Judging by all the cut content, I'm pretty certain the dlc is going to have us time travel before the shattering and meet the gods we missed in our journey.
Not only does this dialogue seems to be taking place outside the lands between but also in the past before the shattering. Which could mean that there was at some point maybe a past sequence before you arrive at the chapel.
I don't see why it would be before the shattering. The tarnished only get grace after it and there is no way the fingers would guide you before the situation was dire.
@@Romapolitan That's incorrect, Godfrey's people became tarnished only after queen Marika had no more use for them but they were most definitely blessed by grace in their wars.
This perfectly meshes with a theory of mine that when Marika Exiled Godfrey and the Tarnished, she kinda locked them away in time like Placidussax is. And that explains our ability to constantly come back over and over. Its not revival. Its a time loop.
The most interesting thing I take from this is "Be ready once it is shattered." We know that Marika told Godfrey and his followers that Grace would call to them again through Melina's dialogue, but this implies that Godfrey knew for certain exactly what would happen. Marika really did plan everything.
What's weird and isn't at all in line with current game is that he is telling you to seize the elden ring and become elden lord, which he is obviously not keen on right now.
@@gaelyr8322 I think Godfrey was supposed to be our mentor of some sorts to guide us to Elden ring as Hoarah Loux. But then devs thought, wait he must be one of the bosses and placed him in the end of the game without any explanation.
@@gaelyr8322 Maybe Godfrey just wanted Snu Snu with his old wife (it's been a long time). And leave the complicated stuff for another guy. If only the Great Will hadn't imprisoned Marika, everything would have gone according to Godfrey's plan.
Actually this adds an extra layer of intrigue to the player character. Since it occurs pre shatter and the way Godfrey talks to us it implies that we are part of the original tarnished to leave the lands between. Moreover it implies we fought alongside Godfrey for a time making the fight with him more dramatic. It kinda implies that there was originally going to be more stuff involving us and Godfrey being linked to make his fight more dramatic.
This is how you make set character that is also blank slate. State some facts to narrow it a bit i.e. "one of first Tarnished, present during Long March" while leave rest for player's roleplaying.
Yes, that there is a sort of master-pupil relationship just as with Gehrman and Isshin in past games, but this time it is left more implied than through explicit dialogue interactions.
Well I am sure that there is probably going to be DLCs which might include time traveling and meeting the various characters before the Elden Ring was shattered.
I really wish this had been in the game somehow. I really did not care much when Godfrey showed up even though it was a cool fight. This would give that fight so much more significance.
@@karlfranz2211 Imagine. The tutorial area is outside the Land's between. You go through a gauntlet with other Tarnished, and you then fight Godfrey as a final test at the end of it. THEN you wake up with Melina finding you.
Godfrey speaks to the player as though he knows them during the boss fight. That makes more sense now that we know he had other dialogue from before the fight, perhaps as an NPC questgiver or a figure in the player character’s backstory.
The reason he speaks like that is because Godfrey views all of the Tarnished as his kin, perhaps even more so at that point than his own real family. He's spent years with them after they were banished, fighting alongside then in the Badlands and now they have all returned together. Godfreys fight is merely a final duel to decide who will inherit this new world, there is no hate or anything like that involved
I'd like to think he went and lived a whole other life as vendrick before being called back after the curse bearer kills him. Obviously not likely but I love the idea
@@jasonlobo2350 no he's not, he's an honorable and mighty warrior who respects those who pose a worthy challenge to him, he's not a tyranical asshole how preffered to destroy the entire world just cuz he didnt wanted to give up his crown eond after he died
@@countcrocodile1115 im not saying his attitude its the same im saying hes just the first to mend the elden ring just as gwyn with the first flame and vendrick with the giants
My theory is either they intended to have you be one of the tarnished that followed Godfrey as an opener to the game (which would have actually been pretty cool once you get late into the game and see Godfrey as an enemy again), or this is some sort of poem set as the general call to arms for Tarnished and Godfrey just happens to be saying it given his lore relevance, like as an opening cutscene or something. In either case, he way he talks isn't really "normal", so it doesn't seem like something from a natural conversation. Considering we already have time travel in the game, I'm curious if future DLC will actually send us back to the shattering, or even a bit before.
Finding the word usage and delivery interesting here as well. It doesn’t have quite the odd almost thespian-esque feel that Godrick’s cut stuff does, but I’d say it still has a certain theatrical air, like he’s speaking publicly or to many rather than to the player character individually.
If they kept this dialogue in game, it would have made the Godfrey bossfight so much more impactful. Like when we fought Gehrman at end game after he had been guiding us as the wise old man from the beginning. Same with Isshin
I’d say German wasn’t that impactful since you barely talk with him much and most of it amounts to “kill some beast hunter.” Like his lore is tragic but you don’t really get a chance to connect with him properly.
@@CrispyChaos38 To each their own. I, and judging from his popularity as a boss a ton of other players, fully got the impact of Gehrman's fight when I first fought him. Admittedly, Isshin took Gehrman's idea and really ran with it. I do kinda feel like it would have made the Godfrey fight even more memorable than it already is, but on the other hand, perhaps they wanted it to be more implied this time around.
I love Godfrey's fight His entire boss is just amazing A duel to end all duels Even so, I believe that maybe had we interacted with him before his fight would have been elevated, considering the greater will guides him to us, and us to him A fated fight, you could say, maybe talking to him would have elevated said sentiment, although I do really love what we got
I think it has something to do with the fact that you hear and see Hoarax Loux's name in the intro cutscene but basically never meet him until the literal endgame. I think we WERE supposed to meet him before entering the chapel of anticipation. I guess this also hints that all tarnished are his descendants or at least descendants of his followers, the same warriors who were exiled with him.
I really liked Godfrey's fight it really felt like it was two warriors battling out me being a strength build at least for the first half and then I was punted around for about a minute until I died lol. It didn't really feel like that in any of the other boss fights.
Yea, apart from the phase 2 cutscene "warrior" voice acting this fight is really fun. It really captures Godfrey as a strong and unrelenting melee presence. Kinda of reminded me of Father Owl in a way.
When I fought him with both my characters, he kept stomping every other move. It was really annoying. He swing his axe then stomp then stomp so stones come out of the ground then AoE stomp.
Bro really pulled out the Dark Souls 2 dialogue, giving you a vague title then telling you your goal, it reminds me of the Emerald Herald’s “seek souls” or literally any interaction with Aldia to seek adversity, actually gave me chills. 😆
"Bear seek seek lest." Remember that dialogue when you would skip it in Ds2? From the woman. Forgot what she was. God it was annoying since you always had to talk to her. A fire keeper. Think you used her to level. It has been so long.
Yeah, it's probably just test plays. But it won't hurt to dream about a past dlc helping Godfrey in whatever battle is he fighting at. And then when you face him in the present, he remembers you, like Sif in DS1
The scene of Sif remembering you and solemnly taking her sword out of the ground knowing she has to kill you is still one of the saddest scenes in Fromsoft’s library.
I had the same thought but a different direction. We know that a cut mechanic in the game involved collecting dreams and we see arenas all over the world Map. I think I’d be possible that we could have a dreams/memory dlc focused on various characters with them revealing some lore and ours includes a past event with Godfrey. That’s my hope anyway.
I theorize this dialogue likely occurs in your own dreams, or another Tarnished's dream, going off other cut content related to Miquella/St.Trina's dream content being cut. And showing our life before we were in the lands between, as Horax Lou/Godfrey marched us/Tarnisheds to out of the lands between, his axe is notable not broken as well, which I believe broke sometime either during the March, or out of the lands of between (where I believe tarnisheds wage war). He was the chieften of the badlands, and probably leader of all tarnished who went on the march, and Marika had told him before he had even left, that them and the tarnished were to return back to the lands between for the Elden ring, so it's not surprising he know that it will occur one day and tells his followers that(for hope, and possibly maintain his and the golden order's authority too amongst the tarnished).
I heard there is also cut dialogue where he says that he wants to hold Marika again from his fight. Makes it all the more tragic because he seemed to have genuinely loved her and she may have loved him as well considering that she never stopped calling him her lord.
its really strange to say this but these dialoges are really feels relaxing to me . unlike the boss battle which is full of fury and energy . this calm and friendly chat with godfrey makes me calm
Damn why tf did they cut much boss dialogue just like Malenia's, it's so much cooler interacting with a boss as an npc prior to their boss fight, gives them much more depth I hope this stuff somehow makes it's way back through dlc since their dialogue all sound like they're from some time in the past
« It’s so much cooler interacting with a boss as an npc prior to the fight » Gideon waiting for people to acknowledge the fact that he too is a main story boss:
@@beng4ll967 Oh yea and thats what made Gideons boss fight amazing aside from the fact he's really cheesable first time i encountered him i was sad af that i had to kill the main dude i worked with
Honestly a time travel DLC for Godfrey would be really cool, something like Artorias the Abysswalker. After all, Tarnished are supposed to be these warriors who fought alongside him, it'd give his boss fight so much more meaning, like Sif's back in DS1.
I really hope that, one day, someone compiles all the cut content together -- or at least the stuff they can -- and makes on massive mod for this game. They did it with Dark Souls, so there's hope at least.
He really should've showed up before the ingame fight if they were going to highlight him with all of the other notable tarnished in the Opening. I kinda wish he was like Owl in Sekiro
Frankly I'm surprised he only appears once seeing as he's basically king of the tarnished. I thought it would be better to encounter him first as Horah Loux, where he has some quest or dialogue, then you encounter his boss fight at the end for the surprise that your leader is also someone you have to slay to complete your mission
2 months later but i still believe Elden Ring is the DS2 that Yui Tanimura wanted and he finally achieved it with time. He perfected the art he was interested in and delivered as this banger, even though game got cut as much maybe less than DS2 it still deserves praise for its beauty and creativity if delivered with some aspects of bs here and there
There is SO much cut content pointing towards us going to the past, I can't imagine it'd all go unused? I want to meet the demigods in their prime, talk with Rennala before she goes mad, see the true Godwyn and Miquella, etc. So much potential...
Most cut dialogue is just a few extra voice lines, but this makes it sound like Godfrey was almost an entirely different character. I want to see how things would have played out if this was left in
So not only would we get a Vendrick throwback and get to fight alongside him, we would get an explanation on just what on earth the Elden Ring actually is.
The Warrior class is probably the most accurate of all the starting classes. Makes sense that Godfrey sent you here and later challenge Godfrey to claim the Elden Throne.
Holy frick does this open up doors to so many theories for what they were planning to do with these lines story wise.... And plenty of the ones here in the comments are already pretty damn intriguing to think about
i really don't like how people in the souls community see cut content like this and immediately assume that fromsoft just randomly decided to throw out perfectly good things. things change in the development of literally any kind of art, movies, TV shows, books, the only reason we see so much cut stuff from videogames is because you can see the remnants in the final product. you usually don't get to see the cut ideas from other kinds of art, but they're just as prominent as in videogames
In lore he was exiled from Lands Between along with other tarnished to wage war and prove once again that he is worthy of the title of Elden Lord. It would be really cool if the beginning of the game had you talk to Godfrey as your Lord Commander right after a successful campaign and sending you on an important mission to find Elden Ring. I think this way meeting him again at the foot of the Erdtree would make this fight much more impactful.
Issue is that it'd make the fight a lot stupider because we'd have two perfectly aware characters with history with one another and neither would be capable of saying "okay that's fine you can get the crown".
@@gaelyr8322 Well we have a similar situation with Gideon in the game already. From the very beginning he makes it clear that he wants to become elden lord as well so we are bound to fight for the crown at some point.
@@dud5606 Not really ? I mean first of all gideon evolves during the game, ending up opposing us for reasons that have nothing to do with him getting the crown. And secondly we only see godfrey once and it's when he beats our ass because we're an obstacle. He isn't a mentor in any way and isn't testing us in any provable way, and his motive in the current version of the game is pretty clearly to join marika, not let some rando kill her.
@@gaelyr8322 The wasn’t his original motive he very much wanted to be Elden Lord but the only reason he didn’t want to be Elden lord anymore is because he was terrified of the Elden Beast thats why he says a tarnished can’t become Elden lord bc he believes it impossible to kill the beast. Also to even join Marina you would have to become Elden lord so idk what you are talking about
@@Fraudkuna9 "the only reason he didn't want to be Elden Lord anymore is because he was terrified" Oh you're talking about gideon ? Damn for a moment I thought you were talking about Godfrey and I was like "whaaat, since when was je afraid of anything ?" XD "thats why he says a tarnished can't become Elden Lord" He does talk about a man not being able to slay a god but you forget that both marika and radagon are also gods, and he speaks of marika having the hope of seeing tarnished struggle for longer, so I don't see where your confidence comes from that he's talking about the elden beast. "to even join marika you would have to become Elden Lord" No, to join marika you just have to enter the tree, since that's where she is imprisoned. It's just that neither godfrey nor us knew how much marika had disappeared.
I think the tarnished was most likely supposed to meet Godfrey in a 'dream world' of one of the characters where he will fight along side him and speak to him after the supposed battle but when the dream mechanic was cut the dialogue was cut along with it. That probably explains why this happens outside of the lands between and before the shattering.
This cut context makes me think the dlc takes place outside of the lands between and in the past, Kinda like a prequel through dlc and the end that is where this content could come back into play.
Seems like this was supposed to be in the intro, I don’t think this would’ve been in the actual game. So cool though, Godfrey is such an awesome character!
Could you imagine if the game opened with Godfrey giving you this speach then giving you a near unwinneble boss battle, then he darea you to seek the Elden ring, & perhaps face him once more Now that would have lit a fire in anyones heart! ( i do like the mystery of the scion in the graveyard opening but this would have been glorius! )
Imagine if they added these dialogues for a future DLC where you go to the past before the Shattering, in a new cross-temporal adventure like Artorias of the Abyss.
These lines sound like they were recorded for some intro or prologue that ultimately was not used. I kind of wish that in the finished game Godfrey had said something about knowing us. After all, the Tarnished were supposed to be fighting with him during their exile.
It makes sense that he would know about the Shattering in advance... it kind of seemed like he was in on the plan too. If the goal was to make fighters that were capable enough to slay the Elden Beast, and to ensure the Greater Will could not have them by sending them away and cutting them off from it, then they would have been best able to do just that by being sent away with the understanding of why they were sent away. It also makes the fight against Godfrey and Hoarah Loux far easier to understand... because he was basically the best among them, so if you could take him down as both Elden Lord *and* a full fledged warrior barbarian chief who was giving it his all right up until the end... then he knew you were the best person for the job, and that your chances of finishing things would be greater than his. In short, you lived up to the goal of the plan perfectly, and you made him proud.
that first line of him saying brave tarnished sounds likes hes in physical pain, maybe its connected to him being impaled on that tree in the into cutscene
This makes me think of an extended introduction where all of the Tarnished are revived, and we and Godfrey awake in the world beyond the Lands Between. Godfrey tells the player to seek the Elden Ring, and then the 2 of them separate to head for the Lands Between.
I really hope we can venture through dreams or memories like in DS2. The best thing we got so far was fighting Fortissax in Fia's dream realm thing idk
Guess this is an alternate start to the one we got. Instead of Chapel of Anticipation you probably had a bit of a "learn to fight" "learn to ride" talk to Godfrey kinda deal then took a boat, and got shipwrecked leading to the cutscene with Melina, and Torrent finding you barely alive on the shore. Either way it was cut for a reason, and I don't think it was time, or budget for this particular one.
This would have been so cool and being one of the original tarnished that served with him would epic to with Godrick and others implying a time span of failures until you finally succeed. It is also fascinating with how it implies Marika knew what she was going to do and that adds a lot of layers to the feeling of betrayal and the rivalry and feud between her and Ranni
I don’t Know why but it makes me feel like they we’re planning on having Godfrey appear in the game were you can talk to him. Where he likely guides you or gives you an inspirational speech or something.😺
THAT WHICH COMMANDED THE STARS... GIVING LIFE ITS FULLEST BRILLIANCE. So do we have anyone that says "I doubt you could even imagine it" and "IT BURNS"?
i like the implication that Godfrey was in on his wife's plan so they had a fake divorce and got some schmuck to fuse into Marika thinking he won her heart
