My opinion for solo devs on that: Make a game successful on PC first and if it's a hit, you will have more than enough resources to outsource to a studio specialized at porting or get a publisher to handle stuff like that. Technical stuff aside, which is difficult enough, porting involves a shit ton of more compliance rules and requirements.

You can self publish on multiple consoles, you have to get access and eventually port the engine yourself if it's not available. For the Nintendo switch, there's a free Godot port maintained by Rawrlabs that I'm using. Of course you first have to get accepted as a Nintendo developer.

The first console compatible need Godot is the Dreamcast. Sega sure help to do it. And this can be the hard punch to call the people. Love think this.

1:08 That's just a pretext. They easily can make additional code that they distribute under another license, but they don't.

Some projects such as LibSDL, Haxe, Monogame, Cocos or Defold developed console ports behind closed doors and offer them to licensed developers for free, so the question arises often about whether Godot can do this too. The answer is that, Godot is not in the same situation, because: Godot is orders of magnitude more complex than any of those projects. huh🙃🙃🙃

yea this is obviously a money grab. there is no excuse to not offer free porting to console even if the engine is open source

juan is the primary developer of godot and also a co owner of w4games. a little conflict of interests there. he is definitely trying to earn money from this

@@eericjacobson earning money is ok but giving this kind of excuse is making me worry about godots future too like he still dictates where the resource will be allocated and which feature will be implemented which is priority

If you target the PC and Mobile market you target the two biggest markets in the gaming market, which should be almost 140B at that point, consoles are the minority and its not really worth the hassle for 99% of games/projects.

could've mentioned one of the other third-parties that offer console porting services for Godot right now. also could've mentioned that there is of course always the option for the game devs themselves to register with a console manufacturer and to do the porting without third-parties.

Consoles just suck in my opinion in general they are shitty computers that cannot be upgraded and they are regulated by stupid laws, pirate software shared his opinion on this and I heard that they will claim ridiculous reasons to deny your import to their console market and they regulate pretty much every thing you want to do, its just so bad and annoying to bother with, its not Godot's fault its just that consoles should've stopped being a thing in 2015.

Yes, regulations are a thing... But the market behind is still worth considering I think

The consoles are going out of their way to keep you from developing on them, so why bother? They don't want your business. I kinda get it. The game industry collapse in the 1980s and the current disaster of the mobile gaming, shows some curation on publishing is necessary. But having some approval process is vastly different than making it hard to develop for at all.

Consoles literally just exist to contaminate everything else in the gaming market, their mere existence and regulations make sure that most games are infected with some kind of virus like bad controls, bad menus, bad graphics, bad performance etc etc etc. It happened to elden ring, it happened to helldivers 2, it happened to monster hunter world like how many games do we have to have so many bad programming in just so it can support some stupid console market.
