@chopperpilot5. This movie is based on actual events that occurred during the American Civil War before Gettysburg. People that dont like this movie are people who dont understand history or dont like it. I give this 5/5 stars
1:13 gives me chills just seeing those huge blue lines of troops marching forward in the face of near impossible odds across that killing ground again and again.
@@PierresWildAdventure I dont quite remember but, i think the Irish brigade at the wall honoured the Federals courage and shouted something like Aruh! it was Celtic im sure of that.
@@Zarastro54 It did happen! Famously, at Fredericksburg, a Confederate Irish unit cheered the bravery of a Union Irish unit after they weathered the storm, as in the film!
Jaime Cross I absolutely agree, Steven Lang killed it as Jackson. He acts and sounds exactly like how I Picture him as. Duvall as lee not so much, he’s a good actor but not as good as sheen was.
Now in the memory of that great Virginian George Washington, who was first in the hearts of his countrymen, in calling also upon the memory of his own gallant father, Gen Lighthorse Harry Lee, this convention now calls upon Robert Edward Lee to take command of the armed forces of the citizens army of Virginia.
@Kyle Clark But didn't the south seceded in the first place to save the institution of slavery since the South was afraid that Lincoln will take their slaves away? Didn't the constitution say it was legal before? The supreme court said that it was a "indestructible union"
My team leader is a Maine man. He comes from Bangor. I said to him today double quick. And did two steps and he went (chuckle) no dude I said no no. But I will say here now. Maine has my respect and also two if I was a 20th boy there I'd charge that damned wall. "At the double quick men!"
That might be an slight overstatement, but no question about it, this movie is wonderful - I would go as far as to say that this is the best movie about the Civil War, even better than Gettysburg.
@SixFootBabyStudios I would not say its entirely historical fiction. The movie is based off a book that even though I have not read, is apparently well immersed in the legitimate civil war facts and details. The movie portrays the major parts of the war and I will say the book well, because it was criticized on the inaccuracy of characters not battle sequences or events in camp life. But yes there are some things that I noticed as well.
I liked the movie and can't wait for the extended version coming out in May, and I know that this is technically historical fiction but probably one of my biggest problems with the movie is all the signals using swords given by officers. That's a reenactor thing, in the Civil War, the swords were purely decorative

Though I would side with the Confederates, I think that the 20th Maine had some of the bravest men this world has ever known. Thought they didn't succeed, they proved that they were Patriots that were dedicated to their cause!
@emily6895 Yet the Founding Fathers felt very uncomfortable when the commoners began demanding to be called "Mr"/"Mrs". But I guess it is what the modern Americans think today that matters.
I'll agree with Joe Potato try left or right wheeling in battle line or going from column 2's 4's etc into line and back without visible direction. Oft'times i've looked at the sword rather than the officer. You can't hear all that well the the shit hits the fan anyway so shouting orders doesnt help long as you face front you can lead and take direction easy as.Great film, check out The birth of a nation by D.W Griffith.
Have i missed something? Was´nt the war of 1812 a strictly territorial war, all they fought for was land? It was, after all, the Americans that started the war. (And illlegal capturing of American merchant vessels, done by the British prior to the war, can hardly count as a threat to American independence)
@emily6895 I truly admire and respect that spirit, but if we reason like that, then the present conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan would count as a threat to your independence - and that is hardly the case.
We Americans are the greatest warriors of all times and hell we saves world from tyrants like hittler and Osama and america is greatest country in the world
It's the way the people think now. The Southerners saw the thing completely differently: They were sad about Northerners tyrannizing their fatherland. For them it was a holy war for freedom. A second war of independance.
Gettysburg was ok, but Robert Duvall's performance as Robert E. Lee in Gods in Generals was one of the best acting performances of all time in my opinion. Not only that, his performance was outshined by Stephen Lang as Thomas Jackson. I think that Gods and Generals also gave a more accurate representation of how the war really was on both sides.
Terrible movie Legendary score. I really wish they did an honest account of Stonewall Jackson. Lang's performance showed hints of it. The religious manic who admitted he enjoyed war a little too much and killing became a passion. He was one of the best officers the nation ever produced, and one who fought hard for one of her worst traditions. I want the Civil War told the same way DOWNFALL was.
