UV5R? Is Uncle Sam just playing us?

The FCC can quickly triangulate on the rule breakers by using the wreckage of the crashed aircraft surrounding them. Don't be that guy!

Thank you for helping me be a “cool kid”. I have been an amateur radio operator for over 30 years and gmrs is new for me. I received my gmrs call sign today. We have an emergency communication and preparedness program with our area and church and trying to help members with communication if don’t want to become a ham. Gmrs may be way for them. Thanks

I applied for my GMRS License March 30th still have not gotten it. Was 70.00 a few days ago. Apparently they are having billing issues with their system so I'm being patient. I'm a new cool kid. I bought Midland 2 way for camping, in a week I will be buying the GMRS radio. Excited! Still studying for Technician license.
