Although the exact origins are unknown, many of these crosses and religious icons appeared toward the end of the 19th century. What do you think of this mysterious finding?

National Geographic After Polish failed November uprising aganist Tsardom of Russia in 1831 people started to bring these crosses at the hill, although northern Lithuania was a area where polish and russian forces had a lot of encounters, many of the crosses there are in polish tho too.

In 1831 and 1863 there were big rebellions in Siauliai area. A lot of rebells were killed and buried in several areas in secret mass graves so their relatives couldn't visit their graves. Hill of Crosses could have been one of those mass graves where relatives brought crosses. Then other people followed to show solidarity.

The fact that it was rebuilt many times probably shows how strong their faith is. For whatever reason, this seems like an interesting site, with some shrouded mystery. Thanks National Geographic for sharing.

Azliana Lyana It is not, most of the Lithuanians are not even religious.
@Cebuana59

Most are not religious, but those who are have very strong faith. Christianity started as an underground religion.
@gorillaguerillaDK
@gorillaguerillaDK 6 лет назад
Cebuana59 No it didn't - it was in fact very much out in the open. But the Christians unwillingness to accept the existence of other gods than their own god lead to them having confrontations with the legislators serving Rome! Rome had a large tolerance towards other religions as long as they accepted the existence of other gods. As Christians refused to do so, it put them at odds with Rome and they were looked down upon. But the story about Christians being severely persecuted by Rome is a myth. In fact, the periods where Christians really has been persecuted and forced "underground" was when other Christians started going after the sects of early Christians they considered to be heretics!
@someonewhosupportukraine

Azliana Lyana here are the hopes and desires of people. Belief that everything will be fine. people come here asking for a healthy child to be born in order to have a hard operation, to recover from cancer, etc. It gives people hope. Some have said that doctors could not promise that they would survive a year for a person with stage 4 cancer. He got up. For other doctors, the child will be born and born healthy. The same place is the icon of the Holy Spirit in Vilnius (the Gates of Dawn), and it is recognized both by Catholics and Orthodox and Judaism. There, too, people come to life, and many managed to get up.

Lithuanians, from whom I am descended, were among the last Europeans to adopt Christianity. And now, may be the last to give it up? as Europe appears to be more and more secular these days, and is tending to treat all religions as inconvenient fantasies.

Sad to think so many people believe God accepts this. What a terrible way to remember what His Son gave for mankind. If someone took bullet to save your life, would you need an image of a gun to remind you of his sacrifice?

@joshsfishroom7702
@joshsfishroom7702 6 лет назад
Žymantė Saveraitė maybe that’s true. But let’s imagine this. If my closest surviving friends and family would have been offended, would I want people to do it in hundreds of years? It’s unthinkable that Mary and Jesus Apostles wore crosses. Why should we? The thing to consider as well is Jesus and God are watching down from Heaven, as people worship an idol after specifically saying in the Bible that this was wrong. Anyone who wears a cross or bows down to one or even hangs one on the wall is doing something that makes God and His Son unhappy. Thanks very much for your reply. I enjoy discussing these types of things.
