Great review. With respect to the magnetic accessory kit, the Godox kit on the V1 is super quick and easy to use, but the MagMod system on the 860 has many more options, although more expensive. I use them both, depending on what I am trying to do.

@WesPerry
@WesPerry 5 лет назад
@@epradeep Yep, my main cam is an a9 with the Sony/Zeiss 35 1.4. The AF on that lens is amazing, for photo And video. It's not super sharp around the edges, but obviously that's not a concern, especially shooting at 1080p. For the light, I'm just using a cheap Neewer ring light, diffused through a $1 white umbrella 😏 My main business is photography, so I spend very little on my youtube channel (not many subscribers yet, so not much $$ in it), and just use what I already have from photography for the most part.

Thanks for yet another good and balanced review! I have two suggestion/wishes for future videos: 1) You seem to know Godox flashes well so a "buyers guide" kind off video over which one to get for what purpose would be nice, including the more powerful battery operated "studio" variants that are good for outdoor shots. 2) You mentioned that you did two weddings in one weekend. Your images are always nicely balanced in exposure and colors and yet they are produced in circumstances where time is a limiting factor. A series of videos showing your full workflow from shooting to unloading of images into editing, and how you edit and deliver to clients to backup and archiving would most likely help a lot of people optimizing their own flows. Thanks and best regards from Sweden! /Anders

I once did three full day weddings in one weekend...I wouldn’t recommend it. Haha But thanks for the suggestions. That second one sounds interesting. I feel like Rob Hall has already covered number 1 a few times in sufficient detail that anything I did wouldn’t add too much to it. Unless you think I’d come off in a different direction ;)

Wes, thanks for this review, I enjoyed it. I’m not a photographer (it’s just a hobby for me) So, I don’t comment much. That said I’ve been all over the world running process improvement projects (management operating systems consulting) I know an effective presentation/video when I see one... good job! I’ve some Godox kit: X1T-S, V860ii(S), TT350(S) and their 120cm Octobox. In my experience, there are a couple of good features that are missing in the new lineup. 1. The X1T-S has a cold shoe on top, which I use to mount a Vello Wireless ShutterBoss III for Sony 2. The V860ii(S) and TT350(S) have the pull-out panel, bounce card, work with S-Type/Bowens mount and accept many standard flash add-ons Keep on sharing, your videos are some of my favs!
@WesPerry
@WesPerry 5 лет назад
Hi Paul, The new lineup also includes the X2T trigger, which still has the hotshoe on top for people to love that. (Although I feel like the easy controller interface of the V1 makes that setup a little unnecessary in most instances). And I can’t say that I ever had much love for the look created by bounce cards, so I didn’t really care about its absence. And as far as accessories go, of course Godox now wants you to buy all Their proprietary magnetic ones now ;)

@@WesPerry, I sure appreciate that you took the time to reply, and so thoughtfully, to my comment. Thank you. It means a lot to me... I’m beginning to understand how hard photography/video is and how much there is to learn. At Queen’s University, I spent a fair bit of time with Rob Quartly, but I didn’t really understand what he studying (our girlfriends lived together there) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rob_Quartly As a hobbyist, I’ve watched most of your RU-vid videos; generally they’re among the ones, that I've enjoyed and trust most. I tend to agree with your answer, the pull-out panel and bounce card don’t seem to do much. For fun, I’ve been playing around with the Neewer Pro (or otherwise re-branded models of the) SGA-K9 speedlite flash accessories kit that can be found on Amazon relatively inexpensively, it provides a few interesting flash attachments. I like the globe... although it kind of looks like an older bathroom/kitchen light :) ...I’m looking forward to seeing more of your videos

The regular Rapidbox. I don’t like to break out the big ones during receptions. Too distracting. It has a coldshoe behind it to mount on camera flashes, and although the front of the V1 doesn’t fit inside the back hole, or snugs up against it just right, so still works great.

I use two camera bodies. with two V860II as master units with different power settings, OR use 'SHOOT multiple' mode when I use the Xpro Triggers. However, after V1 was released I am trying to use two V1s as master unit, and I have to hit test button every time I switch between camera bodies. It looks like V1 has 'Shoot - one shoot' as default setting in it. Is there a way out to change that to 'Shoot - multiple shoot' on it. Further, it also changes White balance to slightly bluer if used on ETTL (specially if used with high ceiling in tungsten environment) Any help on this is highly appreciated.
@WesPerry
@WesPerry 4 года назад
That’s interesting about the shifting white balance. I would guess that it comes from the rapid succession of shots heating up the element more, which would shift the color from warm to cool. (That’s just wild speculation, though) And as of now, I’m not aware of the V1 being able to do shoot multiple. I had heard some people chattering about them hoping for a firmware update to give this function.

@WesPerry
@WesPerry 4 года назад
Perri Cassie That depends a lot on what size of a softbox you’re planning on using, and what aperture you’ll likely be shooting at. For a large softbox, or narrow apertures (like f/5.6 and higher as fashion photographers often use), this might not be enough power.

@WesPerry

I can’t speak much to that, as I never use TTL. But generally speaking, third party flashes usually don’t do as well as first party flashes for TTL. If you really want to save a buck as a beginner you could even just go with the TT685. About the same light output, just slower recycle times.

Great compare and contrast video on these Godox units! Do you think that Godox would withhold or just avoid offering a firmware upgrade to make it easier to navigate the menu on the V860 or TT685, so as not to compete with the V1? Along with that cool tilt-back, round head, being easier to change settings on the fly is a big selling point for a wedding photographer.
@WesPerry
@WesPerry 4 года назад
You bet they’re going to withhold it ;) It’s been out for long enough now that their intentions seem pretty clear at this point. I’m not a big fan of the light sphere look, personally. That being said, the sphere gives you a Much larger diffuser than the magnetic dome attachment. So your direct light source will be much softer. The dome is essentially just a point of light where direct lighting is concerned.

Hi Wes! Here in Argentina we hace a Chinese flash manufacturer call Visico. They sell the Visico 4 studio flash with 300w that use batteries and is the same price as the V1, I want to use either of these flashes with my A7R2 to shoot portraits on location. What would you buy? Love your videos!

i just bought the V1 on sale at BH photo. I have the TT685 and TT350 flashes, but I mostly use LED panels. Menus are so inconsistent between the TT350 and TT685 that makes sometimes confusing to change settings on the fly. I may sell a couple of TT350 and TT685 if I like the V1. Is the charger for the V1 and V860 batteries the same? i just hope that the bare bulb light quality of the V1 is a little softer.

@WesPerry

Most flashes, Godox included, use infrared for this focus assist beam. But the problem is mirrorless sensors can’t see infrared, while DSLR focus modules can. That’s why the X1T works in some situations: it has a visible focus assist lamp. But the Sony hotshoe only sends the focus signal when in AF-S mode, which isn’t a commonly used mode in events.

1) shooting continuous, what’s your FPS and flash output level? It won’t fire say 5fps at any high output level. There’s no way to tune this other than to change your power output. 3) There’s a button/function for the modeling light.
