GMRS Is NOT A Hobby! Difference Between Ham Radio & GMRS - Amateur Radio Vs. GMRS

In this video I explain some of the differences between GMRS and ham radio. I talk about the intended usage of GMRS and how it is different from amateur radio, and how "ham radio" is a hobby, but GMRS is not a hobby. I also discuss how to spot a ham-radio operator trying to use their GMRS radio like ham, and what normal GMRS users can to do stop them.

For me GMRS is my reliable communications with friends/neighbors and home base family in my secluded area where cell coverage is spotty at best and non-existent down in the hollers... a lifeline to help should this old 74-year-old get hisself into a fix he can't get out of as I putter around the homeplace or while riding the trails around here. Spent 34 years as a big city cop where the radio was my lifeline. Still is on the mountain.
@bendeleted9155
@bendeleted9155 29 дней назад
Exactly. My 80-year-old mom actually asked me how will we communicate in an emergency, after AT&T went down, so I set her up with GMRS. We have a good repeater with backup power that will last long enough to tell her I am on my way or meet me halfway, etc. Thanks for your service on the mean streets. Congrats an 74 years too.

Radio dork here. Radio is my hobby. But GMRS is the working side of my hobby. It’s way more user friendly and easier to get into than ham. I always advise potential future radio dorks to start with GMRS then maybe move on to ham. So far no one I have told this too has gotten their ham license but use GMRS every day. I’ve made a bunch of friends on my favorite GMRS repeater and we even started monthly meetings. Kinda like a club some would say. From my first Boofwang to my latest Yeasu, I owe it ALL to Randy. (I am also a ham now, but a happy one)

funny thing. we had a great GMRS repeater in out area, families and friends used it quite a bit. then they linked it statewide and then then the HAMS took it over even ran a net last on it that took forever. With that I have been a ham for a long time and enjoy both systems. But I recognize the difference, GMRS is talk around for family, friends etc and ham is a system for experimentation, long haul comm and emergency service. All enjoy both, stay in your lane and have fun. Or not.
@641northwestgeorgia
@641northwestgeorgia Месяц назад
Sounds like what happened here in Georgia. The repeater pair monopolists (at least they are in my part of the state, among other areas) decided they’re going to keep their two dozen linked repeaters going for now, and they cover parts of adjoining states as well. Oh yeah, and they use Zello. Since they’re the largest such org in the country, I suspect it won’t be long until they are forced to comply, much to the delight of many normal GMRS users such as myself.

I got "into" GMRS for 1 purposes. Where I live we lose power often in the winter months sometimes only for a few hours sometimes a few days. Since my cell connection relies on Wifi I loose the use of my cellphone. GMRS allows me to contact family a number of miles away in the event I need any assistance. I do not use it like the CB service or the Amateur radio service

1st, GMRS could be considered "ham radio light", if you're only comparing the cost of the equipment (GMRS $-$$ to ham $$$-$$$$). But it is true. I heard people on the ham repeaters just calling out, begging for someone to start a conversation. Checking your signal, sure, let me talk to you for a half hour while you're trying to set up your rig. But on the GMRS repeaters around me, it's mostly someone calling someone else directly, call sign to call sign, people that know each other. And yes, GMRS is more "utility", especially since your whole family can use it. I get together with the in-laws somewhere, I have GMRS radios to hand out. If there's a repeater nearby, conveniently my call sign is written on the radio for them to use. I find radio interesting and have both GMRS and ham. But the money that I would have used for that tri-band $1,200 ham radio, I've put towards my GMRS base station, antenna, and HT's. Why you ask? Because comms with my family trumps comms with strangers. Coincidently my GMRS base station can scan through important ham frequencies and other frequencies worth monitoring for information, but that's all I really need during an emergency from ham, to listen, and not SHTF emergency where rules don't apply, more like hurricanes. I've also been finding that "Happy Hams" usually posses a GMRS license as well. So keep up the good work explaining the confucularities with your ofactions Randy. Keep em coming.

@bendeleted9155

@@Mgoblu87 one good thing about it is GMRS radios can be so cheap now that you could buy a few and map them exactly like yours and hand them to family and friends that are close enough you can hit a common repeater or even go simplex. They won't necessarily get interested until they see a benefit firsthand. I've used radios my whole adult life out of necessity, but only recently got friends and family using them, in exactly that way. I can't get ANY of them interested in ham though 😂

Thank you so much for your channel. Every so often I think about getting a HAM license but then I think about it and realize I can't think of anyone I would want to talk to on it.... While with GMRS I got my license and I can just hand a family member a radio or something, or I can hand a friend an FRS radio and talk to them that way. I think that is my big issue with HAM radio, unless you got some buddies who are already deep into it.... there is just no way I am going to get any of my friends and such to go study and take that test. Plus if there ever was a real emergency I could just transmit on those HAM frequencies if I really needed to anyway for emergency reasons. Don't get me wrong, I get there are some use cases for HAM but honestly for the every day person who just wants to be able to talk to friends and family in any sort of useful way, I just got myself a really nice scanner, some GMRS radios [along with some FRS radios to compliment them] and a MURS just to see what the heck that is [plus my GMRS ones are unlocked anyway soo......] and it just fits in 95% of all practical uses, and that extra 5% is pretty much just edge cases or stuff only radio Karens [cough often HAM guys cough] And you were the one that showed me the truth! Look, I am not saying there are not cases for HAM, but for most people.. well honestly there just are not over the alternatives. But for some people it is great and good on ya.

Another good vid Randy. GMRS plays an important role with our family & friends as we spend alot of time together fishing, hunting, camping, off-roading & more. Since early 70's, (up until 2020) CB's were our comms in the same outdoor activities we enjoy now and with many of our same family & friends with the addition of Kids and Grandkids that have come into into the mix. Now even our mid elementary school grandkids are on the radios in our outings. About the only time I connect with someone I may not know, is when I call for a radio check.

Well said! I use both ham and GMRS. Ham on HF frequencies is a “hobby” with roots in electronics tinkering for making random contacts to inconsistent locations. Ham on UHF/VHF frequencies is mostly local line of sight contacts to sad or happy hams unless using digital modes (another topic). GMRS is mostly more purpose driven for local line of sight communication.

The sucky part of FRS and GRMS is how many people are on the radios so you have to bounce around channels to try and find something where it's open but anywhere around San Bernardino seems to have a ton of people...

To sum it up gmrs is a workhorse. Ham is a hobby but could be a workhorse if segments of it were allowed to operate similar to gmrs especially on VHF. I know there is business VHF, but there should be a gmrs segment of VHF. I know, HF is so variable that it doesn't fit with that model but they make the general and especially extra class tests so unnecessarily difficult that it seems designed to keep newcomers out. It's like asking a Private pilot to become an airline transport pilot just because they are interested in flying. The two aren't very related

CB is the way to go. It was originally intended to serve the same purpose as GMRS is today. But they used the wrong frequencies for that. Unlike the UHF frequencies used for GMRS, which are line of sight only, and very limited in range, CB frequencies are in the HF band. You can talk around the world with CB, or 11 meters as it is commonly known among hobbyists. It's hit or miss, but that is part of the fun. In fact, CB, or 11 meters, is right smack dab in between the 10 meter and 12 meter ham bands. So, if you have a CB, or 11 meter, radio with an RF output of at least 100 watts, and a good antenna, you can do a lot of what hams can do, and you can do it without a license, or a call sign, or following any rules. No, you don't have access to the crazy amount of frequencies and bands that hams have, but the one band you do have is in a really good spot, frequency wise. HF frequencies are not line of sight. They bounce off the ionosphere, and can come back down hundreds or thousands of miles away, depending on conditions. I live in the southwestern U.S., and I have made hundreds of contacts across the Pacific, from New Zealand to Japan, and everywhere in between. I have had a technician class ham license since 1988, and a general class ham license since 2009. But I have gotten tired of all the formalities and rules and regulations that go with ham radio. I do still use it once in a while, but I have gotten more enjoyment out of 11 meters (CB) and made just as many contacts as I did on the ham bands. I'm talking about SSB here, not AM or FM. GMRS would be more like the UHF and VHF 2 meter and 70cm FM ham bands, which really only work for short distances unless you use a repeater. But, unlike GMRS, ham repeaters CAN be linked together. I have access to a ham repeater network that allows me to talk across most of three states. But of course, you have to use your call sign and follow the rules. And no, I am not a troublemaker on the radio. I just like having a bit more anonymity.

I too am a ham and I enjoy using the devils band. I just got the president McKinley just to use on ssb. Fun not to have a lot of rules. Channel 19 am is always full of interesting characters too !

I have a small CB radio that I turn on every once in a while. I always hear the craziest shit on there. Especially on Channel 6 around midnight. Last time I was listening I heard some drunken Bayou fella ranting about his neighbors.

Thank you for the summary - most opinions I’ve heard, dismiss CB as a dying platform mostly for business communication

Question: What is the use of the programmed frequencies on a new BF-17H Pro GPS?? I have deleted mine and loaded GMRS channels.

The best part of the old hams? As they kick off, I buy their gear for pennies on the dollar. Let em continue moaning and complaining. I'll be at their house .. consoling the sad. And TAKING THAT GEAR!

All I know is the 2 UV-50X2s, the UV-25X4 and 90% of the Baofengs I bought the last few months all work on HAM and GMRS frequencies. God Bless America! I got my GMRS permission slip but after listening to HAM clubs take roll twice a week for an hour I don't know. I probably will anyway.

It's brutal listening to drills. "Work with me people! I say the name and address, you write it down, and read it back. Write last name first, first name last, then the address. Ok, from the top, Let's try again everyone.
