"I know". That... that right there is an amazing piece of acting. His voice breaking. The long pause, waiting for a response. That is why I love gaming. You can actually feel the emotion and the thoughts going through Kratos head while that is happening. That "I know", said as someone that remembered everything he did. All his mistakes... al the death and suffering caused by those damned blades. Knowing the fact that the only way he can fix this is going back to the darkness... never being able to flee from it.

It is truly admirable how deeply emotionally he delved into this performance. You listen to his voice and then his Kratos voice, and you see how much he has to put on to get there, but then he goes the extra mile, he lets real emotions come through, the full spectrum of sadness, guilt, vulnerability, rage, desperation. It is remarkable what he does with it. He sells the impossible, the toughest, angriest, most badass video game action hero of all time, just frozen and shaking with shame over everything that brought him to this point, everything that made Kratos before, he hates himself for it, he is so ashamed that the thing that terrifies him more than anything in the world, more than any Titan or Dragon or God... Is that his tiny, scrawny, innocent little son will be ashamed of him too. I think perhaps that is what Chris finds so emotional about this, is how he relates to Kratos as a father, this idea, this fear that you aren't who your child thinks you are, that perhaps you're not good enough for them and don't deserve the reverence they have for you that no feeling in the world can compare to, and worse yet the fear that they may never look at you that way again if they got to know you better. Another scene like that is him telling Atreus he's a god, and after just a few seconds of silence, Kratos desperately looks back, asking for some sort of reaction from him because he can't bear the anticipation, only to be relieved when Atreus takes the news seemingly well. Cory absolutely made the right call in choosing to tell this story, and they got the perfect man for the lead part.

I'm not surprised at all this made him cry. "You will always be a monster." "I know. But I am your monster no more." It is such a deep, powerful, emotional, moving moment. The weight of it, the weight that in some way we all feel, we're all monsters in our own way, some more than others. Knowing that no matter what you do, you will always be a monster, you cannot escape it, it will always be a part of you. But in the second game he reconciles this. He knows he is a monster, Heimdall was right, with his final word, "Monster...". He's horrified at what he did but he still did it, no matter what he does, that monster will always live inside of him. But when he talks to Thor, and Thor is experiencing the same pain and shame and regret that he did in that moment with Athena, KNOWING he's a monster, KNOWING he's done so many evil unredeemable things, and in that moment he becomes who he needed when Athena said that to you. "Don't you know...WHAT I'VE DONE?!" "YES! But what will you do now?" That's what HE needed to hear in that moment, that he will always be a monster, that he can't change the past, but he CAN be better moving forward. He can be a monster, but he doesn't have to be evil. And that's the key. Living with the pain, with the regret, and pushing forward through it and trying every day to keep it under control and to be a better person. Yeah, that would make me cry too.

Damn I know it’s his business but now I wanna know so badly what he was thinking and feeling. I’m sure every parent has the same feeling of wishing they could have been a better father or mother but for Christopher to be so emotional is so moving and touching

I have a feeling they used a more subtle take for the final product, because it would not really be in Kratos’s character to show his bare emotions in presence of Athena. Or anyone, really. In the final take, you still see all of Christopher Judge’s emotion in Kratos’s eyes.
@robinanwaldt
@robinanwaldt 4 года назад
DraKaleel 18 I never said it was about revenge. But Athena’s presence is a major factor here. Also Kratos was never a person displaying his emotions this heavily.

Well it’s not voice acting. It’s acting. Just digitally. His body movement and facial features are tracked. It’s harder than regular acting id say.

I keep coming back to this clip. So many years later I still think about it. How it affects me and the times I feel I need to hear him say the words “I Know” really affects me emotionally. Being a fan of God Of War, seeing that tear drop just everything about it. Makes me sad, hurt, angry and regret for the shit mistakes ive done in the past.

According to Cory (the game director) he had Chris do this scene 2-3 times and he didn’t realize the impact of wat he was doing until Chris approached him and asked for a quick break, to which Cory apologized and let him. Of course the crying in this take didn’t fit so he did the lines again afterward so that kratos’ emotion is more subtle but still heartbreaking. Chris said himself that one of the hardest things for him was to be a blank slate.

It's the emotion in front of, and behind the camera that won this game all the awards. As it damn well should have. This is why it won over RD2.
@jakeola10

RDR2 also had that level of emotion in it. You should see some of the interviews from the actors who played Arthur and Dutch. They’re both phenomenal games that both equally deserved GOTY IMO. 2018 was such a great year for gaming.
