The development team originally considered Egyptian mythology but because that era emphasized civilization, it would draw away from central theme of a "stranger in a strange place" -- Cory Barlog wanted focus on Kratos and his son exploring a barren and isolated land.
The entire game is presented as one single, uninterrupted shot. There are no load screens, cinematic cutscenes, or fades to black. The concept was inspired by a sequence in John Woo's 1992 film, HARD BOILED.
For the first time in the series, Kratos will not be voiced by TC Carson. He'll be voiced by Christopher Judge, best known for his role as Teal'c in Stargate SG-1. Sunny Suljic, who plays Atreus, was given significant input on casting his in-game father and because of their great chemistry, Judge was chosen for the role of Kratos.
Kratos' main offensive weapon will be a two-handed war axe called Leviathan. The Leviathan is a sea monster mentioned in the Hebrew Bible and it is speculated that the development team named the axe Leviathan as a reference to the intended ending for God of War 3, where the flooding and death of the Greek Gods lead to the creation of monotheism.
Kratos' son Atreus was nearly cut from the game to due difficulties in creating an AI companion. Instead, the developers looked to Naughty Dog for help, who had scrapped and rebuilt Ellie's AI in six months time. The collaboration didn't stop there -- the team also worked with Horizon Zero Dawn developer Guerilla Games.
