This is the little engine that could, for indie developers. I have a working understanding of Unity and tried to get the hang of it for months. Yet after just a few weeks of learning Godot (on and off, next to a full time job and family time), I could make a very simple app in 2 evenings to help prepare our 3 year old autistic daughter for her first eye exam. Godot is very simple to learn, and what you can make scales up really easily. Once you've worked through the Getting Started tutorial, I highly recommend following the Procedural Planet series which explains to you how to view procedurally generated content outside of play mode, which is so very powerful and will really leverage your level design. I then went back to a few old Unity exercises and found that, after some restructuring, I could achieve the same result with far less code and better adaptability.

It took blender years to finally reign supreme and become industry standard. It was the passion of the community that pushed it to where blender is now. I already see Godot going that far. I fell in love with the engine because of the work flow. It’s so intuitive and probably has the best implementation of the observer pattern I have ever seen. I mean, have you seen unreals? 😅 my point is, I have never been interested in making tools. I have always been a gameplay programmer, but with Godot it makes me want to start, or contribute to tools like: a terrain editor and behavior trees.

One thing I really like about Godot in the AssetLib section is I can add something and just get that thing like a first person camera. It just seems a lot more lightweight and less cumbersome than other engines. I'm not sure if monetizing it will make it more like the Unity asset store in which I have had a lot of issues with packages. I really like that some things are just some gdscript code I can attach and go.

Yes, the biggest problem for newcomers to Godot 4 is the documentation. At the initial stages of the beta version, some functions remained unchanged and even then it was possible to start compiling full-fledged documentation for the 4th version, as well as start translating into other languages. I contacted the developers on this issue several times on various resources (for example, discord), but they answered me that the translation of the documentation would be open only after the release of the stable version. And when version 4 comes out, too much time will be lost. So I'm asking the developers to open a translation of the version 4 documentation, and sections that don't exist or need to be changed can be translated later. It is also now possible to make training videos for version 4, but, unfortunately, there are very few of them or they are completely absent. And thanks a lot for the video! It was very interesting!

The architecture of Godot is absolutely brilliant, you can easily compare it the the Quake engine when it comes to optimization. Unlike UE which can barely run on the average machine. Games made in Godot will not only look beautiful, but they'll run on most machines

@klaatubarada6200
@klaatubarada6200 Год назад
Some devs like to compare which engine is best, but I think it all resumes to what suits your project better. In my case, I have a 8gb ram laptop and I was able to make a 2D game in 3 days for a gamejam, using Godot. I tried using Unity, but it felt like using an assault rifle to kill an ant, in comparrison. So if you want to make a simple 2D game, try Godot. However if your project is something more complex with 3D, try Unity or Unreal, for now.
@stayathomedev
@stayathomedev Год назад
I haven't gotten into Unity as much as I'd like but I do feel the metaphor. I think a lot of the AAA capacities that come with Unreal/Unity are never going to be used for indie games. You can for sure, but majority are never going to utilize Lumen or Nanite with much purpose. Godot feels like a great engine for getting into coding, making games (especially 2D at this point).
@Klayperson
@Klayperson Год назад
I find Godot and Unreal together put Unity in a weird spot where either of the other two will be preferable to it. Choosing Unity because Unreal is too complex or resource-hungry? Godot wins over Unity for the same reason; Choosing Unity over Godot because it has more features? Unreal wins over Unity for that reason also. Aside from a dev's pre-existing experience and proficiency with Unity, in my opinion it is hard to defend it against one or the other of its two competitors, depending on the project.
@ThiVasss
@ThiVasss Год назад
I am currently learning Godot with the goal of starting to do regular Game jams. But there are a few advantages to Unity that makes me be with one foot on the engine. Specifically, Unity is much bigger, which means it's very viable to find jobs and transition from a solo dev to a programmer. And the second part is C# sounds better long term. It's general purpose so again skills transfer better and there are so many tools to learn and master C#, like codeawars. I know Godot has C# as well but I am not sure how well supported it is compared to GDScript (also learning Godot with Csharp sounds like a nightmare for finding tutorials) and I do like GDScript as my first language as it's simple. Also uploading an HTML game for gamejams sounds like a big advantage and Unity doesn't support Chromium browsers either.
@noven329
@noven329 Год назад
Honestly, I work as an Unity developer while being a huge fan of Godot and having it as my hobby, and you are right about the jobs part. I actually accidentally got my first 2 jobs from having Unity's experience.
@noven329
@noven329 Год назад
Thing is, maybe out of experience but probably biased opinion, I never liked Unity much. There's one thing that it has not that makes Godot and particularly GdScript much more rewarding and usable, and that is Live Coding. It's a pain in the ass how long you have to wait after each alteration in the code. You'd have the same problem with Godot C#, since it needs to rebuild/recompile everytime, but they are currently working on Live Coding as far as I'm concerned. I haven't test Godot 4.0 but I feel like this feature might come soon.
@noven329
@noven329 Год назад
In any case, I'm not gonna tell you to follow what you "like" the most. Instead, learn Unreal Engine or Unity and make your own projects if you really want a job in the field. Game Maker or Godot might give you necessary knowledge to get a job in the field if you are starting regardless, while being the best engines for usability and efficiency in my opinion.

I started out with Godot for my game dev journey. Godot was there for me when Unity and Unreal weren't I switched over to Unity after I started learning it and I kinda stopped Using Godot not for good ofcorse buut I was able to do bigger much more bigger projects in Unity with no lag I saw you can do in Godot aswell but I needed optimization and I just couldn't get it to work. Sooo for the time being I will keep learning Unity (plus it can really help me for the future in case of jobs) but that is not to say I will stop using Godot I will use it again when Godot4 full not Alphas or Betas just Godot4 full will come out I will return to see whats new here and there. I'm just hoping it let's me make vr games easier than in unreal. Unreal is super heavy and very limited in terms what you have access to in their forward ldr pipeline. Absolutely no post process stack? That eliminates so many possibilities for design. The things you may think you can work around will be met with surprise barriers time and time again. why not switch to unity? Unity doesn't feel right. It's closed source, so no engine bug fixes either. Maybe I haven't spent enough time with it to try and make something good. I'm just hoping I get the freedom godot offers with the XR, multiplayer, and open world feature completeness unreal brought to the table. Most vr set ups need something custom that doesn't fit into unreal or unity's structure at some point. Really excited to see what Godot will do for the XR community, especially since the editor will run in vr mode directly on the quest. That will be highly enticing for XR communities and modding later down the road.

You have to be careful with open source concepts. Godot is not only open source, it's also free. Like you said in your video, you can do anything you want with the source code. You're "free" (as free beer but also as free speech). So that makes Godot FOSS (Free Open Source Software). However, there are many engine that offer "open" source but with licencing limitations. Unreal for example, I think Unity too if you pay some fee, and Flax. Those tools allow you to access their source code, so the source is "open", but they aren't FOSS like Godot.

Being open source isn't purley a good thing. The main annoyance is porting your game. If your wanting to build a game that targets console on launch your in for a bad time. However if you make a game for PC with consoles in mind and the game is successful then you can pay a porting company to do the work for you. Aside from that though I love Godot, It's a great tool. If your intrested in learning 3D and 2D I would start with Godot and then you can switch to Unity or Unreal later if you need to.

Linux is better than any other OS for desktop, at least for most use cases. But it will never be as popular. That is a key distinction to make. You should care about the former, not the latter. I hope it's the same with game engines, but I don't know since I am just starting to learn that.

For Godot to boom this year it's all about C# support. GDScript is ok for smaller games and great at getting something working quickly. But if they want to attract Unity / Unreal devs across to build commercial games these people are simply not going to find GDScript acceptable. As a C# developer, GDScript performance is still relatively lacking, it is also far quicker and more productive for me to use the .NET Framework instead of Godot built in functionality, where possible. I believe you can still write C# in the Godot editor but it still offers no tooltips or even code completion etc, it is a very poor experience. However Visual Studio (and Code) integration is hugely improved in Godot 4, which is good as it was pretty rubbish in 3.5. So using one of these is my strongly recommended for C# in Godot.
@stayathomedev
@stayathomedev Год назад
IDE integration is definitely a big deal. It does have some options for coding outside the editor. Another issue is console support, but that's less technical and more business/open-source related.

Documentation has always been lack luster. It gives you a hint but you are left still not 100% certain. Godot has more bugs than a WEF bug farm. Those who work on Godot make excuses for its lack of features and issues. If Blender had such "don't give a damn" attitude for devs, it wouldn't be where it is today. A lot of the stuff I see in Godot is old, like in 1990's old, concepts. WTF are we still using OpenGL? Why does the audio still use the old windows driver? Some of the devs do care and work on it diligently, fixing bugs and the like. But I feel Godot has no one directing it. Just leaving it up to who the @#!? ever to pick a project and work on it; not caring if it works or not. It's frustrating to work with when there are barely any tutorials on how to do specific things, or solve specific issues. You'd be amazed at how little comes up, that is close to relevant, with a google search on your search topic. I think Godot is easier to learn and get things started, than compared to Unity. Even GDscript is easy to understand as it's similar to Python. This is still a good tool, I think, if you want to learn game development; however, if you're a serious experienced developer, stick with what is known to work through the decades.
