Can someone explain the meaning of this song? Just seems conflicting with Ryan's stated beliefs and I feel like I'm misinterpreting the message.

I think Kirby explained it somewhere. Instead of some leaders in the church preaching on the love of Christ, they use the fear of hell to scare people. In a nutshell they're turning the God of love and mercy into something that he's not aka God of Fire.
