A discussion for the HAM radio operators on the importance of adhering to the GMRS channel plan while in the GMRS world and making sure our radios are set up correctly. * BIG HINT * - Don't rely on CHIRP to install the channels for you. They will not match the channel plan on these newer GMRS radios.

Very glad to see you going down this road. As a Ares/Races member, I know there are not enough of us for a major emergency. GMRS has allowed many responsible people to also participate in EMCOMM. We have 3 good GMRS repeaters in our area and hams conduct a weekly GMRS net. The Hams in my area are very welcoming of the GMRS folks and support that GMRS operators bring to the table. Just ordered a KG-935G radio. I already have a few cheaper GMRS radios, but I appreciate a good receiver and more features. I'm the County CERT Commander, so I want the best handheld possible. Not a radio snob, just like quality and performance. There are differences between the two services. People need to know about them. Thanks Scott, well done !

I am not a Ham radio operator, but I would want to know the frequency. I actually got my license and call sign for GMRS before I even owned a radio. Let's just say I got my arm twisted by an old timer - and got played the entire time.. So fast forward nearly two weeks later, he finally decides to swing by and look things over, then he finally turns around back at me and says "you know this is a bit similar to ham?" and simply smiles. He'll be back to help me with proper etiquette, but I'm really not sure if I should trust him again lol ...

Thank you for that explanation specially for the Ham radio people. No offences, but Ham radio licence people think they are gods always looks down to GMRS lic people. With that said well done video. I am just started studying for my Technical ham license and was wondering if you can setup regular VHF and UHF frequencies in a GMRS radio to listen and monitor?

Yes. I've been able to on all of the programmable ones that I've handled. That would include the Wouxun KG-935G and KG-UV9G, Baofeng UV-9G, BTech GMRS Pro and Radioddity GM-30.

Why is it that 2 meter repeater has over 40 miles and gmrs repeater don't?

Also,... It is generally believed that UHF dosent have the range of VHS (GMRS dosent go as far as 2 meter ham under same power)

@@ZiggZagg11 You also have to take into account the height of the repeater above the rest of the terrain. In practice, the range of the VHF repeaters is greater, but the 40 miles you are talking about is just that repeater. With line of sight between the repeater and your radio, 100 miles would not be a stretch.
