Hyprland dev here. Runtime-disabling xwayland as opposed to compile-time disabling. You can compile Hyprland without xwayland, or you can disable it, at runtime, with the config option. "independent" compositor: Independent as in standalone, and developed independently of other entities: KDE's kwin is developed as a DE, same for Gnome, wlroots compositors depend on wlroots. Furthermore, I'd argue that Hyprland is in many ways more advanced than Mutter for example, as most of a DEs complexity comes from the app suite, (because there are so many apps and features in them) not the core compositor. Hyprland supports way more stuff (in window management, effects, protocols etc) than bare Mutter.
Maybe I should apply for Gnome, I have the longest experience and I have done it all :) :) I have 55 years of experience! I'm almost 80 and I worked as computer-prototype tester; software developer; chief architect; department manager and I hobby as Linux user since 2008 and as Gnome user since 2018.
@@MiningForPies nothing he probably uses an Ubuntu based distros and claims Ubuntu is bad while piggybacking off canonicals paid for servers and man hours into making Ubuntu work better. Lol they are a funny bunch
Michael Bruh! 100% Throw your hat in for the Gnome gig. You would be great! You could even use the position to interview interesting people and in Tunnell build partnerships growing Gnome. Win Win. Gnome needs a Linux Loving Leader The community NEEDs Michael Tunnell. Don't let this pass you by, best of luck. Cheers!!
Linux is getting better imo for playing Steam games Microsoft is the only reason a lot of people aren't switching to Linux because they're too afraid to or there's Windows locked software preventing them to move to Linux because it's bound to Windows only. Most of the game mods I am playing will work on Linux but there's Windows only mods preventing me from officially switching but at this point I am about to say if they don't support Linux why should I support them? I think Microsoft does this on purpose to BAIT people into staying on Windows so they can control their computers claiming they own it I am switching to Linux due to how unethical Microsoft has become in policy agreements at least with Linux you don't really have a policy and you can actually claim your computer as yours and they can't trespass into YOUR computer.
Linux has DOSBox and staging. Between that, Proton, and Wine, Linux has far more compatibility from DOS to 16-bit, 32-bit, up to modern 64-bit games and apps. If you actually have some game or app from Win 3.11, chances are you'll get it working on Wine with a few tweaks. Or if you're code savvy, you might be able to just use the source code and make a package for the distro you are using. There's plenty of dev tools on Linuxto do it if you really wanted to.
I ignored Clem's Snapshot admonishment on my Chromebook because there wasn't room. I just jumped in and it updated perfectly. Worst case, I'd have to reinstall and tweak everything. Of course I back up all my data somewhere else, and on an SD card in the 'Book. Now if Mint had a KDE desktop, life would be perfect.
The second permission dialog is for the permission for access to the file, so it still checks out. I guess Ubuntu should've just posted a video instead of a GIF.
Yea, I didn’t notice the accessing part because it’s a bit rushed. There’s also an art to doing demos, for example moving and interacting at a speed that you normally interact with your system is bad when recording because it doesn’t give enough time for a viewer who is unfamiliar with what’s happening. It’s best to slow down to about 35% as normal so the recording is more clear to the uninitiated
The snap permission system is what I wanted out of xdg-portal. I've kept moaning and complaining about app defaults because they just often fall to the too restricted side when it has negative impact on the default experience of layperson newbies. I wouldn't have any complaints if there is a clear dialogue box that would allow users to change it easily a la phone permissions.
Yeah, that's what I thought the portals were for in the first place. File pickers, screen sharing, and camera can have implicit permission to resources as the user selects it, but other things like firewall or usb device need permissions. Flatseal was only ever supposed to be a bandaid while we added permissions, but it seems like some people don't understand that.
So much this. If something uses a snap and doesn't function in that OS by default, its broken. This is why I now have an annoying collection of flatpaks and app images, or bypassed apt some other way. This is even less ideal for security but atleast if I need a program, I know it will function.
Snap runtime permissiona are game changer imho. I remember when android had juat permissions and torch apps requiring your location. After runtime permissions the problem got solved
I agree this will be a good improvement for Snap users for sure. Though Android still has some stupid permissions issues because apps that have no need for location can still request it with no review. It’s 100x better than before but Android still has a weak permissions structure in my opinion
Been using Hyprland for a year and a half as a daily driver and I'm not leaving it in the foreseeable future. I think what he means by "independent" is that they ditched wl-roots and re-wrote Hyprland with their own library called Aquamarine since version 0.42.0. Also, Hyprland has its own ecosystem, hyprpm, hyprcursor, hyprpaper, hyprlock, hypridle...
You mean for the permissions? The idea is for users to not be tricked by bad actors to take more permissions than needed. This does something similar to how Android pops up details to agree to when you install an app from the play store
obsidian definitely not a hacking tool, but it's a great tool to use when hacking. i personally like cherry tree, but i could see why someone would want to use obsidian
I though Snap permissions was already included in 24.04 until I realized it wasn't the case. There is some form of control, but it's very limited. If new feature will expand and ease up control, it would improve experience tremendously. And hopefully this means a better support for Snaps. Lazy devs is the biggest problem with Snaps.
"why is this asking multiple times?" iT's LiNUx sEcUriTy, it'S kEePiNg yOu sAfE, if YoU don'T liKE it you cAn GO BaCk tO WiNdoWs ...that's what you'd be told on the Linux subreddits 😂
14:14 IDK about responsabilities... but they shouldn't complain about other distros if they ship your defaults... if they don't like their defaults, that's on them XD
I think that Playtron will flop, and I only hope that during their lifetime they will create enough opportunities for linux gaming people and companies.
kali is debian, debian is fine to run as a daily driver. The selection of tools in the repository doesn't dictate that it is any less viable to be used however you want, stop spreading this bullshit
Debian is fine as a daily driver with a few changes after install but it’s funny to claim Debian is fine and therefore Kali is fine. That’s not how derivatives work. Kali used to be root only for 99% of its existence and they only fairly recently changed that. Kali is made for offensive security not defense. This makes it a bad idea for anyone who doesn’t know what they are doing. Your argument doesn’t change that at all.
