The godskins are described as having incorporated "inhuman features" into themselves. They have serpentine eyes, the apostles have serpent-like midsections, and the nobles have serpent tails. In elden ring serpents are the symbol of blasphemy against the greater will so it makes sense that the dudes who want to kill the gods would have them as part of their design.
still one of the scariest designs Ive seen. I remember reaching the apostle in the windmill village and thinking "God's kin apostle?" it got closer and I could see the faces all across its body, and I shouted "god skin!?"
Elden Ring is full of puns like this! Limgrave, for example, has its roots in the word "liminal" -- meaning "threshold" -- but it's also the domain of Godrick the Grafted, so it can be read as "Limb-Grave" just as easily.
Reminds me of how I was shocked to see Godskin Apostle set on my character I've played quite a lot of Leatherface in both Mortal Kombat X and Dead By Daylight. But seeing a literal face on my character's cape was enough to make my stomach turn
The fact they keep facial features like eyes and noses intact is an eerie level of detail. It hints the... harvesting... process is time consuming and intricate in gruesome ways. Its beyond taking strips to fashion leather, this is like a taxidermy suit.
I thought about that as well. This kind of perfect preservation, flawless warping, and seamless connection must take exceptional skill. I always assumed that they managed to do this with a very precise form of grafting; people complain that grafting was never brought up again after Godrick, but I think you can find examples of it everywhere, such as the Revenant and Godskin enemies.
@@bumblegoot1139 The Revenants and their followers arent grafted. Revenants have multiple limbs, but they actually connect seemlessly to the body and have a function. Godrick grafted so many limbs to his Body that he has to awkwardly swing around them to try to hit the player. No, Revenants are something else. They have a giant open wound, which is probably the reason why healing spells hurt them. Godrick or his Scions dont have anything like that.
Honestly, Godskin Duo isn't that hard, it's just really messy and poorly made. That slapped 2 completely different bosses (mechanics wise) together, who work with equal speed. It's a bad fight.
@@grizzly505gaming9 i honestly didn't mind fighting them multiple times, but scaling them to farum azula damage and fighting them at the same time is just bad
I remember stumbling upon a godskin apostle after exploring a random village of dancing women and it startled the crap out of me, lol. Their entire aesthetic is so interesting to me.
The way he walks slowly towards after seemingly coming out of nowhere. On top of a village where the inhabitants are dancing and shit. Almost like they are in a trance. It's creepy. I wonder why the apostle was there, what was he doing? And why did the villagers act like that?
@@S475-pb2dpThe Apostle probably was the one leading the "festival" in which all the women seemingly skinned everyone else, probably at the behest of the apostle.
I don't know why but seeing him stretch from another perspective is so hilarious, he just looks like a spaghetti in the wind or those guys at the car dealerships
It’s incredible how they gave such an ugly and disturbing boss this beautiful OST. I just wish they would’ve done more with them instead making them a copy paste enemy. We could’ve at least had a really strong third godskin guy in farum azula instead of the old two. Basically the leader of the church or something in that direction.
Idk if the OST is really beautiful yes it sounds like it is but the actual lyrics of it are disturbing i don't have them on hand rn but basically the choire sings about taking the skin of others and torture and death and how the're gonna burn the gods and that they envy those who have grace so they wanne steal it by skining people and wearing them you can actually find out the whole thing just look up Godskin OST lyrics on YT but i gotta say how disturbing the OST is its still my favorite so far
@@_Chaosnight_ the song doesn't actually have lyrics. The guy who made the video with "lyrics" is just making them up- the vocals in the video are gibberish Latin sounding words made up by a computer.
@@_Chaosnight_ a guy who was involved with translating the only song in Elden Ring with real Latin lyrics made quite a few reddit posts about it, detailing conversations with FromSoft in which they pretty much confirm that there aren't any other lyrics. Plus loads of videos online breaking down songs with "lyrics" in and showing that they're nonsensical.
Wish the Godskin Duo fight was better quality, but the Godskin Aspotle and Noble as character designs are extremely cool, and the music is phenomenal in their fights. I hope the Godskin's get further implementation/background in the DLC or DLC's that they have planned for Elden RIng.
The game literally gives u the option to summon Berhal Warmaster Who heals and had more HP than them individually And u can also summon your stuff The fight is not made to be fought alone If u summon Berhal he will not die even if u let hin fight alone
You find the big dude strangely near Ranni's real body in Liurnia's tower... And that skin is no more there. I think it's safe to say someone came around.
I like that the noble’s “robes” have hems, while the apostle wears much more ragged “robes” with frayed (flayed?) edges. Just love the design dichotomy between these two. It’s clear that their visual design was meant for a duo fight. If only their gameplay design was…
I guess Fromsoft liked their soundtrack so much, hence why we see so many of them in the game. It is a good soundtrack now: reflects their nobility but also their twisted and depraved nature: they have serpent-like features and wear the skins of their victims as clothing. Also, just noticed the back of the Noble's apron is covered in hair. I could have done without seeing that particular detail. :p
They have no style, They have no graces, This duo's robes have a lot of faces One can belly slam when he needs to The other stretches out just for you They spin and slice or roll around like a tire This crazy duo digs soulflame fire
After seeing Messemer the Impaler in the *_Shadow of the Erdtree_* trailer, I'm pretty convinced that he's related to the Godskin Duo with his overly lanky features, sparse armor, and the snakes entwined with him, not to mention seemingly wielding a flame of Destined Death. I wouldn't be surprised if his mother was the Gloam-Eyed Queen herself, and the features of the Godskin Duo are just hinting at a fraction of what we're about to find on June 21st.
Hey man, I know it’s been 3 months but just wanted you to know I’ve been thinking the same thing. I truly believe this to be the case. Let’s come back here if it turns out to be true
Me: "Okay Godskin Apostle, he's a guy wearing skin. I guess they're just people who served Destined Death." Godskin Noble: *has tail* Me: "Uhhhh... okay... not sure what that's about."
Fun fact: If you wear the Noble‘s hood and stand close to a wall you can see the eyeballs of the hood clipping inside your head. *Excited Master Willem noises*
Gotta love Miyazaki's twisted translation of English words. Insight: Eyes on the Inside. The Two Fingers = Literally 2 fingers. Godskin = Skin of gods.
You know them having serpentine features would explain some of their abilities. The apostle can stretch his body similar to how the serpent warriors and real life snakes stretch themselves with their various over-laying scales acting as a coil. The noble can inflate the skin (or dead skin) on his body similar to some specific real life snakes but in a supercharged fashion like when he rolls or jumps up into the air for a slam by inflating himself. Not to mention he has a snake tail. Very cool design. I never thought about them this way before but I’m glad I found out, adds more lore to godskins
I think they are somehow linked to Rykard or the Volcano Serpent. They have serpentine features, one of them is in Volcano Manor and the Duo is in Farum Azula where Bernahl also invades you. Did the Dusk Eyed Queen have some short of alliance with Volcano Manor?
@@matiasluukkanen7718 Yes of course, but mechanically/conceptually they don't stand out to me quite as strongly as Storm King, Maiden Astraea, Micolash, Sif, Artorias, Lady Maria, etc. And then the repetition really does start to drag down the quality. The catacombs bosses for instance I feel like don't compare well to the unique chalice dungeon bosses in BB.
I would've loved a Godskin ending where the Erdtree is burned in black flame and the Greater Will is killed for good, and ending where the black flame of the Erdtree would defend and keep all outer gods out of the Lands Between.
I wonder if miyazaki was inspired by the Aztec practice of wearing flayed skins for this. They would wear a whole piece of skin like a one piece onesy that also covered their face with the hands of the skin dangling down like grotesque winter mittens. Google Xipe Totec who is a god that represents this. In this context they would wear the skin of flayed sacrifices who represented sacred figures or were considered sacred so their skin was symbolically god skin and so was their flesh which could be ritually eaten by a select few.
When I read the name Godskin on the Apostles' boss bar, I thought that it was a "kin" of a god... but nope... They wear skins of gods... A revolting but intriguing idea
It’s kind of insane to think how long and wide the Golden Lineage was; each of the godskins wear robes of actual demigod skin of the Golden Linage collected during the god hunt, I mean, each of the robes worn by the nobles are made of the skin of 7 gods PER SET, hence why there is 7 faces in the noble’s chest piece.
I once postulated that the Gloam-Eyed queen and her apostles didn't actively hunt the gods in some plot, not at first. The killing of gods was normal and ritualistic - consider the walking mausoleums. Their souls/power hewn back into the tree. The fact that they have golden eyes proves they were and are still to some degree, functioning under the rule of Order. I personally think they were a pinnacle of Albinauric development and for a time became a caste of albinaurics above even most humans, before their race was demonized, enslaved, hunted. I also like thinking that Gideon ran around looking for scraps of godskin left behind, hence why he's outfitted with discarded ears lol
The thing about their clothes is that even thoe it's horrifying is was made with such care and love and with edges covered with jewelry really makes you appreciate the craft in a way 😅
Godskin Apostle is my favorite enemy/boss in Elden Ring. The design and moveset I just love. Nothing will beat that first experience meeting and fighting the Apostle at the Windmill Village, backed by AMAZING music.
This is what we see at the beginning of the DLC trailer, it has clear stitching and a trim on the edge, and since hair is pulled out of it, it's probably a hood, with a head underneath, the Gloam Eyed Queen?
There is something about these guys that has always frustrated me. We see demigods through the game and only a few gods. And they have city destroying levels of power. But these dudes have skinned most likely dozens of gods. HOW, WHEN! Each god in the game is basically a household name and you are telling me that DOZENS of gods got skinned alive and nobody mentions it! That’s a bigger event than most “gigantic historical events” in the games lore! WTF I’m going insane!!!
they didn't skin gods themselves. They've skinned ordinary people in mockery of gods. We can see that in that windmill village where you fight the godskin apostle - the dancing women skinned people for him to make clothes . there's a ghost near the entrance begging to not be skinned.
@@puppyboykilla oh ok, makes sense. So they like, really want to skin gods but have to settle for regular dudes. I wonder if they’ll factor into dlc? It seemed like they where kinda dying off by the time the main game took place so maybe not.
@@Sluggadome_Rotunda_Bernardson yeah, they were much more powerful, but Maliketh killed their gloam-eyed queen and stole Destined Death, making blackflame, thing they used to kill gods, much more weaker. Kinda wish we would have some kind of blackflame ending in the DLC.
The way the skin suits are fair-skinned and have yellow eyes similar to the godskins makes it look like they skinned their brethren to obtain these suits. I'm not muchof a lore buff so I don't really know where the skins actually come from, but it makes it eerier.
I only learned today that the back part of the Noble's clothes is someone's front torso skin; chest hairs, belly button, and all that. Never have I feared a character who goes THAT far to skin a poor bastard.
So the path of snake is one to eat or kill gods but the path Rykard and godskin apostles are slightly different then? There's clearly both a link and divergence i think.
The Godskin apostle's robe looks a little like Godwyn from the front, which may be overanalysis, but I always thought Godwyn's mutated appearance was a manifestation of some outer god associated with destined death (Sort of like how the fire giant's chest face is implied to be a manifestation of the Fell God.) It wouldn't surprise me if the ruffled flaps of skin on the apostle's robe are meant to evoke that god's appearance.
