Man, I could listen Dom talking about bike design all day. Great looking bike!

How convenient that this video posted. My Faran 2.0 was just delivered to me here in the U.S. yesterday. It replaced a 2019 Specialized Diverge and wow, Dom is an incredible bike designer! I hated babying my carbon Diverge so wanted something that would last longer and take a bit more abuse. When the box was delivered, I was shocked at how light it was. After installing the front wheel and handlebars, it was ready to ride. I ordered the bike in size 54T with GRX 800, 650B Hope wheels/ headset and WTB Byways which came to $2400USD. I dare you to find a better spec'd bike for this price. First I weighed it and with pedals, and it came out to 9.9kg. For a steel bike, I was very happy about that. I took it for a 12 mile shakedown ride today and couldn't believe how lively it was. It's been quite some time since I had a short trail bike and with 700c wheels and 38c Panaracer slicks, this felt like a proper road bike just as Dom has said. Coming from a carbon bike, I couldn't believe how quiet it rides. Every crack and bump is silent and I seemed to sneak up on people walking on the paved canal paths I was riding on. I originally had a deposit on the Secan, but when the Faran 2.0 was unveiled, I switched my deposit on it instead. If the Secan had fork mounts for cages, I probably would've stayed with it, but I think the Faran 2.0 is pretty much future-proof and I don't have to be afraid of it getting damaged on the plane when flying it to Europe for touring. This will be my only bike so with 650B and 700c wheels, it'll do everything I need a bike to do for me for years to come; 650B for gravel riding/ bikepacking and 700c for audaxing, road touring. Something not mentioned, but i think should be noted is that the rear derailleur hanger is part of the frame. I didn't know that was a thing so I was pleasantly surprised that I don't have to carry a spare on cycling tours. If it gets bent, it can be hammered back into place since it's also made of steel. Thank you Dom and Fairlight!!!

I haven't seen an explanation about the rear derailleur hanger in DESIGN NOTES, and it leaves me wondering how good of the decision it is, considering that breakable and replaceable hangers were created to avoid frame getting damaged
@antont462
@antont462 3 года назад
And I feel like during the trip rebending and properly realigning the hanger can be much harder than just replacing it with spare one

This post is exactly why I'm selling my Poseidon redwood and my 10-year-old specialized allez elite for the Faran 2.0. Because it literally does both of the things I use those two bikes for. The Poseidon is a great bike, but it's meant for people that are always pointing the bike downhill.. it's not particularly comfortable on long bike packing trips. For whatever reason, I just can't get the bike to fit right even with a professional fitting session. And it's an aluminum fork and frame, but it's somehow ~3 pounds heavier than the Faran 2.0.. In contrast my specialized allez elite came from the Lance Armstrong erra where everybody was trying to get their bikes to weigh less than a feather so it's not particularly comfortable off the pavement. Even though when it's on the pavement, it's one of the most comfortable bikes I've rode to date. But the fact I may be able to replace both of them with a steel bike that is racy but also considered a touring bike, it is also light and supple but also built to do a number of different riding styles is simply insane.

Totally agree wit the rear blinker position. I have moved mine from the underside of my brookes saddle due to having a seat bag, to the rear of the rack, but I had to make a special bracket for it. I now have a small LED on the rear stay, but sometimes catch it with my heel, so it has been moved right back, but has limited room! Good Ideas incorporating a bracket!

Lucky enough to have a MK1 Strael that I adore. Added the Secan early this year which is just as wonderful and is a superb winter bike. Man oh man, n+1 is shouting "Faran"!!!!

Looks like a very nice all-purpose bike. I'm looking at the Faran 2.5. Just one question: would a back-rack for 2 paniers fit well on this bike?

What about E.D. coating? If the frame should last, why isn't it internal protected or did I miss something? All the american steel frames like surly allcity soma are ED coated nowadays... Is there a reason technically besides cost?

I find it interesting that he says that it may last ten years. I thought a steel frame would last almost indefinitely, considering how many used steel roadbikes from the 80s are available for sale in all kinds of places. Given, that those roadbike-frames seem to use much thinner tubing than the faran 2.0, riding one of those old bikes is technically equivalent to suicide and selling them is like murder :-D
@cenkaytekin

Very true! If taken care properly, it will last your lifetime without issues. One very important thing is internal rust protection on steel frames. Spray them with anti-rust sprays that you can buy for cars and you will never see any rust whatsoever. Grease parts, clean regulery, wax the frame, etc..the list goes on. It will last. I have several steel frames and I have been using them for 10 years in all sorts of weather in Norway and I have zero rust on them. Components go through upgrades of course but the frameset remains in top notch condition. Paint wears out over time but you can always get it repainted again.

Can you make your content accessible by formatting the auto captioning into closed captioning? It is extremely hard to enjoy your content having to keep concentration on the auto captioning and not be able to see your content properly sadly, it’s also why most of us don’t subscribed.

i have a 2016 Specialized Diverge, been riding it for last 4 years but since the frame should be bigger (i have a 56 and should be 58 since i'm 1,87m with 90 inseam leg), i've been searching for a new bike... i've look at Ribbles Adventure 725 (no longer available), Rondos Bogan, Bombtrack HOOK Ext, Bombtrack Beyound 2, Fairlight Secan and Fairlight Faran... i'm exausted with all the options... nowadays i'm stuck between Bombtrack HOOK Ext, Bombtrack Beyound 2, Fairlight Secan and Fairlight Faran! any thougts on this bikes? > i'm NOT looking for racing, i'm looking for comfort > i'm doing 70% tarmac 30% dirt/rocks/sand/single track > wanna try a 1x drivetrain > looking for my first 100km ride, not there yet > looking for reliance and comfort > i'm for a value range for 2.500€ max!!!! > what about on availability on this bikes? i think that with the brexit english imports may have raised on value is this correct? Thnx all

First off: the price of the frameset went up, Faran 2.0 used to be 899 and is 940 now. That being said, the prices for EU went up with another 10% at Fairchild, they motivate this with increased logistic effort or something. I was poised to put a deposit on a Faran, now I'll start looking at custom made options, as there are a few young builders around Europe, and I actually feel rather good paying for custom. There is a new pricelist for EU with netto prices, add up your local vat and also DHL, 50 for the frame, 130 for a fully built bike, VAT on bike+logistics will be collected by DHL in your country. You'll probably be better off to buy one in UK, tour it around for a while, maybe for LEL, and bring it home with you... *PS: i still love the Faran,* it just became _a bit too expensive for me_ now...
