'The Venue' - Iconic Melb rock gig in the late 70's early 80's. Formerly known as 'Earls Court' situated next door to the St Moritz ice rink in St Kilda - both sadly gone to make way for condo land. We saw John Mayall, The Angels, Hunters and Collectors and Goanna regularly to name but a few. Our good mate Bob Coy painted the rock icon murals on the surrounding walls and it was a magic time for all of us who were there.
this is a home vid of a bit of one of those nights more to come when i find it.
CREDIT CORRECTION - I am reliably informed that BILL DART was the FOH engineer for these Venue gigs, not Tony Beutel. my apologies to Bill. (it was a long time ago).

This video was actually recorded on the night of Saturday Nov. 11,1982, not the 12th(Sunday). Set up began at 6:30 am for the shooting of the Solid Rock clip under the direction of Trevor Lucas (Fairport Convention) who produced Spirit of Place album. I did FOH sound for this gig ,Tony Buettel wasn't there, he engineered the album, but didn't do live sound. This is my mix. I have the original desk tapes to prove it, Rob.

hi Bill, sorry about the mix up re FOH, unfortunately its too hard for me to redo this clip with correct credits at the mo. Please accept my apology. all I can do is correct it in the notes, which I will do. this gig with children is not the 'Solid Rock' filming gig, its a different night. Note there is no Uluru backdrop and the lighting is completely different. I have the whole of the other gig on vid. Also Russell Smith and Davo were not present on the film clip night. hence the reason Warrick is filmed playing Davo's solo. Cheers Rob

Thanks for the acknowledgement, I understand how complex it would be to redo it. I new it was my mix because I always used chorus/reverb & delay (RE555) on vocals and guitars. I also synced up my tape copy with your video and confirmed they were one and the same. The gig started on Saturday night (11th) but finished well and truly into the 12th. Cheers, keep up the good work.

I found the "Spirit of Place" LP in a used record store in Dublin, Ireland back in the early 80s... thought it was one of the best damn things I had ever heard! I still dust it off and play it from time to time. Thanks for posting this video!

Used to follow Goanna everywhere around Vic. LOVED THEM!!! Thanks, Rob, SO much for putting these live videos on youtube. And The Venue. What can i say but it was one of THE best places to see a live band.

This video is f***ing amazing. I've only known Goanna from the obvious radio hit before this, they were obviously a great band with a great songwriter in Shane Howard. Thanks for posting this!

@@tonychristensen6714 you might need to have a discussion with Shane about the meaning of his song Solid Rock and how captain cook lied to the British government when he said there was no-one here in Australia when he supposedly 'discovered it'. Hence the term 'terra nullius' and they went on to colonise this land and deliberately try to wipe out the original inhabitants. The 'Children Of The Southern Land ' to quote the above song "They take your land and they take your soul and leave you in despair!" - because of Captain Cook claiming this land for England - no treaty still, and incredible struggle for a long long time to get a foothold for landrights. meanwhile the powers that be desecrate sacred sites, dig them up, blow theme up and pay lip service to the traditional custodians.
