Liz Lee I think what Sparky said rings true. Alot of people saw Atticus the same way Scout saw him. He was such a great upright man. He didn't just defend Tom legally, he was standing between him and lynch mob, so for him to sit as what is basically a Klan meeting is a kick in the gut

***** I think it's 100% fallacious to think a man who has such principle in terms of justice who believes everyone deserves legal protection, and a fair and even handed justice system, could be the same racist character in this book. Yeah people can change, Atticus could have gone senile, or he could have had an event happen to him that caused him to hate black people, but it doesn't change the fact that without some proper reasoning such different world views are near incompatible. The Atticus Finch of To Kill A Mocking Bird would have to have drastic events happen to him to change him to one in this new book.

But we’re all human at the end of the day. It proves the point of this book and this video explaining it. Scout saw her dad as the greatest person alive when she was little, just to grow up and realize his point of view was flawed and wrong over time. I’d rather know what side a celebrity, news host, speaker, entertainer, and the like stand on, than live my whole life believing they’re something else. The only ones that get angry about it are the people that are racist, bigoted, homophobic, “and the like” themselves.

I haven't read "To Kill a Mocking Bird" in a long time, but Atticus was nothing like how he is portrayed in "Go Set a Watchman". I really don't want this book to be remembered since it really looks like a bad first draft that the author didn't want to see the light of day.

Nathaniel Hellman it is basically the first draft. she wrote this first, but in the original she kept making a lot of flashbacks to when scout was younger. Given the fact that some of the passages in the GSAW are word for word the same as TKAM and given the state of mind that Harper Lee is right now, I believe that she never meant to publish this and that this was done to get $

The thing is, if you go back and read it you can see that Atticus Finch was maybe a bit of a racist all along. He's a segregationist, everyone back then was. In the 30's, he was thought radical for simply believing a black man innocent of rape. He thinks everyone is equal under the law (separate, but equal). He is an upholder of the laws, but he doesn't want the laws to change. There's some telling lines in Mockingbird that get left out of the movie : “Cecil Jacobs asked me one time if Atticus was a Radical. When I asked Atticus, Atticus was so amused I was rather annoyed, but he said he wasn’t laughing at me. He said, ‘You tell Cecil I’m about as radical as Cotton Tom Heflin.’' (Tom Helfin was a senator and member of the Klan) Atticus was maybe making a joke there, but maybe not. He doesn't necessarily agree with the views of Heflin, but he does want to maintain the status quo of the white people being in power. He thinks the blacks are simple children who need managing and as long as the right white people are making the decisions, everyone will be fine. He defends Tom Robinson because he loves justice more than he fears being called a "n***er lover". But he probably has used that word himself.

I already knew about the story of how this prequel/sequel got published and it’s a darker, more interesting story than the execrable novel under discussion. People are probably just waiting for the right people to die, before making a movie about that. Family deceit, betrayal, gold digging, unethical publishers, willing to look the other way, it’s got everything from elder abuse, to racism; from moral philosophy, to the realities of modern America. That’s the story that NEEDS tellin’ y’all. Meanwhile, how many fans of Stephen King, I wonder, noted Robert Browning’s poem, Childe, “ROLAND,” To, “THE DARK TOWER,” Came? . . . Those novels are King’d best work, in my view. Despite the terrible movie that killed a potential franchise in the crib. Truly literate and wonderfully told, with characters that stay with you, for life. And the world building! The meta self referential art of drawing in all of his previous novels, into one universe, where we learn how everything from The Overlook Hotel, to Kugo and Carrie, got their dark powers. Yet it still manages to comment on the human condition, the banality of evil, and the hope to be found in friendships. If you haven’t read those novels, you’re missing out on real literature. Set aside your Jane Austin or your Joseph Conrad, and do yourself a favor. Now, THAT’S what I would like to hear this Thug’s analysis of!

Nathan Fernandes Don’t really See how that lesson can be applied to Luke Skywalker at all lol. We grew up with Luke’s perspective and saw how he developed into a hero “we” all idolized. He’s intended to, while not he perfect, be a paragon from the start. At least with Atticus, you can argue that most if not all of the book (if I recall correctly) was from Scout/Jean’s perspective which makes the two novel’s depiction of Atticus somewhat more consistent. You can’t argue the same for Luke Skywalker really. Nothing in either the original trilogy or the novelizations implies as such.

@evilcam
@evilcam 9 лет назад
I didn't even know Lee released another book. That in itself was news to me. Hearing that Atticus, the guy we all put on a pedestal fell from grace is messing with me. I understand then why the protagonist and then pretty much everyone who read it lost their shit as they read about the cataclysmic fall of their hero. However, Harper Lee seemed to understand and anticipate that, and used it to try to teach another, possibly equally important lesson. I think Sparky Sweets PhD hit the nail on the head with his spectacular summary and analysis. There was something else worth thinking about, and he elucidated it perfectly. This might be one of the best analysis segments Thug Notes has ever done. I think both Lee and Sweets brought up something that we all need to think about a bit more. I can't thank either enough for pretty much forcing it on us. Like most modernish people, when I encounter attitudes I think are detestable, like racism, I have a tendency to dismiss the person saying it, immediately. Awhile ago, while thinking about why I am justified being intolerant to intolerant people, I just could not help but notice my overwhelming hypocrisy. I may be better justified than a racist when I think they are terrible people, but the truth is, I am doing exactly the same thing they are doing. The kind of prejudice is different, but the process and end result is the same. At that time I started wondering if intolerance of intolerant people was just me falling into the same binary trap. I concluded it is. I don't yet know how to deal with it yet, and still have a lot of thinking to do o to try to figure out how to even think about it consistently, but I made a conscious decision to not simply condemn people for one obvious flaw. That is not to say I approve of racism, or any of the other attributes that I disagree with (because I don't, as I still find the act of racism deplorable) but I was being intensely hypocritical dismissing people for one specific characteristic I don't like. By reducing people to one attribute that I don't like, as Sweets pointed out, and even worse treating them badly for it, I am just as guilty of codifying and internally justifying a deplorable position and actions as they are. So, I think that in order to avoid that binary trap, and recognize that people are more complex than one attribute they possess, or their ethnicity, or skin color, or whatever shortcut towards a judgment we use, we should (or at least I should) avoid knee jerk reactions. So bringing it back to this book which I have not even read, I think Lee and Sweets are correct that even though Atticus is flawed, he is not merely just a racist asshole. He is a racist asshole, but he deserves more credit and consideration than merely that. Dismissing him solely because he is a racist asshole makes me just as prejudice as he is, and I don't want to be that. Thanks again for letting me know this book even existed, and for the spectacular summary and analysis. You brought up some deeper points that I don't think I would have even noticed had I read the book and not seen your analysis. Even though I try to consciously not think about people in a good or bad binary, I still have that tendency, and seeing Atticus fall from grace would have made me react exactly like everyone else reacted. Hopefully I would have come to my conclusion that complexity and general intolerance on my part was the wrong way to think about it, but you guys didn't fall into that trap at all. Wisecrack once again delivers, and in grand form.

evilcam Yeah, I got that... what bothered me more was how they practically waited for Harper Lee to get too old to have any say about the publication of the book she probably kinda hated. Also I miss Jem and Dill.
@ItsJustTooRed
@ItsJustTooRed 9 лет назад
evilcam Intolerance of intolerance is not the same as intolerance of different races/sexes/orientations. The latter is towards something one has no control over and cannot physcially change, whilst the other is towards a negative attitude that can be changed for a positive outcome. Saying they are just as bad as each other is like comparing a KKK rally ("down with blacks") to a pride rally ("down with homophobes" to an extent).
@evilcam
@evilcam 9 лет назад
ItsJustTooRed I recognize the distinction, which is why I said I think I am more justified being intolerant of intolerant people than they are of whatever group of people they dislike, but my problem is it is still me reverting to default reduction, when I think doing that is also wrong. I guess as a matter of consistency, we can justify it to ourselves by saying "they deserve our ire" or whatever, but it's still not thinking complexly about other people, and just deriding them based on that prejudice. So while not liking racists is not the same exact thing as the racists not liking other races, that the process and end result end up being the same in either direction, makes me uncomfortable. So, I think there is merit in at least thinking about how to avoid the same old binary judgment. As I said, I don't know how to do that yet, how to consolidate my repulsion at their behavior without me putting that repulsion on the person themselves, but I think I need to. I don't think "fixing" social problems like racism with more intolerance and more prejudice will work in the end. That is as far as I've come on the subject, but I like that someone else is thinking and talking about it, at least in popular culture. I am just too uncomfortable being an abject hypocrite when it comes to intolerance. I hope some day I will figure out how to do it with some real world efficacy...but until I do, this almost equally uncomfortable state of non-committal and weak judgments is all I have. If it's not for you, fine. I don't think my position is any more evolved or refined than anyone else's. I don't even think I am right...I just think the opposite is considerably more untenable. I just hope you recognize that intolerance is not a good default position, even if you feel it is justified. Even if it MIGHT be justified, it's still flawed, and will not really do much to convince prejudice people that it is wrong. Also, I think that the strawman "Saying they are just as bad as each other is like comparing a KKK rally ("down with blacks") to a pride rally ("down with homophobes" to an extent)" is way off base. I was not likening them to one another implying that they are equally offensive. I recognize that one group going out of their way to condemn people who are different than them with one reacting to the reverse is not symmetrical. I didn't use specifics in my OP, but I am not saying that people going to pride rallies are just as bad as the KKK. I am saying I at least (but I hope "we' in general) need to not fall into the binary trap of "them" being different thus worthy of our condemnation simply because of that difference. That itself is deeper than specific examples, and more at the theory of prejudice, rather than real world applications.

***** But that doesn't mean shit. Aside from the fact that humans are fallible and corruptible, take the Treaty of Westphalia, from which we get the idea of Westphalian Sovereignty. The idea of Westphalian Sovereignty says that each country has sovereignty over their own country and affairs and other countries can't say shit. That was agreed on by a consensus of people...so why was Nazi Germany "bad" for exterminating Jews in their own country? According to the consensus of humans other countries can't say shit about what happens in other's borders. My whole point is that the "grand consensus" or majority, only determine right and wrong because they have the majority. But that's a shit system because majorities can and do change. Nazi Germany had a majority in Germany, why were they "wrong"? They were acting within an idea agreed upon by a majority of Europeans, so why were they "wrong"? On a smaller scale, why are you "right" and others "wrong" and in need of change? That's my whole point..."right and wrong" are a perspective.

Atticus being a racist to me was a really good thing to have because it shows that people that you worship aren't always perfect and have their flaws. Not only that but Scout being so out of her element and upset as to how she sees her town is a feeling shared by the reader. +blitzwaffe No fears!! The Atticus in this "new" book and the original Atticus are two completely different people. This was just a rough draft of that first book. When Superman was first created, he was originally a bald supervillain with psychic powers- then they tweeked the idea. Same with Atticus. The ONLY reason this book is even on the shelves is because someone wanted to use Harper Lee's name for some $$$$$$$$$$$$

***** Well, I read the first three in quick succession back in the 90s and liked King's take on the post-apocalypse, and loved his tragic doomed hero figure lifted from Browning's poem. But then came the oughties and the protracted conclusion to the series, wildly varied in tone and theme. He brings in, takes out, or totally rewrites character and subplots all over the place. He makes himself a character at one point, FFS. The series becomes a parody of itself, culminating in the most horrendously conceived and written resolution I've ever read. (I'm not talking about the time loop thing, that actually made some sense. I'm talking about everything that preceded it.) King ruins his own series, as so many authors have done before him, by allowing the writing process to stretch over several decades. Since he's only human, his interests and moods and writing styles change over time, and he just can't keep it up. Working on the damn thing became a chore for him at one point, that's clear from the way the final few are written and the author has said as much in some of the postscripts. Overall, it's a damn tragedy what happened with DT as a whole. But that doesn't change the fact that the first two books are excellent, some of the best he's written IMHO. (At least before the stupid, stupid rewrite of Gunslinger that he did at one point to make it fit better with the books that came later.)

"Even if someone got a whack-ass worldview, you should still give them a chance." This is the key to tolerance. A lot of players are good on accident, and even having a good worldview doesn't make you a good person unless you live it. You can't be judging other people for what they believe, judge them for what they do. Atticus was a sane man who defended those who were in need, even if he felt they were inferior.

Racism is a inexcusable behavior. If you don't give other people a chance to prove themselves, why the hell do they deserve a chance? It's a good book on it's own, but as a sequel it doesn't make sense. Atticus was always a level headed and a man who believed in justice, no matter what. He taught his kids to not judge, which is literally what racism is. It's just a poor cash grab and it pisses on Lee's legacy.

Hell, even if he said it in front of a crowd of people while in the wrestling ring, it would still be stupid to punish him for saying the word. Why? Because it's a fucking word. Does it say something about his, or anyone's character that he used it? Yes. However, if people going to allow a single, solitary word to get them this assblasted, then maybe it's THEM who has the problem.

I think people who are racist, homophobic, (and all the other horrible phobias that aren't really phobias) aren't bad people. I think that they aren't exposed to the hurt that their causing through their hate. I think that if we can educate these people on these issues that we can change their point of view.
@homeiswonderland
@homeiswonderland 9 лет назад
Simplybriee I respectfully disagree. I think that a lot of segregation comes from the "victims" themselves. Ex. I have nothing against gay people, I'm happy they're allowed to get married now, but there is a divide that I wish wasn't created. I dislike when people scream they're sexual preferences from the rooftops. I know people like that, very preachy people, and it gives that entire group a bad name. I think these phobias come from bad experiences with particular people that SHOULD NOT represent the group as a whole.
@homeiswonderland
@homeiswonderland 9 лет назад
***** Fair enough. Sadly, it doesn't make it any less annoying... I know one person in which their life revolves around it though and it's really their only topic of interest. And I just don't think that's very healthy... straight or gay, your sexual preferences shouldn't be the pinnacle of our existence.
@laneyliberty
@laneyliberty 9 лет назад
The world sees people as Gay, or POC, or Trans, etc.. it doesn't see them as people. In reality being trans, gay or whatever colour skin you have is a small part of who you are. But the world does want to know what ideas you have for environmental change for example they label you as one thing. So people whose whole life revolves around them being gay, they're probably trying to change how gay people are seen, or trying to help gay youth etc.. because of how harshly the world treats these people. Fighting for the rights of something you believe whether it is gender, race, sexual orientation or even animals shouldn't be annoying it should be noble consider they lengths that people like that have to go through to have the same rights as people who are considered the norm. And considering if they were they white, straight or comfortable with the gender they were born in they wouldn't have to fight to feel normal. And even if you do find it annoying, They're not causing separation.Separation inflicted by the groups who are victimized is caused when the groups of people no longer feel *safe*. And that isn't them causing separation that is the abusers. I don't know if i addressed what you were talking about but this is just my opinon
@homeiswonderland
@homeiswonderland 9 лет назад
Simplybriee Well I don't like the way they're trying to make gay people seen. I want to see people who are gay as PEOPLE, people who love people who just happen to be their same gender. There's nothing wrong with that. What I don't want is gay people portrayed as people who never stop talking about their sexual preferences or, in the case of my acquaintance. makes that her excuse for everything. "You said you don't want me to go out partying Saturday night, mom?! It's because I'm gay, isn't it?!" That's just giving bad association to being gay. (That being said, if someone DOES have a serious problem with their family not accepting them, I think it's just best to get out of that house ASAP. Some people you just can't change. unfortunately).The people who I've heard have been harassed in my old high school weren't harassed because of their sexual orientation, but because it was all they ever cared about. Seriously, love each other, be happy together, be good people thus good role models, but don't flaunt it like it's your only defining characteristic.
@CitizenScribbler
@CitizenScribbler 9 лет назад
homeiswonderland Wait... they harassed gay kids at your high school; not because the kids were gay, but because being gay was "all they ever cared about"? And you're ok with this? Did they harass football players for whom football was "all they ever cared about'? Do you see how that sounds? It doesn't add up and it isn't right. And what is meant by "flaunt"? How do gay people flaunt their sexual preferences any more than straight people? And wouldn't you rather be aware that one of classmates is a lesbian BEFORE you ask her out on a date?

A very concise and well-analyzed book review, articulated with plenty of flair and entertaining value. :) That being said, I have to admit the analysis wasn't completely accurate - more like 95% accurate. How so? Atticus wasn't a true racist, nor did he hate on black people. He made a comparison along the lines of giving all black people (of that time), all the exact same rights and equality as the white folks, akin to giving an adolescent a gun, as most of them lacked a real education and a stable foundation, and would therefore do themselves and their own people a lot of harm. He used the example of how the NAACP would want to get any black man convicted of a crime, set free with no punishment, simply because he was black, and not based on whether he was guilty or not, and Atticus (an attorney) saw that as a corruption of the system (and corruption of power). Furthermore, Atticus pointed out the fact that he and Henry had to live in their community, and make a living there, and if he picked a fight with the whole town over every social injustice, that he would have been driven out of town, and would no longer be a part of the community he called home. Additionally, Atticus acknowledged the fact that how the white people treated the black people at that time was wrong, and that the black community deserved understanding and the sympathy of the white folks. He also admitted that he didn't believe in a lot of what was being said about the black folks, but instead chose to bite his tongue (in most instances), or at least try to be diplomatic about it, as not to ostracize himself from his own community... and that the necessary social "changes" could not happen overnight, but would have to happen over a long period of time, because of people's fears and beliefs. Now personally, I myself don't completely believe in all of what Atticus said in his defense, but I at least understand where he was coming from. So saying that Atticus was a full-on racist, isn't exactly accurate. If you wanted to be more accurate, the more correct terms to call Atticus would be words like: hypocrite, or coward, or sell-out, etc... Finally, when Uncle Jack called Jean-Louise a 'bigot'... he was not implying that she was a hater ... but rather that she was being narrow-minded and intolerant of other viewpoints, refusing to accept any viewpoint other then her own as having value or merit. NOTE: There is a lot of truth in what Uncle Jack said, in how we are all bigoted in certain ways, as we aren't trying to understand the other side, and we believe that we are in the "right", and all other views are wrong, and so when we seek out information, we only look for or pay attention to information that is in agreement with our own beliefs (what they now call "information bias). That bias or narrow-mindedness, is the true definition of being a bigot, and not necessarily that you are a racist or a sexist.

I grew up in West Virginia, and thanks to being born into the age of the internet, I was able to educate myself. I was (still am, but was sounds more dramatic) a far left liberal atheistic homosexual surrounded by southern West Virginian culture of homophobia, sexism, a light smattering of racism, and soldier diefication. I often get shit for my views and my sexuality, however, as this book itself says, that is not a one-way ticket to being a monster. My family may have very regressionist beliefs, but I have seen myself how great they can be in times of struggle. Where we live there's a flood every few years, and recently one of those floods hit *hard*. My family, somewhat racist, homophobic, left-hating, Obama-death-wanting crazy-asses went out and bought a shitton of water and forded the high waters, risking their vehicles and worst case their lives, just to deliver water to those who couldn't get out of their houses. People should be judged on their entirety, not based on the worst parts. Hatred has more impact than a positive view, but every person has pros and cons to their being. That's just reality.

Just because it was written with thematic relevance does not, in fact, mean it wasn't "for shits and giggles." Every writer on the planet has written something for the sheer hell of it, often without the intent of ever showing the piece to the public. I think that was probably the case with Watchman, and I understand why. It isn't a bad book in and of itself, but as many have said in their own terms, it lessens the value and integrity of Mockingbird by refuting what many people viewed as its basic premise.

Like yeah, they need to be stopped, made to pay, and definitely shouldn't be looked up to, but you can't give the same punishment to both evils, can you? Because even then, you'd need to know what IS okay to do, and where the line is. And in such a case, wouldn't that be like saying "Pour me some sand, but stop before it becomes a heap"?

My 14 year old said that maybe the Atticus in Go Set a Watchman is just representative of our realization when we grow up that our parents aren't perfect. In childhood, we tend to idealize our parents, but when we grow up, we see things that might be hard to see - that they are flawed human beings. So that's why the Atticus in TKAM was such a hero - because he was being viewed through the eyes of Scout, a child. She turned us all into children. And now, with Go Set a Watchman, she's made us grow up, whether we like it or not.

I personally believe that racists or homophobes, generally bigots, deserve at least one chance at redemption. At least one chance to change their mind. If they can't do that, then they aren't worth the time. If they aren't able to change their minds, then they are lost.

The funny thing is, whenever I read To Kill A Mockingbird, I never saw Atticus as a fighter for racial equality. I saw a man who valued justice and the law. That's why he fought so passionately. But that was how I read it. Can we support Atticus? Of course we can. His vague, two-dimensional racism in Go Set a Watchman does not invalidate any of the good he's done or the wisdom he's spoken. If we were to throw out a character simply because they're flawed then we wouldn't listen to a single damn thing anybody from a book has ever said.

Omg I wish this was April fools day. I mean I am so disappointed in atticus!!! I thought he was a good guy!!! I actually looked up to him!!! Seems like the moral of the story is do not trust anybody!!!

How'd you reach that conclusion? I think the moral here is that even if people have messed up world views, that doesn't automatically make them monsters, and if you hate them as a person for their beliefs, you'll be just as bigoted as they are. After all, hate the sin, love the sinner.

Jack Ronesto You are not a bigot for hating a bigot. A persons beliefs makes up who that person is you can separate a person from there beliefs even if beliefs can change.

I think it would have been better if Atticus had a different flaw, like him being against women's rights or something. Having him pull a complete 180 on his views on race doesn't make any sense.

Logan Benton you know, I saw a bit of that in “to kill a mockingbird”. When he thought about women serving in the jury he said they’d never have anything tried because the women would be constantly interrupting.

I think we can learn a lot from the fact that "Go Set a Watchman" came before "To Kill a Mockingbird", and it's also why Atticus is still awesome regardless if he's a racist. Just as Lee Harper had to change the story of "Go Set a Watchman" and turn it into "To Kill a Mockingbird", which essentially was Atticus going from racist opinions to, well, not racist opinions, so too can people change their opinions and worldviews. Unfortunately, instead of engaging someone with an opposing viewpoint in a civil discourse, people, like Jean, are quick to completely throw someone under the bus and go so far as to hate them when they discover they aren't that perfect, god-like individual they thought they were. So why does this make the racist version of Atticus awesome? That's because, without him (and, by extension, Uncle Finch), the lessons of "Go Set a Watchman" don't have the same impact. The truth is both stories offer great insight on Segregation and the attitudes of the time. Lastly, to everyone whining about how Atticus is ruined, you're all forgetting that "Go Set a Watchman" is what "To Kill a Mockingbird" WOULD HAVE BEEN. Your beloved Atticus is still the anti-racism superhero he was when you first read about him in school.
