Ingredients:
White Peas / Chanas / Vatana - 1 cup / 250 gms
Freshly Grated Coconut - 1 cup
Tamarind Ball - size of a small Lime
Onions - 2 medium size / 150 gms ( sliced )
Curry leaves / Karee Pataa - 12
Green Chillies - 2
Ginger - ¼ inch piece
Garlic - 6 cloves
Coriander / Cilantro leaves for garnishing ( finely cut )
Turmeric / Haldi powder - 3/4 tsp
Fennel seeds / Badishep - ¼ tsp
Cumin / Jeera seeds - ½ tsp
Coriander seeds - 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds - ¼ tsp
Button Red Chillies ( mild spicy ) - 3 to 4
Cinnamon - ½ inch piece
Black Peppercorns - 4
Cloves - 4
Green Cardamom - 1
Nutmeg - 1/8 piece
Star Anise - 2 petals
Mace - little
Bay Leaf - 1
Sugar - ½ tsp
Salt - 2 tsp
Cooking Oil / Coconut Oil - 2 tbsp + 2 tsp
Water - 7 ½ cups / 1 litre 875 ml

Yes, we had a great Sunday dinner, thanks to your dish. The last coconut was spoilt so used dried coconut, ran out of ginger, so used powder. Didn't have fennel seeds, but it was great. Thanks a lot. ps. Had my molars extracted 3 days ago, but I gorged on this, worth the aching gums!!!!

Name some shops in Goa as to where l will get button chillies. When l go to Goa, l will buy some. Thx. ..Mapuca or Margao ? .

Amelia, you will get it in both markets, Margao & Mapusa. Just check with anyone in the market and they will guide you. Button chillies are locally grown chillies used mostly by Hindu Goans in their recipes. They prefer these compared to Kashmiri chillies as they are more spicy and don't give a red color to the dish 🙂

Sudhir, Thank you so much. We have given the ingredients used in Goa to make authentic Channa Ros. But you can modify it to add tomatoes instead of Tamarind & you can also skip the sugar if you want, No problem at all. 🙂

Yes, the tamarind was ground along with the other ingredients. It was put in the mixer just before the turmeric & water.

Windsor, we have used white peas (vatana)🙂.... The name of this dish is deceptive because it is called Chonyacho Ros 😄

Khairoon, you need to add the tamarind while grinding the masala. Check Step 5 carefully towards the end just before adding the Turmeric.

Einstein, if you watch the video you will notice that we have used white peas / vatana but this dish is called Chonyacho Ros in Goa. But it's not made with Chana😄 Do check out our Vegetarian playlist on the channel

Actually i am a goan from tivim cansa.( Mapusa) But i come to goa just once yr for just few hrs. That also on a Sunday. Hence all shops closed

We are aware that these are not channa, and it's mentioned that these are vatana or white peas. But this dish is called Chonyacho Ros in Goa. 🙂

Rema, this dish is made with Vatana (white peas) but this dish is called Chonyacho Ros in Goa 🙂

Thise is not chanas.,known as सफेद vatana. Vatana ros.

Bharti, please watch the video. It is mentioned that this is white Vatana, but in Goa this dish is call Chonyacho Ros & not Vatana Ros
