In this episode, I introduce and unravel the amazing life of His Highness Sultan Mahomed Shah: Aga Khan III. We will delve into his passions and learn about the many hats he wore in his quest to re-energized the Nizari movement and also the pivotal role he played in the complex politics of the Indian subcontinent in the first half of the 20th Century.
I also clarify some of the queries viewers have had about my leaving the Agakhani System.

I am completely blown away from all this information you are providing. Every episode I’m nodding in agreement. I have always had questions but they were never answered because “good Ismailis” do not ask such questions. I remember asking my mom why did Aga Khan get divorced because uhm...its a valid question to ask. The response or lack of response should have said it all. That was the last time I asked a question. However, I hate to admit but I did continue to follow in blind faith because I was doing it for my mom. She passed in 2010 and I felt the need to continue because I didn’t want her souls to be “mad”. (I know, it doesn’t sound realistic, but mom me at everything to me). Until 2 years ago when my son was born. He’s half Bengali (that’s my nationality) and half Belizean (my husband). When I saw how we were treated (here in California) when I tried to have my son become Ismaili...That was the last straw! It was no longer about me and my questions or making my mom’s souls at peace; it was how the whole institution operates and how EXTREMELY racist and judgmental it is. Thank you for doing this! Thank you for sharing because many of us are feeling a certain way as well!

Then after remembering her he sends his trusted Half Apeman god to rescue her. He of course consoles her on the way whenever they passed by remote ,isolated and romantic waterfalls before returning her to RAMA her first LOVE. My comments may be long, but worth the time of readers who also appreciate pondering at both sides of a coin, metaphorically speaking. Salim Lalani's presentations appear to be respectful to the subject matter. And they likely appear to have good intentions behind them. However, his efforts involving his personal subjective interpretations on Aga Khan, have to be interpreted with both an open mind, and also as an act of his personal sincerity to others; if it has to have any educational and positive benefits. As a practicing Shia Ismaili Muslim myself, who is also a murid of the Murshid of the Ismaili Muslims tariqa; it is understandable that some of the Ismaili Muslims practises "may appear" to be misunderstood at the surface. However, the essence of these practices are very much consistent with the spirit of Islamic concept of Tawhid that blends in "seamlessly with the esoteric practices" of the pluralistic and mosaic of traditions without diluting the essence of Tawhid itself. Many of these traditions have found home with the Shia Ismaili Muslims. Also, some of these traditions on their own accord and free will, have historically chosen to show their affection with either material gifts, monetary gifts or affective poetries to the Ismaili Imam of time. This mosaic of pluralistic cultures historically, have integrated without any compulsion or force of any kind, into the Shia Ismaili Muslim tariqa upon their acceptance of the Ismaili Imam of time. Examples of traditions that make up the mosaic are: 1) The practice of Murshid-Murid relationship, compliments of Sufism tradition. 2) The Central Asian practices, compliments of Nasir Khusrav tradition. 3) The practices of Satpanthi Khojas, compliments of Satpanth tradition from the Indian sub-continent. 4) The practices of Arab Muslims, compliments of Middle Eastern traditions. 5) Etc. Without any doubt, the Shia Ismaili Muslims Constitution is the guiding document on the core doctrine of Shia Ismaili Muslims. The said constitution is approved by the Shia Ismaili Muslim's Imam of the time, and clearly articulates the following as a minimum: 1) The Ismaili Muslims core doctrine of the Tawhid, which is the belief in one God none other then Allah. 2) The historical and traditional references to the beginning of Imamat institution. 3) The role and the authority of the Imamat evolving not only as the Imam of time, but also implied as the Murshid of his murids. 4) No formal requirement whatsoever, of the need of material or monetary contributions, by Ismaili Muslims to their Imam. 5) Many other relevant facts. It is therefore imperative, that the Shia Ismaili Muslims doctrine and their faith practices should be understood from the focal point of the Shia Ismaili Muslim's constitution. And it should be read in the full context basis and not on cherry picked basis. Otherwise, it has a serious potential to be misunderstood and misconstrued. As a benefit to all the interested readers, a very important message: If any member of the Ismaili tariqa, the tariqa's secondary leadership or any other person who intentionally interprets the Ismaili Muslims faith and it's core beliefs other then as articulated in the guiding document of the Shia Ismaili Muslim's constitution; such a member, the secondary leadership or the person is not only misrepresenting the facts as intended; but is also doing a great dis-service to the Ismaili faith in general and the Shia Ismaili Muslim's Imam in particular. The later also being referred to as the current Aga Khan.

You know when prophet Ibrahim AS brought Islam to Arabia, the people followed his teachings for years and several generations. Then, the people started dividing and fighting amongs themselves and their interactions with distant polytheistic people. This lead to the dilution and weakening of their faith. And finally, within a few centuries they became polytheists. The same happened to Bannu Israel, division and dilution untill the Romans marched into Jerusalem. If you profess Islam, then you must only follow the Quran and the Sunnah. Not add ons from unknown, unauthoritive historical characters.

aslkm hearing about the hh will it be wise to have a doubt on the role of shia ismaili leader in partition of india, he was rejected by muslims and had to resign from the post of president of muslim league, on the other hand m a jinnah was also a khoja, was partition was a conspiracy of anti muslim world, maulana azad and company who were sunni muslim says partition was a blunder, the reason-- a block of educated muslims speaking almost same language having good islamic values and practices, and an immense amount of modern day talent will be splitted into two later three, as calculated and designed at the time of partition, this point dr israr was asked in a very safe and cautious way and he hinted the point in equally cautious way, as he knew that replying this question was like playing with a huge ball of fire and his own fellow nationals might go against him because since partition an overdose of partition horror and threat from india is fed resulting in high patriotism in a common man. this is a point to ponder for an intellectual. and mr salim u have done an extensive work against ismailism, and fingures point on your intentions as you denounce the ismailism and did not get firm on islam, or u going towards atheism. or go back to ismailism if offered an handsome amount Akbar khoja bhai in his video along with you said that you have reverted to islam, what is the truth please reveal

Hi Salim. I am sequentially watching your videos and have learned a lot. You seem to have done your homework. At this point, I am seriously doubting the direct lineage to Prophet Mohammed claim made by the Aga Khan. I also see how there is a systemic attempt (via Ginans for example) to equate the Imam to Allah himself and I can never accept this. When I heard your reason for leaving, I was a little surprised that you chose that point to leave. I mean you had been chosen to be Mukhi of the most important, secretive Fidai Majilis. You paid to be in that Majilis. Prior to that you had so many rituals that you participated in and so much money that you forked over and you went along with all of this for 55 years. But you made the decision to leave on such a minute detail of admitting deceased people to the Fidai Majilis, which is surprising to me. To me it just seems that Ismailis make the personal choice to admit their deceased relatives because they feel that the deceased souls will be blessed. Why should they not be able to make this choice for their deceased loved ones. Do you think this is just a way to milk the members of Fidai to get extra money for the Aga Khan? How much does admission to Fidai cost? To me it seems that you felt disrespected by the lack of a proper response to your inquiry and left because you were offended. I don't think you left because you did not like the idea of admitting dead individuals to the Majilis and found that irrational because, if this were the case, there were hundreds of prior reasons to leave before you made it to the prestigious position of FIdai Mukhi as there are several similar irrational things that you could have questioned in your prior 55 years. Anyway, these are just my thoughts on the matter. Please don't take any offence. I think you are doing a great job and are showing bravery. Renouncing the Ismail community must be very hard. The community is very close knit and there are many, many positives to being in this community as I have stated in my prior comment in your Episode 1 Introduction video. For me, so far, I am willing to accept the negative sides of the Ismaili faith and work towards improving them so that I can participate in the overwhelming positive aspects of this faith which does place great emphasis on spirituality, volunteerism, living in peace with the communities you are in, etc. All faiths have positives and negatives and there are plenty of reasons to leave any faith but the need for community and spirituality keep people in the faith. Anyway, I hope you continue to revealing the answers to tough questions that most Ismailis are indeed discouraged from asking, especially in regards to the financial side. To me, you are just pointing out the negative aspects of this faith which is present in any faith. A lot of these negatives you are pointing out, many Ismailis have already figured out even though they are discouraged from asking questions. There are far, far more positives in the Ismaili faith that keep people believing and dedicating their life to this pretty amazing community.
@salimlalani
@salimlalani 3 года назад
Dear Naz Thanks for your comments Fidai incidence was just a realization that the system is about revenue collection. This blow was so big it broke my belief system. In Australia I remember paying $600 to join Fidai I agree there are many positives of belonging to the system. But show me one positive of having Agakhan as the leader. This is a challenge, not only to you but the whole system. Show me one positive. Once we deal with the positives of Agakhan, we will then count the negatives. You say you will work towards improving the negatives. You should know by now, as an Agakahni you are not allowed to speak leave alone fixing something. I support your freedom to speak out and I am against any form of censorship or legal bullying from the Ismaili leadership. In terms of leaving because of Fidai incident, it still doesn't make sense to me. There must be something more to it. I mean $600 lifetime membership is nothing and only a minute portion of the collection must be from dead people joining the Fidai Majilis that it wouldn't have any impact on revenues. The real revenue is of course from Dasond, nandi, dua karavi, Mehmani, etc, etc, etc and you and your family happily paid into this over the 55 years you were there. Why would just a minor revenue collection opportunity be such an eye opener when there were such major revenue collections that were taking place without any account for where the money went? Anyway, whatever the reason may be, it is your personal choice and I am willing to drop this part of the argument entirely. Personally, my faith in the system was shaken when my children were born and I had to pay significant money for membership in various Majilis for them including a whopping $700 USD per child for Life Majilis. I mean, if I'm dedicating my child's life to the Imam shouldn't I be the one getting paid for such a tremendous sacrifice. (I would like to note that Majilis membership is not mandatory, but there is tremendous social pressure to join certain Majilis). Similarly, in the case of Fidai (which is highly regarded), you are becoming a soilder for the Imam and ready to sacrifice your life for Him. Why should you have to pay someone to do this? Isn't your readiness to sacrifice your life enough? Anyway most of the Majilis shenanigans are just symbolic so, even though my faith is shaken, I don't want to quit an amazing community with an amazing leader because of it. In terms of one positive of the Aga Khan, I am confused by this. Are you implying that there is nothing positive about Him? This is not true of any person let alone a great leader like the Aga Khan. You seem to agree with me that being part of a close knit community that emphasizes spirituality and volunteerism is a good thing. A community such as this benefits from a great leader and there is no leader in my eyes that is better for the Ismaili community than the current Aga Khan. You seem to be implying that the community is good but the leadership is bad. However, without Aga Khan's leadership the whole Ismaili community would fall apart. He is like the glue that holds everything together and motivates Ismaili's around the world to help each other and create Early Childhood Education, Golden Club for seniors, family picnics and get togethers as well as to support major humanitarian institutions like the Aga Khan Development network. Of course, there are negatives to the Aga Khan and the leadership and your videos are definitely opening many eyes, but the positives far outweigh the negatives. To imply that there is nothing positive about the Aga Khan is a very flawed argument. I'm sure you yourself have probably seen the positives in your 55 years as an Ismaili. Otherwise you and many others would have left a long time ago. A community without strong leadership cannot hold people together for so many generations and encourage the type of volunteerism that is in the Ismaili community. I do agree with you that there is little I can do to improve the negatives as I am discouraged from speaking out. Your videos and the reactions to your video will do more that I could ever do because I just don't want to stir the pot. The idea being disrespected or ostracized by the community for opening talking about your faith and revealing its secrets or worse the idea of being excommunicated are indeed scary. Imagine family members that have known you your whole life and have so many memories with you no longer wanting to have anything to do with you. Dying alone is a scary thought also. I don't think excommunication is worse than death but it is pretty scary. Anyway, I will stop there. Thank you for videos and the humility you have shown and for being open and responsive to the comments. You are indeed doing something brave here.

@@salimlalani Sorry about my long comments. As you may have picked up, I am having somewhat of an identity crisis myself and am questioning my faith in ways I never have before. So far, I am still continuing my faith in the system. In terms of the positive qualities of Aga Khan, I still consider him a good leader. I don't see him as supernatural, but do regard him the same as our spiritual leader Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) who has a more direct channel to the messages of Allah Himself. It concerns me that you don't feel that the Aga Khan has no positive qualities and is purely a fraudulent leader (the ultimate scam artist perhaps). His guidance to the Ismaili community encourages people to follow a humble, dignified life and help others. It motivates Ismailis to create support systems for spiritual well being, birth, death, education, family, etc. I disagree that the community can exist without his leadership. Honestly, I feel your saying the Aga Khan has no positive qualities is an extreme stance and makes me feel that there was a falling apart and hard feelings that occurred when you renounced the faith. It was not a simple realization that the system is fraudulent as this realization should have come much sooner prior to being appointed Fidai Mukhi. In my opinion, there is definitely an element of sour grapes here and you have now made it your mission to expose the system. In terms of Dasond, my understanding is that Dasond is an unconditional gift to the Imam of the time. Similar to any other unconditional monetary gift to anyone, there is no questioning how the money is used and it is up to the Imam how to spend this. The Ismaili faith has kept a tradition of living Imam since the time of Prophet Mohammed. As such, it would be incumbent on the Murids to keep their living spiritual guide happy and well. I would say that those who disagree with giving Dasond because they feel like they are being scammed, to stop giving and just be part of the spiritual and community aspects. Similarly, don't join any Majilis unless you voluntarily want to take your Ismaili faith one step further and want to immerse yourself in the additional spirituality, tradition, and symbolism that the Majilises offer. In fact, make all contributions to other areas such as Dua Karavi, sukrit, awal sufra, nandi nominal and/or voluntary. If the system is purely held together by tithes and not by strong leadership, spirituality and community bonds then the major financial hit from lack of Dasond and Majilis membership will break the current system. Perhaps the whole religion will fall apart or maybe things will revert back to a less lavish form of Immamat.

If one knows from all the overwhelming evidence and after having applied some very basic common sense to the very crux of the matter being that of the authenticity of the imam in question, why would one then choose to continue on with this system? What is there left to have faith in? A fraud? One can build a community without a fraud at its head.

In Islam, marriage with first cousins is not prohibited. What is prohibited, is marriage with direct blood relatives (sister, mother, aunt) is not allowed. Also, Mutah is not a pre-Islamic tradition. Islam instituted it and it was performed by people in the times of the prophet (saww) and by some after him as well. Don't talk about that which you don't know.

I feel sorry for Ismailis sometimes because some of them believe very strongly in the righteousness and purity of the Aga Khan. But try to look at it from the perspective of someone who has managed to step outside of that box. If you manage to do that, you will see that the social dynamic within the Ismaili community is abusive and exists to serve its hierarchy. The voice of the little guy gets suppressed, and that’s why it’s admirable for people like Salim to speak out.

The video's descriptions of the notion of dasond are wholly inaccurate and patently false. Since the time of the Holy Prophet (SAS), Muslims have expressed generosity through offerings of material resources. These are not mandatory or obligatory, they are entirely voluntary. Ismailism is not unique in this way as many religions have similar mechanisms, ie biblical mandates - do review Hebrews 7:1-10 and the Old Testament and revise your stance. This narrative is dangerous.

Mr Lalani God bless you It is my personal theory that creation of Pakistan is also depends on a secret agenda. 1. Highness was the ears and eyes of British Govt without any doubt but he became the President of All India Muslim league means spokesman of Muslims of subcontinent. 2.Mr Jinnah was also a Ismaili person. 3. Mr Jinnah converted himself as Athna Ashri Shia in front of Bombay High court. 4. No body knows what was the main reason for this conversion of faith. 5. According to me the Shia and Sunni muslims were living brotherly and friendly in India with peace. 6. Ismaili were not acceptable to Shia and Sunni as both sects consider them Mushrik or Kafir. So Ismaili leader was not acceptable for a new Islamic country having Muslim majority. 7. As Imam is the final and supreme authority so his follower has to obey him without any question. So Mr Jinnah declared himself as Athna Ashri Shia according to the direction of his Imam. 8. Remember Mr Jinnah was least bothered upon the division of Punjab and Bengal and Gurdaspur. 9. His and His highness target was Sindh. 10. The network and development in Sindh and purchasing the huge property and land has some hidden significance. 11. As Ismaili network is Batni or Hidden network and they act with patience. They are waiting for a proper time to establish Fatmi Khilafat again in Independent Sindh. 12. There are some clues that the separatist elements of Sindh are funded by local Mukhies. 13. By establishing Fatmi Khilafat in Sindh it will be counter part of the Usmani Khilafat in Turkey. 14. As Turkey is moving towards Khilafat again so in the Presence of Fatmi Khalifa in Sindh the Usmani Khilafat will be not so effective because Fatmi Khilafat will be fully backed by West. 15. Same as Ahmadi or Qadiani are protected by West. Kindly also look into this subject when ever you have time Thanks

Inshalla Allah will guide you to the right path. This is the central teaching of the quran, that Allah sends messengers to the people and handful of them follow the prophet and the majority rejects it. Those that follow then start deviating from the original message after the death of the messenger. That is why the Quran has been protected by Allah against corruption. Follow the Quran and the sunnah and inshallah you will not be led astray.

I have no problem believing that some people with a very dark background or history can do some really good things in this world. While we should appreciate the good they do, we should not be afraid to expose their wrongs or the wrongs of their ancestors. In the end, what we expect them to say is, "yes, what my ancestors did was wrong, but here I am to set the record straight and to make amends on their behalf because I continue to benefit for what they did." The Aga Khan can at least say that he is not "mazhar" of God and that he and his ancestors were human beings, and we all make mistakes.
